I can’t take my eyes off of it. It is positively beautiful. My father was a Carpenter who had a work shop with the most fascinating tools which I was reminded of while watching this video. He always allowed me to try to use them and did not consider them off limits when I was growing up. I could smell some of the chemicals as I saw you use them and it felt like I was there with you. My mother was an Architect who also shared her interests with me. I am a 74yr old lady living in a Condo of a gated community north of New Orleans. Thank you for sharing your gift with others and me. It gave me such joy to watch you so carefully bring the piece back to what it once was.

As a smith I've made a whole load of replacement keys for furniture restorers. Never ditch the original locks, some may even hold their own value No matter how old the lock, a good smith will cut you a key, infact the older the easier (antique furniture locks are generally exceedingly simple single-lever designs or simple warded setups that pick in a minute or two)

I went through the same process restoring an antique piano. They had painted that same ugly cream over it, and then paint it black over that. They stripped off the molding and stapled Naugahyde all over it. The saddest part is that it’s still an excellent instrument with a great sound board. Made by the Chicago Cable company, it was a Greek design and all of the decorative column pieces from the front are permanently gone. But I managed to get a decent black brown stain on it. Due to extensive paint damage, I couldn’t go with the original cherry wood color. Watching this video really brings back a lot of memories.

Здравствуйте. Великолепная работа реставратора. Я не знаю, кто изначально был автором сего творенья, но реставрация превратила этот комодик в настоящее произведение искусства.

Ich denke, es ist eher zweites Biedermeier, gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, also um 1870 entstanden. Ein gutes Kriterium ist die Furnierdicke. Im ersten Biedermeier hatte man noch dickeres gesägtes Furnier. Erst später konnte man es mit breiten Messern schaben. Auch das Schloß und Scharniere sind typisch für spätes 19. Das Ergebnis ist sehr gut. Auch die Wurmlöcher sind unsichtbar verschwunden. Eine Schellack Politur hätte zwar der Oberfläche noch etwas mehr Glanz gegeben, wäre aber für diesen Schrank zu aufwendig. Hat mich gefreut, das neue Werk zu sehen.

@@chrigunrestauration Stimmt, ich glaube die Füße sind eventuell noch später entstanden oder von einem anderen Möbel entliehen als man es zum Stilmöbel umrestauriert hat. Aber so schaut es schon richtig gut aus!

What a great project! I often wonder why people paint over such gorgeous wood.... but then I recall that when I was a teenager, I did the same thing... painted my Mom's little side-table white... 40 years later, I stripped off the white paint and re-finished the beautiful wood with Danish Oil and I have it in my living room 60 years after I painted it white... Your project turned out beautiful!

Not everyone likes the chaos of woodgrain. It's distracting to me. I like my walls and furniture monochrome and with clean sharp lines. That said, all those little details on this piece would be too distracting even in pure white.

I think it’s more about when people paint irresponsibly in ways that damage the piece or dry the wood - it shows a kind of lack of care and wastefulness that is irresponsible. At least since we have access to so much information about good ways to do it these days - I mean making mistakes is fine and there’s no need to preserve everything - I am making an 1800’s spinning wheel operational again and there are some sacrifices that must be made (needing to replace the parts with lead in them for example) but it’s important to be respectful of our resources too

This is so comforting. My grandparents used to own an antique shop and would often be renovating old furniture. Sometimes i would help. You always miss the ones you love who have passed away, but then certain things trigger really strong memories and its like you're right back there, with them. Im so glad i stumbled across your video. You do beautiful work. It must take you 10 times longer to do while trying the record each step. You have so much patience. 🙏

Thank you for this video. I just stumbled upon it and it brought back so many childhood memories. At 76 I can still remember the smell of my grandfather’s wood working basement. I can visualize the large wooden vice he used, my job was to turn the wood handle to close it up. I think I was about six or seven when he taught me how to use a hand saw. Even though I was his only granddaughter I think he recognized my mechanical skills even at a young age. Those lessons served me well as an adult, leaving the typewriter behind I worked with my hands in many areas, wood and machine shop and even in a small foundry. Again, thank you for bringing back cherished memories. 😊

Biedermeier was an early 19th century art movement from central Europe. Wikipedia says 1815 to 1848. Pieces had straight lines with curved overhanging edges at the top and often used matched burl wood as a design element. Expensive pieces had gilded trims and sometimes used ebony for detailing. I once owned a pine Biedermeier desk from Sweden that was made for a lower class market and had none of those fancy pieces except for the curved and overhanging wide top. I would say this piece, small but made of mahogany, was for a middle market.

Gosh I adore your videos. What a beautiful piece of cabinetry you brought back to life from that painted hell!! That was such a good pair with my Saturday morning coffee after a long week. I love that there is no annoying music, just simple, wonderful woodworking noises and satisfying visuals. We had a workshop/woodshop in out basement when I was a child, so this was such a treat to watch and listen too. You take such care, time and patience with these restorations and I hope you lnow how much your followers appreciate you and your craft! Thank you for such wonderful, gorgeous and delightful content! This channel is a diamond in the cesspool tendencies of youtube, I swear!!

Over the years fine furniture is used, people sell it and the new buyers may not like the look of the cabinet and decide to paint it to match their decor or their style and hide scratches and dings that come with life. They think the new look is nice and live with it for more years until tastes change and they either move it to the curb or sell it in a yard sale. The fact that it was once valuable is lost. Most people don’t care who made it…..it’s not a piece of art to be polished and showcased…it’s a cabinet or a chair or an old table. Young people today look for bargains on line or in second hand shops because it’s what they can afford. Take it home and throw a coat of paint on it and use it and love it. Young neighbours of mine bought an old house with a large beautiful fireplace mantle with attached mirror all of it ornately carved and stained. His wife thought it too dark for the room and so they painted it white. Their friends all thought it looked much better. A hundred years from now new owners will gnash their teeth and wonder why someone would ruin a work of art. But that’s how life moves and so we are grateful for the restorers who can bring back the original beauty.

Watching you do this painstakingly beautiful work is so relaxing to me. I'm 78 now and my husband used to do quite a bit of cabinet work and would repair some personal pieces for family and friends. I would watch him and help "fetch" some of his needed supplies. He died in 2006 of cancer and I miss him every day. Watching you brings back memories of peaceful (for the most part!) companionship. Thank you.

Gorgeous restoration! My father, in 1960, had beautiful tongue and groove solid mahogany paneling put all throughout our den, living room and dining room and even in the “picture windows”. So rare to see it any more. It darkened so much over the years.

I really like the Biedermeier style and am sorry that later generations did not appreciate the heavy forms. The true beauty was in the wonderful wood patterns. My favorite is the light fruit wood veneers and black lacquer.

Very nice job! A trick I learned while working for a furniture restorer was after using paint stripper, scrape off the excess paint then use wire wool with hot soapy water, it cleans up the last bits of paint and stripper out of the grain and areas of detail. It often saves having to remove some parts.

Not Biedermeier, but it came out gorgeously! Biedermeier doesn't have fancy, scrolled feet. They're usually extremely simple, sometimes heavy and blockish and sometimes slender and tapered. You did the most amazing job on it!

In Vienna it would be certainly considered a copy, true Biedermeiers are those made between the Vienna Congress and the 1848 Revolte.. I have never payed attention to the Biedermeier Schränke feet but in seeing some examples in internet it is true that most of them are just straight. The top, with rounded corners reminds me of furniture of the 1930ies, more than Biedermeier.

How can you tell and what do I look for in such furniture. I'm over here in Germany and have some very old furniture, very bulky and blockish with a key to unlock the cabinets. We got them from my hubby's ex-boss's mom who was very on in her years before she passed. Oh and edit... man these couple of cabinets are so very heavy. The furniture here they they are just about giving away is insane, so much of it, as the older generation passes on and then new generation embraces cheap IKEA crap.

That was the most satisfying paint stripping I have seen lately. Beautiful wood under all the paint.

It is a shame that so many beautiful pieces of furniture have been painted over, but I know the reason! I inherited my great-grandmother's bedroom furniture when I was 9 years old. It had layers and layers of paint on it. I thought, gee thanks! But when I started high school, my lovely family had it professionally refinished for me and WOW!!! It's gorgeous! And I still have every piece of it still and I'm now in my 50's! But, my grandmother told me that it used to be fashionable to paint your furniture every year! People couldn't afford to buy new furniture every year so, it got painted instead! No matter what color, it just had to be done lol!

Now that reminded me of that 200 years old door I had to restore once during my apprenticeship... Took me a full week and 3 different products just to get that old paint off... You can't imagine how much it pleased me to see that paint go off rather easily here. It was a beautiful door with lots of delicate details. barely any flat surfaces like with this thing. In the end it looked almost brand new and the customer was very pleased, so it was worth it... But never again do I want to spend that much time on carefully scraping and sanding off paint 😂

It is possible, but Biedermeier was generally a lighter wood. Acrh Digest published a big article on Niall Smith's (?) collection in the mid '80s. you might want to refer to that. It looks Edwardian to me and it is beautifully redone. (The simple shapes are similar.)You are a master !

I have a Biedermeier that is dark cherry veneer with black trim and legs. It has the original glass and cupboard felt lining. When you look inside the lower cabinet it looks like it was made from older furniture pieces. It is over 200 years old and passed down through family. I wish I could restore it to it's original beauty.

Unbelievable makeover! You are an excellent woodworker and furniture restoration artist! That job had to have taken quite awhile. That piece looks gorgeous. Great job, I applaud you!

I really enjoyed watching your process and expertise. I had never known how restorers used tools to make new trim(like on the front of the cabinet doors) it was nice to see that technique. I think the repairs were amazing. It was a beautiful job by a talented craftsman. Thank you for sharing.

This makes me think of a story my grandmom always told about her mother when ur mom went to paint her furniture yellow in the 50s and my grandmom was horrified and her mother said "you try looking at the same damn table for 80 years im sick of it its mine and im tired of looking at wood" That is to say, even when restoring those paint jobs dont forget about the joy that painting it mightve caused the person that owned it for a long time ❤

Was there any writing on the back panel or under the drawers to identify it? The nail looked hand forged, very old. And the grain was stunning, certainly possible. Thank you for sharing, but I agree, longer time needed at end of video to admire your work.

Beautiful restoring job. I really like the close-ups. I don’t know enough about Biedermeier artifacts to know if it’s really from that period or not. In Wien, the City Museum had a terrific exhibit on the Biedermeier era, the Congress of Wien, etc. in 1987-1988. I’m not sure how much furniture from that period (early 1800s) could have survived to today.

Thanks. It turns out that the cabinet is from around 1900n. it is not Biedermeier. But still a nice piece.

This brings back happy memories of helping my mum restore old pieces of furniture decades ago. Not to your high standards mind. The old paint coming off is satisfying, but she sanded it all by hand and it would take weeks.

🌸 such a gorgeous piece of furniture I love the look of natural wood When I was younger my mom had full set of mahogany furniture, dinner 6 seater set, coffee table, wardrobes, beds etc It was so heartbreaking to sell all quickly so we can move away abroad. My dear mother didn’t get the price they were actually worth However I’m sure new owners looked after them with same love & respect my mom had for it I remember my chore was polishing the dining table & chairs, and coffee table with tv cabinet My brother had bedroom, it was so beautiful such a pleasure watching the intricate lines of the tree’s time period It inspired me to do art, I still practice my art. All stemmed from me admiring natural beauty of the wood

It worked something like this: The 1800s and early 1900s homes were dark. Lighting was gas lamps or candles. But good quality wood was easily available, so most furniture was finished as natural wood. Often the finish would darken with age, but the furniture was still in keeping with the house. By the 1950s electric lights were common in most cities and some parts (but not all) of the country. The electric lights made the inside of the house brighter, but the old dark furniture just sucked up light, and was considered an eyesore. For those that couldn't buy new furniture easily, repainting the old furniture in lighter colors was the usual thing. This cabinet seems to have been repainted moderately well. I don't see a lot of brush strokes and paint runs, and the white and gold probably worked fairly well when it was still fairly new. Now we still have bright houses, in fact rather brighter houses than the 1950s, but everything is plastic or metal, and wood is a luxury, or at least unusual. Obviously (to us) natural wood seems more elegant and exotic than painted wood, and a dark piece of furniture contrasts with all of the lighter colored plastic, and blends well with the black frame around the flat screen TV. So the now chipped, stained, and fading paint comes back off.

This was a 70's thing. My mother did this to her French living room furniture in Navajo white. Painted gold in the filigree. Made teal drapes and layed down burgundy carpet..., shag carpet. In a Spanish style Adobe home. Love my mom.
