Is This The Best Beginner Adventure Bike? KTM 390 Adventure Test Ride and Off Road Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With the 390 Adventure, KTM has obviously set out to create the best beginner adventure bike possible, but does it earn the title? In my extended test ride and initial KTM 390 Adventure review, I had a chance to spend a bit of time with the bike on the street as well as an opportunity to take the KTM 390 Adventure off road for some gravel exploration and testing.
The 390 is definitely a beginner friendly motorcycle. It's easy to maneuver, light weight, low to the ground and the power delivery is very unintimidating. Any brand new rider would have an easy time learning to ride on the road with this bike.
On the road, the 390 handles very well. It corners exceptionally and has enough power to keep up on the highway and the freeway, but is also very flickable and easy to maneuver on city streets.
When you take the KTM 390 Adventure off road, however, you start to notice a few flaws. The biggest of which is that it's not terribly comfortable to stand up on. The 390 Adventure is clearly designed to be an excellent street bike that you can occasionally take off road, and after spending a little time throwing it around on gravel, you start to see some of the limitations of the design.
My overall KTM 390 Adventure review is this: it's a great adventure bike for beginners (as long as you're not planning to do a ton of difficult off road riding on it), but more experienced riders are going to find it a little mellow and...dare I say...boring after a while.
Big thanks to the crew at Power Motorsports for the opportunity to take the 390 Adventure on this extended test ride. Check out their website at www.powermotorsports.com

S Defiel mentions below that the bike has not cycled through the break in period yet and is limited to 6500 rpm. After 650 miles there is a service requirement and the bike is reprogramed and can then be taken to red line. I think you will find the bike to be much more spirited once this is done.

I rode half the Continental Divide on my 390. I found the power exciting AFTER the break in period in the 6-8k rev range. Power delivery was forgiving, and it climbed through the gnar very well. Had to be smarter about my lines with the low clearance, but I'd own it again before a DR650 or KLR650, which were my first two dualsports. It out ran both. 1-3/4 Rox risers, Blackdog level pegs, and fork extenders gave it another inch of clearance, and a very comfortable standing position. Ended up selling it and upgrading to the Tuareg, and immediately missed the 390's agility and lightweight. Anything over 50 HP is wheelspin in the dirt in my opinion. Most people who buy these high HP bikes never truly harness that power anyway. The more I ride offroad, the less stock I put in horsepower, and the more stock I put in a quality suspension. When the going gets tough, it's been the suspension that's saved me the most. And even though the 390 is limited in travel, the WP forks beat the DR or KLR stock in my opinion. Love the videos man. Keep it up!

Hey dork I hope you read this! Long story short- you and your videos got me into motorcycling. I’m 27 and live in Phoenix, never rode before and initially I wanted a dirt bike. But seeing as I didn’t have a truck or trailer, I started YouTubing dual sports and came across your channel. This was probably 7 months ago and since then I’ve financed my very first bike. You guessed it the Ktm 390 adv. this thing is truly a blast and the perfect weight/power ratio for a beginner to learn how to ride on. I also got my Moto endorsement on this bike and it’s very nimble yet has great low down power. Thanks for sharing your experiences here with everyone- I bet it’s cool to see how you influence so many different ppl. Stay safe!

I disagree with your comment that the 390 is not a real adventure bike. I own a 2022 and can go everywhere my buddies on their 1250's go and when I drop it I don't need everyone to stop and help me stand it back up. I am subscriber and watch a lot of your videos however I think you missed the mark on this one. Foot pegs and risers are an easy mod to get any bike to fit. And at less than $8k out the door, 65+mpg and less than $200 per year on insurance, it's a great bike for anyone. I've been riding for 42 years and my last bike was 1350cc and I am completely satisfied with the performance of this bike.

Just saw this. Owned this bike for a year now. 7,400 km down, so far so good. I did buy risers and upgraded the tires to k60 scouts, foot pegs to pivot pegs way more stand up happy now. A lot better grip off road too. Also upgraded a number of other things just to make it more durable. I'm a short guy so this bike is pretty comfortable both on and off road. I also agree with another commenter, once you're out of the break in period its got a bit more pep. I've taken this up some good hill climbs and have done a fair bit of off road. The small Adv market is sure getting tight. But of all the bikes I looked at, this gives you pretty good bang for you're buck. I tried the Versey 300x, and the Himalayan, honestly almost bought the Himalayan over all of them. But one thing both the 390 and the 300x could do that the Himalayan fell short on is keeping up to highway traffic. Seems petty, but I have a fair bit of road miles to get to the good spots and being confirtable on the hwy was a concern. I think the small bike segment is getting pretty awesome with so many more options coming in the next couple years.

Thanks for the video. Have 1000 miles on mine now and I think it will be a great middle of the road bike. I couldn’t imagine wanting to ride a dual sport across the state or take any of the ADV bikes off road on anything more then open trails and fire roads. It needs some upgrades for sure to better suit it for off road riding, but what bike doesn’t benefit from mods? Not to mention you can do those mods and still be thousands less than other ADV bikes. The bike does need to go 620 miles before first service then it will increase the rev limiter. The adjustable suspension was great for improving off-road handling and I think will a sprocket change it will be even more capable off-road.

I have 10,000 on mine so far. I'm not a beginner. I rode my first dirt bike in 1975. I agree it's not a good off-road bike because of the ergos mainly. The arguments against cast wheels are overstated though, just don't lower pressure. It's real problem is that it's a sport-touring frame pretending to be an ADV. It is however excellent on any roadway - light, handles extremely well, engine is amazingly peppy for a 370cc single. It's also the most modern in its class, with all the modern features. A beginner bike? No, I have to disagree. There's not much this bike can't do, in fact it will do more than larger ADVs can off-road because they're too heavy. It's suspension putts the rider too high to be a beginner bike. Get a Yamaha 125/250 dual sport, or a CB300f so your feet can stay on the ground. I recommend it for commuters, weekend or long-distance adventurers, but not for high-skill trails. You'll also need an aftermarket seat because the stock one is uncomfortable.

My current and first ride is a 07 KLX 250. Home riding grounds are in San Juan Mountains in SW Colorado. Very rough jeep roads, with steep switchbacks with an occasional log in the way. Bike came with a 50 sprocket on rear, so good for steep uphill, but bad for highway. I'm not wanting to ride much highway, but when I have to I need to be able to not be run over. Dreams and schemes of riding some of the TAT (which comes through our town). I'm looking at what my upgrade might be. Probably something that can get down the highway with some baggage, but not loose to much of that trail capability. Something with enough zoot to hop over that occasional log. This video and your other dorky creations are quite relevant. Would like to see some log hoppin. LOL

Another good review. The 390 may well be the best beginner ADV, other than a dual sport. My brother took one on our Trans America Trail ride, and the only trouble was the need to replace the cheap chain. We can however attest that the seat does not break in well. Better than a dual sport, but nowhere near an Africa Twin. We strapped a Purple brand seat cushion to it halfway through the trip.

There are so many things which you may do with this bike since the aftermarket accessory support for it is phenomenal! And it isn't just an attractive choice for only beginners, it is a fantastic option for someone like me, a mid-60s guy who rode dirt bikes, strictly, from 8 years old to about 19, when I started riding RD350s....on my way to various other bikes, Honda 250's, including an Elsinore or two, a 2002 V-Strom, later, but back in the 70''s and 80s, I had a couple Seca 750s, with a Virago sandwiched in between...then an R80 G/S (the best bike EVER made, and my all time favorite!), the G/S's first iteration, which I bought new, an R100RS, a couple R100 G/S's, 2 K75S's (Man, what a bike!), 3 R1150RS beauties, of which one still remains.... and so, this 390 Adventure is PERFECT to begin, again, doing a lot more dirt riding on. I still ride fire and logging roads on my R1150RS, but want this 390 so I can enjoy those back roads more, without worrying (about dropping my RS). As far as the footpegs go, that is a VERY easy fix, so that nitpick is a totally useless one, since it is such an easy fix with lots of aftermarket choices to choose from. The way too heavy "Adventure" bikes are a waste of technology and engineering to my, and countless other's, viewpoint, because we don't want or need a way too heavy, 120-150 horsepower off-road bike, that's idiotic, as a 40-50 HP bike is just fine, and besides, the bikes like this KTM are a lot like the 2 strokes that I learned to ride on were: keep it in the powerband, and the bike is a rocket ship, and this KTM is no different, brother: you did NOT have the 390 in her sweet spot if you aren't revving her between 6 and 10 grand, and in fact, you were probably lugging the engine, which is why you felt like it was under powered... If you keep a bike like this in its power band, it will kick ass, guaranteed. She needs revs, bro, and then, it's like the KTM motto says: it's ready to race (with the right technique), definitely. Thanks for the video, bro.

I think a little seat time with the 390 would change your mind, especially if you turn off the traction control. :) It is a lot more capable than it seems, I keep up on double-track with friends on the DRZ's and 690's just fine. Even at 200 lbs I haven't bottomed the suspension aside from deep potholes and it rips on FSRs and trails alike, though I do tend to keep the speed low. I got used to the pegs, standing is no problem for me even though I have a 30" inseam as well. The wheels though.... ugh. When I head out to go offroading or camping I find myself taking it over my 690 Enduro since it's a lot more comfortable on the road and can do 90% of what I can do on the 690 (a better rider would beg to differ of course). It's never left me stranded and I even planned to take it down to Panama, but I got a steal on an 890R so I'm going to have to sell the 390 - but honestly I'm going to miss it, it's a genuinely great bike and a KTM through and through.

I had to put bar risers skid plate and new pegs on my KLR too. The 390 doesn’t need a thermobob or a doohickey, crash bars or a quart of oil in the pannier. KLR was cushy, but it would bottom out on city streets, so I would have had to change the spring on the rear shock and add progressive springs to match. KLR wins on clearance and 21” front tire. 390 wins everything else.

So, I know the whole size doesn't matter when riding a bike. I am 5'7 30 inch inseam I can and have rode taller bikes but they're not comfortable doing so, what do you think about my height in reference to this bike? I am only asking because there are none anywhere near me that I can even go check out. My most ridden bike currently is a dr200 which has got like a 33 inch seat height, but its skinny so I can ride that no problem at all. So, Im just curious before I got pulling the trigger and having one shipped to me lol. Love the videos, thanks man.

FWIW - I've been riding for 54 years and just ordered a 2022, the bike looks like it will produce adrenaline, though not like my '11 300XC or 1190 RC8. I'd reconsidering the emphasis on beginner bike, all one needs to do is check their ego and enjoy the ride.

But if you guys wanna see what this Katy M can do. Head on over to MVDBR channel. They were dirt riders first and alot of their early videos are awesome. Josh had a KTM500, now a T7. Nat had a KTM350, now on the 390. They have been bit by the Adventure bug. But...they do all the single tracks and trails they used to do with the skinny bikes. Nat has shown where a short rider, not just a female rider, can take the 390. With some upgrades and skill, she zipps through the trails swearing all the way🤣

  • @crayb89
    @crayb893 жыл бұрын

I too bought this as my first bike in May. I’m only at 1,000 miles so far but have been racking up the pros and cons. Pro’s: - Very easy to handle and very lightweight, seat height was intimidating at first but bc it’s a single and so light I got over that quickly. - Wide seat - Effortless shifting - Solid Braking - ABS and Traction Control - Solid Tires - Has plenty of speed for myself, can handle speeds of 70-80 just fine. - Smooth Suspension - It’s upgradeable ability- pretty simple to make aftermarket modifications to fit your needs Cons: - Seat is noticeably uncomfortable on longer rides so definitely am looking into replacing - Handlebar was too low for me and put too much stress on my shoulders so I upgraded to risers and way better - Has some buzz throughout handlebars at higher speeds but most singles have that and it’s manageable - Foot pegs are definitely set up for on road and I find them to be just fine but you have the ability to replace them with flat/wider ones for off-roading - Windscreen is too short for longer rides so I look to invest in a bigger one for those longer trips. - Does get blown around quite a bit on windy days or on the expressway and just something I’ve gotten used too - The first few hundred miles the bike would stall when coming to a stop but went away and hasn’t happened since - Now, it shuts off for the first 2 times I start it up and then the third time it’s fine. Really weird. I tried giving it some throttle and that seemed to help sometimes. - Expensive to maintain!!! Definitely going to look into doing my own oil changes! All in all it’s a great first bike like many have said. I love the upgradable capabilities it has all around to fill in the gaps where needed!
