"I couldn't support Rangers or Celtic." God I wish more people in Scotland had this mindset. I live in Inverness and it truly sickens me to see the hundreds of Celtic and Rangers shirts about and being able to count on one hand the number of Caley Thistle shirts I see in a day.

@@grindelston5968it’s a massive shame! There could be more to Scottish football if everyone supported their local team instead of supporting Celtic or Rangers. Clubs like Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts and Dundee United should really be closer if they had more fans going to support them instead of the two Glasgow giants. You get clubs from towns like East Kilbride with a population of 70,000 plus not even having a league club. With a population more than Perth and yet they’re down in the Lowland League they should be higher with such a high potential fan base but yet I bet the vast majority support the Glasgow giants.

Freiburger FC (not to be confused with SC Freiburg, the city's pro club these days) won the German championship in the early days and now play in the fifth division, having been down as far as the seventh. Duisburger SV (not to be confused with MSV Duisburg) were national runners-up back in those days and now, after a series of mergers, are in the NINTH division. In France, very sadly Sete, a giant of the early French game, have been liquidated. They had dropped as far as the regional leagues but were back in the fourth tier. If you include Latin America, the early Argentine contenders were all private schools and British expat clubs, who will now play in public parks and in school tournaments, if at all. (A bit like how Old Carthusians and Royal Engineers are essentially recreational teams these days in England.) But it would be good to have a similar thing on continental contenders, if you can swing it. Off the top of my head, Sao Caetano have dropped from Copa Libertadores finals into non-league football (i.e. not even in Serie D) in the space of twenty years. 1. FC Magdeburg were a titan of the Eastern Bloc, winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and fell as low as the unified German fifth tier (although they are now thankfully making their way back.) Dinamo Tbilisi may still be a successful club in Georgia but they now play in front of 2,000 instead of 80,000...

very long story: my hometown's club was a force to be reckoned with in the Mexican 1st Division back in the 80's. there are so many legends regarding the humidity (above 73%), playing on Sundays at 3 in the afternoon and how the "big clubs" would leave here losing by at least 3 to 7 goals. they have one league title that was won in 1952-53 season and two 2nd place finishes in 1985 and 1986. ever since 1995 the club has faced constant disappearances and reincarnations (like 5 or 6 times) and we haven't returned to the top division since then. my hometown's club is on a constant seesaw between the 2nd and 3rd division due to these disappearances and reincarnations. during the 2013-14 season we almost got relegated to the 4th division on the final day of the regular season if it wasn't for both a home win with a last minute goal and a favorable combination of results. then a few months later, the club faced a disaffiliation threat due to unpaid wages racking up to 5 million pesos (almost £234k which is a lot for a 3rd division club here). on 13th September, 2014 the club played its supposed last match on a stormy Saturday night where only 200 people (the most loyal fans) were in attendance. the weather fueled up the uncertainty of the club's future. the team was losing for most of the match until a last minute goal tied and ended the match. a few days later, the news came out that the Mexican Football Federation would take control of the club until they found suitable buyers. then came a family from Mexico City with roots in the town and rebuild the team and made it into a social phenomenon, each Saturday the stadium was filled to the brim with +25k supporters (a very, very, very high attendance for 3rd division football here). you literally had to arrive between 2-2½ hours before kick-off to secure good seats and parking space. the team won a title and hopes were high that we finally found the stable ownership the club needed and that the sky would be the limit. that's until Santos Laguna came in April 2016, things started OK when they announced a partnership with the club and when they also pulled "a Wimbledon to Milton Keynes" (super common in Mexico) in our favor and we were back in the 2nd division. then things started going bad, instead of building up a team to fight for promotion to the 1st division, Santos transformed the team into a feeder/satellite club in order to test their academy players and in early 2018 Santos took full control of the team and the team became inconsistent and got relegated to the 3rd division in 2019 but Santos paid in cash to remain in the 2nd division. in 2020 the club won the 2nd division but the title became worthless because promotion-relegation was vanished (the Liga MX wants to copy everything the ML$ does). in 2021 they finished 2nd. but in April 2022 Santos sold the club to new owners and these new owners moved the franchise to somewhere else and we were left without football for like 2 months until an old directive staff member of the club bought a 3rd division franchise with the help of a group of businesspeople and built a very serious project and a very competitive team which won 22 matches, drew 9 and lost only 2. we won the championship and the right to be promoted but then the Federation said no because we lacked some BS called the "Plus License" which they pulled out from their arse out of the blue (just to cover up the fact that Santos was unhappy that the club was doing really great without them). and because of that we remain on the 3rd division. and even if we manage to get that Plus License, we have to win back our right for promotion instead of having it respected.

In South Africa we have a team named Moroka Swallows (I actually supported them), who were one of the giants of ZA Football - one of the original Soweto Teams with trophies galore until the 90s. In the late 2000's they fell just one point of winning the title, they won a domestic cup a season later - but then dreadful ownership and decision making virtually destroyed the club and less than 5 years later were relegated to the amateur 4th tier of ZA Football. Fortunately a satellite club has been formed (Swallows FC), and through buy outs and promotions are back in the ZA Top League. But yeah a fall within 5 years from cup winners to 4th tier regional football is some fall.

I would say though that Cowdenbeath's fall from grace has been just as big, if not bigger than East Stirlingshire's (Unfortunate since I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the Blue Brazil). Last season they finished 15th in the Lowland League. I’ve been to Berwick and Broomhill in the Lowland League this season. Both attract about 400 people. Broomhill ground share with Dumbarton at the rock. It was well worth the visit although I’m at a loss to see how their games can make any money for the team. Berwick host the Bandits speedway (and possibly Tweedmouth of the East Of Scotland League) so their ground is a definite money maker in contrast to rivals.

@anthonymitchell8893 I probably would tend to agree I think winning the old first division with Forest after coming up from the old 2nd division was every bit as special ( but maybe not quite as special if tgat makes sense ) as winning the European Cup twice, obviously the European Cup is the pinnacle, but the state Manchester United were in when Ferguson to over was diabolical and let's be honest money or not he kept them at the top or near the top for a sustained amount of time over 25 years,my point about Aberdeen btw was actually the money it was pretty much a home grown team so to speak and to win a European trophy with tham albeit the Cup winners Cup was nothing short of a miracle obviously he won the league 3 times I think and the Scottish cup 3 or 4 times, nowhere near as hard as winning the Eglish league mind you but he would have had a miniscule budget compared to Ranger and Celtic, think he also won a couple of league cups with them.

I remember writing to the short-lived Scottish Football Weekly magazine in the late 1970s, stating that it seemed strange that Falkirk had three league teams (if you included Stenhousemuir) while Edinburgh only had two. I did suggest that East Stirlingshire moved to the athletics stadium in nearby Grangemouth, where they might attract new supporters. This was their letter of the week! I know that the Grangemouth venue was considered after Firs Park was abandoned but obviously that didn't work out. The East Stirlingshire guy at 9:00 hit the nail on the head, when he said that there were better supported teams coming up through the pyramid and hinted that East Stirlingshire were unlikely to be back in the Scottish League any time soon. For many decades, the geographical distribution of Scottish League teams was a bit odd, e.g. with four clubs in small towns in Angus and only Aberdeen to the north of them. The expansion to 42 clubs and the promotion play-offs involving the Highland and Lowland Leagues has normalised things to a great extent, although you get the odd quirk where Kelty were promoted and they are only three or four miles from Cowdenbeath (who have subsequently dropped down to the Lowland League).

Shire were my local team for a number of years but they were floating around the bottom of the leagues for years. It was almost a formality they would eventually be relegated out of the pyramid system. I visited Firs Park a couple of years after going to games years ago and it’s in a sorry state. Clyde have suffered a bigger fall from grace. Formerly a fair-sized club with good attendances and some cup success, it’s entirely possible they’ll fall out of the SPFL. Both Firs Park and Brockville were based in brilliant locations and were a good day out.

Will be honest Victoria Road and Firs street have a bit of a reputation so I wouldn’t go there at night. I mind reading these streets have the highest police attendance in Falkirk along with Stewart Road which is further up. In fairness I never had any bother in the 5 years that I lived there. Their move from the greyhound track Shawfield in Glasgow to Cumbernauld seemed a good idea for Clyde at the time but obviously that didn't work out. Ground-sharing at Hamilton always seemed a bit of a short-term gamble or alternatively a long-term downward spiral. You would have to be a serious supporter to follow them to their various home grounds over the years. However I note that Clyde are proposing to move back into Glasgow at Gallowgate and that may set them on an upward path again.

I admire the loyalty and passion of those trying to say how certain clubs don't deserve to be in a lowly position, but you have to understand basic arithmetic. Bums on seats means money incoming, which will pay for better facilities and higher salaries to attract better players. You won't get more bums on seats when your team plays lower league football and people can sit at home and watch Messi, Ronaldo etc on television, it's just a fact of life. The total population of Scotland is 5.5 million, while England is about 57 million - that helps to explain why Scottish football will never generate the interest or income that the top teams in England can get. Enjoy your dreams by all means, but try to be realistic.

They won 7 league titles between the 1900s and the 1920s - back when Serie A was still amateur - but since the end of WWII they declined slowly and painfully, and even went under twice in 1990 and 2010. Nowadays they sit in Serie C - the third tier of Italian football - but they likely won't return to the top flight anytime soon.

Agreed. The reality is we need more teams getting relegated out of League 2, but we also need increased relegation from the Lowland league as well. For the next dozen years at current rate, every time a team gets promoted from East/West Scotland Premier, they will automatically become a favourite for the Lowland League. By truly opening up the leagues with at least 2 guaranteed promotion spots each year, it will give teams like East Stirling a bigger promotion prize to go for.
