The SNES controller is just so... handsome. Made me droll as kid (never got it).
I work for a tech company, and I learned that they can make these devices so cheap by taking chips from other old devices and devices that have been thrown away and repurposing them for emulation handhelds like this. That’s why they scratch off the serials.

I don't want to go all "environmentalist," (and I know China is probably only doing it to make money) but it's really a fantastic way to recycle. 👌 I'm pretty sure last year's popular "Miyoo Mini" recycled a lot of obsolete cell phone parts.

A decade ago you could buy a tablet from microcenter for 10 buck's. I remember going a across a commenter on reddit saying that they read an article that the ps4 controller costs 15 bucks to make(that may have been the dual sense actually,. They're Chinese made electronics and plastics, I wouldn't be surprised if it costs a couple bucks) I'm sick of hearing from KZread reviewers on 20-30 dollar controllers at the very least complaining about lower grade plastics and then justifying it cause of the cost. The overwhelming bulk of the cost is the engineer who designed the controller to have a feel that defies the laws of.physics. That's why I'm into controller collecting cause I feel I'm actually paying for/tracks an engineers hour has opposed to a 20 dollar chinese made blender that has been touched up/refreshed from a design that was patented a half a century ago. I bought an NYXI,a chinese brand themselves selling 50 dollar Switch controllers that don't even have HD haptics, and I received an email complaining pandemics situation justifying a dollar or so increase. 50 buck bucko'roos wasnt enough to eat the cost? You had to complain to the customer? This proves to me that this is a mindset thing.(all those companies making record profits while they were bellyaching about supply chain costs due to the pandemics)

The PowKiddy V90 had and has its place. But this? It's pure eWaste. It's better to have a PS Vita Slim, for around USD $150 Used, then jailbreak it, and game on it from 2017. It's still worth keeping today. Rather than wasting money endlessly collecting all these compromised devices. A decent sidegrade / upgrade is the $300 GPD XD Plus in 2018, or 2019 with Razer JungleCat $100 and $500 Samsung S10+, or the 2022 Retroid Pocket 3+ for $150 price. The dozens and dozens of other PocketGo, PowKiddy, Evercade, Anbernic, Retroid, and GPD devices ranging from $50 to $300, they really aren't worth it when you think about it objectively. The options I listed above are all Pocketable, and they can play from Atari upto PSP flawlessly, and have mixed success with other systems like PS2, 3DS, GameCube, Wii, PS Vita and Android. So it's moreso "modern" and not really "retro", which can be done very cheaply. But for systems like Xbox, 360, PS3, WiiU, NSwitch, PS4, and Windows Games you have to step up to a different price bracket ($500 - $999) and different category of devices (SteamDeck, Laptops, Desktops). edit: spelling

The buttons? They didn't bother me at all. The games running at 30 percent speed is what sucks.
Ugh, this looks really good. Screen-tearing and GBA/SNES issues is honestly the only downfall. Hoping that custom firmware comes about.
5:55 Also the fact that the lines are diagonal instead of horizontal means they may have used a portrait-mode display and put it in sideways.
Got myself a copy of this recently, what I can say is you absolutely get what you pay for and there are ways to pay less for it (data frog don’t manufacture these, they resell them), but for MAME, it’s good!
I am just rather surprised the ROMs are in alphabetical order! And using an 18650 cell? That's pretty awesome actually.
I will say that while this seems shockingly good for the price, if you’re looking for a similar device performance-wise while also having CFW and (definitely minimal) SNES capability, I’ve been a big fan of the Powkiddy V90 for a while now. It provides a nice performance with a GBA SP form factor, and a $40-$50 price tag. At this point, I still have yet to see a nicer budget device.

I'm honestly very impressed with the UI of the OS. I just got an Rg300x, and the OS on the Datafrog seems a lot more user friendly, and more visually appealing with artwork for games and even a search function. Pretty impressive.
I guess it all comes down to how popular it becomes. If it can take a software update maybe things could be optimized on it. It just sems like it needs a lot tweaks and for a company to put in all that time and effort for $20 device, would be hard to justify. If they sell a ton, and people see there is a use for a device like this, then custom roms will show up.
I just got mine yesterday, and honestly, for the $20 I paid for it, it is not that bad. Under SNES and GBA runs pretty well. Screen tearing is not great, but for some light work, it is tolerable for me. Data Frog is actually actively updating it, too, though it appears their latest build performs worse for SNES, wrong direction! There is some developer interest in it too but not clear yet if there is any actual opportunity there.

got mine through yesterday and to be honest, for the price, its pretty good. Not perfect but I'm happy with it. BTW the buttons are lilac and purple, on your video Taki they appear grey and blue. Жыл бұрын
I kind of feel like Y and B would be a better option for the concave buttons if the button mappings could change for NES/GB.
The new sf-2000 are being shipped with updated hardware and they have the key mapping on them. Out-of-the-box you might be pleasantly surprised how it plays now seeing how this review is 5 months ago and the ones that are coming out now they have black blue yellow, all kinds of colors. Not that colors make it any better but I will tell you my favorite is the black one. I have one of each color. I'm still trying to find a white one. They have also been redesigned. The buttons look different along with some labeling of ports. Maybe you should buy one of the updated ones and give another review😁
I love that you put the price in the KZread image. You should do that with all your videos.
When I decided to buy one of these, it was with the hope that the hardware was decent. I haven't gotten mine yet, but it sounds like that might be the case (minus the issue with some of the face buttons getting stuck under the shell, which some reviewers have encountered). My hope is that the popularity of this will motivate someone to create a customer FW for it. If that happens, and this can play all of the supported systems well, this could be an absolute steal at $20-25. It would behoove Data Frog to let this happen, as it would probably drive their sales through the roof.

It's a proprietary ALi TDS2 RTOS, linked together with all of the software to huge 12 MB bisrv.asd file. One can't swap parts of it, only change it as whole. There's also a Resources folder with, well, menu resources :-) The card is standard FAT32, all of the extensions are all made up to deter casual mods. Screen tearing is almost impossible to fix, there are several hardware modules (GE = Graphic [sic] Engine, GMA = Graphic [sic] Memory Access and the LCD itself) all racing the beam at once with seemingly no provision to sync. The Display device driver (also called VPO in places) might be handling a video retrace IRQ, but that's seemingly not exposed as an API. Ah and there's never been a Linux kernel built for these chips at all, only for some higher end dual core ones.

Thats it, seen it often enough, just ordered one to try to reverse what SoC is on there. If there is some update, one could dissect it to find out more too.
I think because they apparently use whatever available parts, quality differs for each handheld. Mine runs most the SNES games too slow. But the GB, GBA, NES games and many Sega games run well. If you press start and select at the same time, the hanheld has four save slots for each game, which you'll want to use because the individual games don't tend to hold their saves. But the save slots work flawlessly. I am playing a lot of games I always wanted to play, so this has been a great value. I hope to get a better one at some point to play N64, Dreamcast, PS1, SNES at some point; but this was a great starter handheld emulator for me.

Screen tearing in general doesnt bother me unless its affecting the game in such a way where i dont know what's going on, mainly due to getting into the zone or tunnel visioning once i really get playing. Sadly the inconsistent loading quality makes this a hard pass for consideration. That said for a 20$ price tag and a decent battery you could try and rig together game demos of random gameplay in rom form and just have this act like a background piece on a shelf, similar to moving picture frames.
Wow that Capcom jingle was rad that slow.
You said that youve updated the Firmware? How did you do that?
i dont get it, what do you mean it would be closer to original hardware? the gameboy had you put your thumb halfway over both buttons?
Anything shaped like a SNES controller gets my attention.
How many space left in the sd card came with it?
