Is This Really The Rule For Where To Place Your Light Modifier?! | Flash Portrait Photography

#photographyforbeginners #portraitphotography #flashphotography
"Place your modifier as far from your subject as the modifier is wide." Have you heard this before during your photography journey? I have and I've always wondered if it meant anything. In this video, I lightheartedly test out this...rule? theory? myth? Let's find out.

Great topic, I have heard from people that the modifier needs to be close to the subject. I put it where I want lol.

Darn right @wlewis5999, put that joint where you need it to get the look you want. There’s a reason everything looks the same these days, too many people follow “rules” and not creativity.

It's crazy how lightning placement can affect the overall outcome of a photo. Great teachings Tog.

The Professor! The Mad Scientist is back in the lab doing his thing! Yo I bust out laughing when you said, "...cant really say cuz I don't really know" 😂 8:15 to 8:27 it finally clicked! Light transition. "Specularity". I never really knew what y'all were talking about until THAT moment. Those 15 or so seconds and studying that side by side for me was a master class. Too much to type. But soooooo much learned right there! Thanks Professor!! 😁 "Photography is your game, play it however you want"

You have a fascinating breakdown using modifiers, and great how it paints a clear picture to get the look you want. I'm new at this, but want to say what the size of the modifier is like "TTL. It's just a starting point to then make any adjustments for what you're wanting.

The rule about setting the distance from the subject to the diameter of the subject was, indeed, the rule for beauty dishes, but was never before the rule for other modifiers. Fifty years ago, most people were using metal reflector modifiers because only the top professionals could afford studio electronic flash. The hot incandescents the rest of us were using were too hot for umbrellas and soft boxes...they would literally set them on fire. Where did such a rule come from? Was there a physical reason for it? The reason for the rule in beauty dishes is because the center plate in a beauty dish actually casts a light shadow in the middle of the light beam. In a well-designed beauty dish (many today are not well-designed anymore) that shadow extended just about as far as the beauty dish was wide...physics at work. Also to note, traditional beauty dishes are metal, so they could be used with hot incandescent lights. Beauty dishes were used for beauty photography: Head shots. But a problem with a metal reflector is that it creates hot spots where portions of the model's face (forehead, nose, cheeks) are closer than other parts of the face. The center plate acted as a flag right in the center of the beam. By placing the model's forehead into the shadow cast by the center plate, the photographer got about half a stop less exposure right on the forehead, cheeks, and nose, preventing burned out highlights. But for other types of modifiers, that rule was never really a rule because it didn't do anything in particular. There was just the standard physics of a light being softer when it's relatively large to the subject.

I really don't follow that rule at all. I get it, I just don't feel I need to follow it. I find that a lot of people are way too rigid when it comes to distances of light to subject and other "rules" when, like you said, just place it where you need it to be for the look you want. Personally, I'm always beyond the recommended distances because they always have my modifier in my shot 95% of the time. As Neil Van Niekerk says, no need to marry yourself to exact measurements here.

It’s funny you say that @jasonbodden8816 because just recently I had two people comment on an unrelated video taking about “the modifier needs to be equal distance…” lol. Too many people just follow “orders” instead of gaining an understanding of where they came from in the first place. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
