Most excellent video R.B. thank you for the time and effort it took to make and edit this video. P.s. SUPER NINTENDO RULES (even the purple parts...as a matter of fact, don't take my purple parts. Maybe that's why I have no interest in 8-bit style indy games? I had a SNES growing up. Never thought about that until now.
I think the generation the SNES is attached to is one of the greatest generations. I think Genesis (and every addon) and the SNES defined gaming going forward. Those 2D, 16-bit graphics are beautiful, and being able to go to an arcade was exciting.

I grew up with a Super Nintendo, but naturally "moved on" as the 64, PS1, Gamecube, Xbox 360, and so on as they came along. But then the Wii had the Virtual Console and so I went further down the SNES iceberg, playing games like Act Raiser, Super Castlevania IV, and Contra III for the first time, and that's when I really realized how great its games were and how well they hold up. Excellent video and choice of games to show off, man!

I was lucky enough to have all 3 of those games growing up, but I have forgotten how hard it could be to get those games back in the day. Games didn't stay in stock, rental stores only had a limited selection, and used game stores were more rare. So even if you were aware of how good these games are, you might never have had the chance to try them out. The VC was great for that, and I'm glad you finally got the chance to try them! They're definitely highlights of the console library!
@ianswift3521

if it wasnt for rompacks in the early 2000s i would never have played actraiser and subsequently bought the cartridge.
The SNES/SFC and the Genesis/Megadrive were unique and special, and made each other better.
I didn’t grow up with the Super Nintendo, but since I started collecting in 2017, it had quickly become one of my absolute favorite consoles to collect and play games for, such a fantastic library with graphics and gameplay that aged beautifully. It is definitely one of my favorite consoles personally.
Super Nintendo will always be my all-time favorite cause it's the first system my family owned. Still remember coming home from school and seeing my mom in the living room playing Super Mario World after she constantly told us she would never buy any video games. I'm still going back and enjoying the games I missed out on and overlooked when I was a kid.
Whoa! Look how big your audience is getting!! Great work, Retro Bird! You deserve it!
It's worth remembering that the SNES's biggest rival, the Genesis (Megadrive), came out well over a year before the SNES, during a time of great technical innovation, and it still held it's own against Nintendo's juggernaut.
@inceptional

In some ways, I think that's even more apt for the PC Engine, which really was the first system to make that jump. It even did CD console gaming first too. Both SNES and Genesis were really just next obvious steps from the PC Engine in most ways. The Genesis certainly so, at it simply increased most of the same specs a bit and went with that (more sprites, more backgrounds, one more button, etc. But less colours). SNES introduced some very novel things like proper transparency, Mode 7, and its truly defining controller, but was ultimately just following the lead of the other two systems too when all is said and done (more sprites, more backgrounds, etc). So, yeah, even as a SNES fan first, I think I'd like to give PC Engine the credit it's due there for truly starting the best generation in console gaming imo.

@@FatNorthernBigot Yeah, it certainly held its own technically in many ways. And it ultimately competed pretty much on a level playing field in America and ended up selling in very similar numbers, both in part because of solid hardware and also Sega's hardcore marketing too. It was a similar story in Europe and "other" territories also. Although, obviously, in Japan the SNES really stood on its own there. And I still think the PC Engine deserves a nod there too, as it came out long before the SNES and about a year before Genesis, and yet managed to output more colours on-screen than both, is capable of superior DMA than both [from what I'm told], and even has a faster CPU than that SNES and on par with the Genesis. That's dang impressive for an "8-bit" console. It certainly blew away the likes of the NES and Master System by a long ways when it launched. And it's remarkable how well it stands toe to toe with those two other giants at times. It even outsold the Genesis in Japan, although was a bit of flop elsewhere. The Neo Geo deserves a mention too, but that was a whole other beast. Still, I give it acknowledgement. :) I'd say in terms of system capabilities it would go like this: Neo Geo > SNES Genesis > PC Engine. In terms of libraries, based on quality plus number of games, it would go like this: SNES ≈> Genesis > PC Engine And in terms of hardware sales it would go like this: SNES > Genesis > PC Engine > Neo Geo. I guess that's likely why the SNES is ultimately regarded as the best system overall and even of all time by so many people. It was a very competitive generation to be sure, with a group of 2D consoles that have really help up.

I'd have probably argued for SNES in the console wars as a kid, while still arguing both are great. With regard to the SNES' frame rate, I believe it fluctuated around 59fps, which can cause issues with some display scalers. That being said, my OSSC doesn't seem to have any problems with it. Keep doing what you do Banana-man, I love your channel!
First off just want to say I love the channel! I find your videos to be much more entertaining than most retro videos I watch. I just thought I'd drop a little tip about Trinitrons. It looks like your TV might have a bit of the classic Sony "red push" issue going on from your footage. There's a setting in the service menu (labeled slightly different on different models) it usually goes by something to the effect of AXNT or AXIS. If you disable that, or turn down in some cases, you can greatly improve the amount of red push seen on the screen. My clear GBC, well my old eyes have trouble seeing the small screen nowadays, and I don't own a backlit GBA SP, just a regular one, so those are relegated to there only. Shame the DS isn't GBC compatible as well, would really help.
The console is almost perfect. It would be nicer in black/red color, it doesn't have the"high definition graphics" label, the volume control for the headphones and the "blast processing power"...but, it is almost perfect😊
I loved the SNES. It was my last Nintendo console, and the loss of 3rd party support was a big part of that.
Plus S-Video support right out the box.
The A B buttons being convex and the X and Y being concave on the US version is pretty different to what I grew up with in England. No concave buttons whatsoever, but a lovely Green , Blue, Yellow and Red instead of the purple. Sega got way more arcade ports than Snes, and the best shmups in all of gaming.
I grew up with both a NES and my Sega Genesis, though I knew quite a few people who owned a SNES (friends and cousins), there's a plethora of game's I enjoy on the SNES to this day like Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country trilogy, TMNT IV: Turtles in time, Pocky and Rocky, Zelda: A Link to the past, Super Metroid, Tetris/Dr. Mario, Killer Instinct, etc.
Great video! I grew up in the '90s, so I actually agree. The SNES has aged like a fine wine! As a kid, I only had an NES and Genesis, but I did get to play the SNES from time to time at friends and neighbors' houses. Honestly, the 16-bit era blew me away when I was little. It is hard for me to choose between the SNES and Genesis as my favorite, too. I don't care, though, since still play both consoles and have a blast!
The Super Nintendo is amazing and full of wonderful classic games. But I do love other gaming consoles like the Nintendo GameCube more. I hope this becomes a series covering more gaming consoles. Cool video. ^_^
I really have to give it to the Snes and always have, bias and non bias. It is just absolutely superb in all categories! To be honest the 16 bit era is superior to what came next, and I think that the ease of use is the driving factor. Little to no load times, plug a game in and you are good, people tend to forget that aspect often. We waste so much time in loading, as great as the generations after were, they take more time starting and transitioning. The games were solid and many are works of art, it is a close call between Snes and Genesis. It is all speculation but I think the Snes really holds its own in contest, without needing much debate to back up it's credentials.

I agree with you on the SNES being my favorite. Yes, it helped that I was a teen in the 90's. And I believe they worked hard at being great with having stiff competition from the Genesis. Great times!
Personal favorite 2D console is the Sega Genesis and 3D is Xbox 360. Each had the best competition IMO and think is a great thing (I also love SNES/PS3 with TG-16/Wii growing on me yearly).
Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Mega Man, Bomberman, Earthbound, Final Fantasy do I need to go on? SNES
The dreamcast controller is amazing! The dirty dog is the game cube controller...
I agree. The SNES took what was best about the 8-Bit generation and brought it to a new level. Visuals, music, new ways to play. It was a golden age of play. I still have my launch SNES
Great video as always! Now we're hoping to see the sequel: "Is the Wonderswan the Fourth Greatest Gaming Handheld Ever?"
7:20 pro-tip about Super-R-Type for SNES, there's an IPS patch that enables the SA-1 chip and eliminates slowdown. The same guy made patches for Contra 3 and Gradius 3 as well. Gradius 3 was especially notorious for slowdown since it was a launch title, so the developers didn't have the experience on how to maximize the consoles hardware yet. konami learned quickly though.
I grew up with genesis but got an snes in my mid teens and never looked back. Super Metroid and Zelda ALTTP were both my favorite games from their franchises. With classics like Harvest Moon, Pilotwings, Biker Mice, and MegaManX, my free time was spent.
That Nanner Mask was breathtaking 😅
Ok, I think you’ve convinced me. So many great games that are so fun to play with such great and varied soundtracks, so much passion from games made by Nintendo as well as third-party support, so many genres well represented, especially RPGs, platformers, and sports games, and so many underrated titles, such as The Lion King, the Super Star Wars trilogy, Jim Powers’ The Lost Dimension, and Aladdin. The NES was of course my first love but the SNES was so much more advanced and yet had games that were so much more fun and exciting than many games on later systems. And yes, it spawned my favorite video game trilogy of all time, the DKC trilogy, which had such epic OSTs, like Stickerbrush Symphony, Hot Head Bop, and Bayou Boogie!!😮 I guess the only weakness IMO was a lack of racing games.
I grew up with the Genesis but over the past few years I've been playing a crap ton of SNES games and I've realized I missed out big time.

Indeed you had, better late than never as they say.
I got into video games because of the arcade game Primal Rage so when I got to look around at Toys’R’Us I found a few choices. I had to decide between Genesis and SNES. I checked out the color theme for each and the SNES being purple and grey looked like something that belonged in my younger sisters room. And that was the turning point. So yeah for me the purple still throws me off even though today I love the color purple 😂
The snes had an amazing library that covered pretty much every genre. The only ones I can think of that can hang with it is the first two PlayStations. You could find something for everyone on those things
I had genesis but it was always a treat to go to a friend’s house with SNES.
I'm still finding SNES gems now that I'm playing Japanese games we never got here
The last years of SNES gave birth to modern gaming. Games starting looking really good and were getting long. You could save. Starting to feel open world. Does anyone start playing LttP, FF6, or Chrono Trigger and say I can't handle these old graphics and primitive gameplay? Never, not even to this day. Because this is exactly when games got truely classic.

wow almost 700 comments! you're really blowing up retrobird! i used to believe the SNES was the greatest, and certainly my favorite. but after diving much further into the PSX library, i am now at odds. It's definitely one of those two, and i lean kind of toward the PSX these days. It's got tons of the SNES flavor and some of the greatest games of the 90s on top of that. SNES for me will always carry my two favorite games of all time: Mario World and Link to the Past. But the PSX has a much larger library of GOATs and tons of just "plain" A+ great games. it helps that the PSX has tons of SNES ports and arcade ports of that 90s pixel golden age, along with some incredible 3d games. it's tough. i lean PSX, but used to claim SNES. it's definitely one of those 2 though.
The 90s times were rad man. So mamy games and consoles to choose from.
Super Nintendo is my personal favorite. It was Nintendo doimg everything they do at its most refined, and had a balance of simplicity and complexity that hits the sweet spot for me in its library. The pixel are and chip tunes of that time have generally aged extremely well, and there are quite a few games to still discover or return to time and again.
Great vid and fun stuff here. I'm a Sega guy to the end, but the fact is the SNES is home to so many classics. Before the Switch arrived on the scene, it was hard to argue that it wasn't Nintendo's best console imo. I still want to pick a SNES up one day. Also, the purple color scheme and convex/concave buttons are still cool.
I was a child of divorce and had both SNES and Genesis. One for mom's and the other for dad's. At the time I prefered the Genesis. It just felt better. NBA Jam, Street Fighter, games like that were not as good on SNES. But now at 40 years old, I think the Library of SNES games makes it the GOAT. All my precious JRPS were SNES
Damn was hoping for some sort of tournament style set of 1v1s where "everyone" put up the best platformer they could and SNES put up the best platformer it could, etc.
I guess I'll rank my top 5 consoles: 1. Playstation 2 especially with it being backwards compatible with the Playstation 1. So, it was 2 consoles in one plus it had great games, it has MANY games that I still haven't played yet; it had a DVD player, and audio player. It was the best value for the money and since I'm saying Playstation 2 it also = Playstation 1. 2. Super Nintendo - For reasons said here 3. Sega Genesis 4. NES 5. Xbox 360.
My top 3 are PS2, SNES, and PS1 in that order
I can find enjoyment in all consoles myself as an avid video game lover and collector. The SNES is definitely a console I boot up often, no doubt. However I have to put my vote in for the PS2 for the greatest of all time (and generally I'm a Nintendo lover). For one I have more of a preference towards 3D games. Secondly the library for the console is so massive that you can find something to love from any genre that strikes your fancy. Lastly the quality of so many games during this period was so high with so much fine tuning of previous installments for many franchises. Anyway that's my little case for the Muhammed Ali of video games.
It’s Friday already?!! 🤯🤯🤯

Sure is!
Your points are pretty much identical to mine for the SNES. It represented sort of the pinnacle of the 2D era of home consoles before the next generation would make the dramatic shift into 3D space. The graphical fidelity possible on the system was a pretty big leap from the 8-bit consoles before it and the sound and music were also greatly improved. It has a large and varied library with an incredible amount of third-party support. It managed to come fairly close to bringing many arcade experiences into the home, particularly with the fighting game craze of the '90s. It also had simple, accessible and reliable hardware with no pointless gimmicks and possibly the best (2D) controller ever made. Obviously, everyone's opinion on a subject like this is going to be influenced by their age and relative experience but however you slice it, the SNES has more than its fair share of reasons to be considered among the best.

Yeah, it just has so much going for it.
Great video!
Yes, people are VERY nostalgic and VERY adamant when explaining how their favorite games (as a kid, but they never mention it) are the best of the best of the best, even today. For me, I have experience with the SNES. It's was fun times. Although, regarding the purple thing, here in Europe we had the Famicom design, which I happen to prefer. Albeit - different exterior, same inside.
I had a super NES as a kid back in 1992. Me and my big brother would play super Mario world, f zero, starfox, super mario kart, super Mario all stars, street fighter 2, Mario paint among others. It was an amazing time to be a kid. It was such a leap from the original NES. We had a sega Genesis too but once i had the super nes it was pretty much all i played. And we even had a sega cd and sega nomad and even the rare sega channel which would let you play new games through your cable company before they even hit stores. So from 92 to 95 it was pretty much super NES all day everyday, especially when donkey kong country and super Metroid came out. I would rate the super nes as one of the best consoles ever made, just under the PlayStation 2 imo. They're both incredible and both have amazing libraries that will last for generations
I am TeamSNES. It is all I had as a kid. I would love to see a "Vs. Everything" video for all the consoles
Although it was my third console, it cemented my love for gaming.
At the peak of the 16bit console war I remember both Mega Drive and SNES were on one level with each having their own unique quirks. However, it was Mortal Kombat 2 to me that showed the technical advantages of the SNES. Even though I was a Sega guy I thought the SNES was cool 😊 But it took me 30+ years to get one, finally 😅

Took me till 1998 to get a Genesis, had an SNES since 91. I wanted more games to play, and eventually led me down the road to collecting for both. Kind of getting harder to do now with the insane prices the games go for.
Besides the nostalgia glasses I have for the system, a big reason I probably loved the SNES console the most had a lot to do with the Sony sound chip in it. A big reason I have such fond memories of the system besides the graphical capabilities comes down to the music nostalgia I have with the games and just how absolutely wonderful they were in combination with the Sony DSP. If it weren't for the sound chip, I think the system wouldn't of had nearly as much quality.
There's one thing that drove me nuts with the SNES and consoles in general from that time until the PS2 era: Region locked games. I remember my uncle in Spain was able to build in a chip for the NES to let me play games from other regions. Especially the Hertz thing, here in Europe or at least in Germany we had only 50 instead of the 60. There have been workarounds playing Ntsc games, e. g. with the Action Replay, but "modding" was something I didn't really knew about. From the design standpoint I prefer the European/Japanese version of the console and the controllers with the red, yellow, blue and green buttons. What still stands out are the magnificent soundtracks the SNES games offered. An answer for my most favorite console is just easy, I love em all, yes, even the Wii U. I mean nowadays they are pieces of history and it is astonishing to see what each generation was capable of due to the technology. BTW. Was that just a meme of that pie or a self made? That one looked really yummy to me.

SNES had an easy fix, clip the tabs out for the chip games, since the next best thing, the Game Genie, won't play them due to the extra cart chip slots. Like the SNES, the Genesis Game Genie also works as a great region bypass.
7:10 There was no problem with the SNES' processor, some programmers just didn't know how to optimize the code enough... Take Gradius 3, for example... A simple code cleaning from a guy named Aendy, managed to get the game rid of almost all of its slowdowns (which, btw, were present in most of the games on ALL platforms - Genesis included). Another aspect that definitely hindered the SNES' capacities were the infamous, cheaper "slowrom" cartridges. On those, the SNES would have to work with like 77% of its processor's speed, which coupled with the previously mentioned not so well coded games, almost always ended on games with slowdown. Good thing that nowadays, there are ppl that optimize the codes and even turn slowrom games into Fastrom ones, just giving the good old SNES a FAIR chance to get rid of this false impression. Nice video, nonetheless... cheers!

Hackers today have gone back and started fixing the mistakes past programmers made for the console, including a music bug fix that removes Street Fighter Alpha 2's load times. The load times were caused by a bug Capcom overlooked during development, and never corrected.
Back then I was a Genesis fan over SNES but now days I love all consoles and there are incredibly great games in all systems.
