Is this Hawaii or Portugal? Discovering São Miguel Island, Azores 🇵🇹

Our first impressions of São Miguel Island, the largest island in the Azores in Portugal.
We rented a car to go around the island, and wow! We were shocked by the beauty this island offers. The Azores is also known as the Hawaii of Europe, but it sure does have its own unique characteristics. From volcanic craters, lakes, mountains, to the outstanding black lava rocks that contrast the blue water by the sea. This island is beautiful!!
On this episode, we explored the west side of the island.
The east side of the island is coming on the next episode.
Hope our videos will give you an idea on how to travel Azores in 2024.

The Azores is what you would get if you fused Ireland and Hawaii together. Green like Ireland, volcanic like Hawaii. Not as hot as Hawaii and not as cold as Ireland, somewhere in between. Average winter temperature is 17 degrees Celsius and average summer temperature is 25 degrees Celsius. Perfect climate to be comfortable and grow everything from Passion Fruit, Oranges, Figs, Pineapples, etc, etc. The seafood is so fresh and amazing. The cows are the happiest cows I’ve ever seen, meaning excellent meat and dairy products. I want to move there when I retire.

Sao Miguel, one of the most beautiful, is the largest, most diverse and exciting. It’s postcard beautiful. S. Jorge is perhaps my favourite. Beautiful, wild and natural. Buzzards dive down on hares 15 feet away from you and it and eat them not paying the slightest attention to you. Flores is pure beauty for 90% of its area. Then you lose your breath when you turn a bend on the road and see the remainder 10%. It’s even more beautiful. Terceira, not the most beautiful, has beautiful architecture. Its "Impérios" (tiny chapel-like constructions beside roads) are priceless. Faial, is beautiful as the others. Surprisingly, its main "city" (8 thousand people) is very cosmopolitan with hundreds of long-distance yachts and their crews.

By some kind of weird coincidence I think we have just met on São Miguel :) I think you were smiling at and waving at my 1,5 year old son and I think it was at that crater view at the beginning of the video - we saw that proposal too :D I agree with your opinion of the island - it is absolutely fantastic; the people are nice and welcoming and views are breathtaking.

that place is beautiful, wow... i didnt know much about Azores. I would like to visit that beach. its cool to be brazilian and recognize the some of the structure (streets, houses, churches...) that are similar to some places here in Brazil because of the portuguese influence through colonization. did some brazilian people thought you guys are brazilians too? (because of the Palmeiras jersey) there are a lot of brazilians in Portugal

The Azores, a hidden secret in the Atlantic, and you want to know which island is the nicest? Well, let me tell you, each island has its own charm, but did you know that the Azores are actually the result of volcanic activity? That's right, these islands are basically just the tips of underwater volcanoes that have risen above the surface. In fact, the island of Faial is home to the Capelinhos Volcano, which erupted in 1957 and added a whole new chunk of land to the island. Talk about a dramatic entrance! The islands are also home to some of the most unique flora and fauna in the world, thanks to their isolated location. The Azores are one of the few places on earth where you can find the endangered Azores bullfinch, a bird that's so rare, it's considered a national symbol. And let's not forget about the iconic hydrangeas that cover the islands, which are actually not native to the Azores, but were introduced by Portuguese settlers in the 16th century. The landscape of the Azores is also dotted with crater lakes, which are actually just ancient volcanoes that have collapsed in on themselves. And did you know that the water in these lakes is often brightly colored, due to the presence of minerals and microorganisms? It's like nature's own work of art.

The natural pool, Ponta da Ferraria, is more enjoyable when the tide is low and you can feel the warmth from the hot springs better because they are more to the bottom of the pool. Every time I see you eating a bifana I look at those and I'm like "oh no". I feel you keep finding the worst places to eat them. Snack-bars arent usually the places for you to have a great food experience, its more something if you're just hungry. There are really good restaurants, around, but many still around are not tourist food experience standards since they are family businesses for many years and tourism only started booming here very recently. Hope you had a good bifana before you left the island. The decorations you saw on the road on your way up to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Paz are for the Holy Spirt festivities in that neighborhood. I know, I live nearby. The Holy Spirt fesitivies haoppen throughout the Azores for months in all islands, in different neighborhoods from Spring till Fall, every weekend. They usually are celebrated during a week in that neighborhood. I'm loving the vlog and you guys energy. Very curious to see the next video.
