Sustain of a hardtail vs the quack of a tremolo bridge on a Strat: one of the deepest questions of life

Thee classic Strat sound is definitely with trem, the springs give a boinky reverb effect, the hardtail is a great sound in itself, more in the tradition of a Telecaster, both sounds are good, but the memorable hit records from the 50's-60's, that had the Strat sound were done with a trem Strat. Johan will get to the bottom of this, as he always does with his excellent videos.

Johngonefishin got to say though I though the hardtail had a way cooler sound but it true that you dont have THE strat sound because of the spring backgroun sound... Im in a dilema now... One sound better but the other sound straty... Seriously I think ill go with the hardtail though, it sound unique

I'm not sure what you mean by funk, but it does seem more chimey. Definitely doesn't kill large portions of the frequency range the way the FR did, but instead kinda shapes the hard tail sound a little differently. With the springs adding a little give, it might actually be inducing some extra harmonic frequencies.

After playing traditional style Strats since 1989 I have been converted to the hardtail since about a year ago. I prefer the more pronounced attack from the hardtail. It definitely has more punch. I really prefer a hardtail these days, even though I still enjoy playing my Trem-equipped Strat. The guitar that changed it all for me? A Squier Bullet hardtail. I now have two, which I upgraded the bridge and tuners. They stay in tune all the time and are super-solid, dependable workhorses. I will probably get more Squier Bullet Hardtails!

Altough tremolo bridge brings some kind of twangines,on the other hand majority of the upper harmonics are simply gone with it, so tone becomes so dull in comparision to hard tail Strat .Altough that might be exactly what one want.Cheers

Great video. Shows what pro players always knew. Would be interesting maybe doing a video of a tremolo strat with a block of premium aged ash wood to stop it from moving (as l have in a couple of my american strats). Before and after blocking the trmolo. This way the tone of the body and neck would not affect the sound being the same. Just an idea. Thanks for a great pro video.

Wow, so they are identical other than the bridge(pickups too)?... I'm so glad you made this video! I played with a Floyd Rose whammy for about a decade and a half, then I got an 8 string, and it didn't have a floating bridge option... I've now played that guitar as my main guitar for 9 years. I really like the sound of my 8 string with a fixed bridge and have gotten quite accustomed to it. I'm about to buy a custom Kiesel 8 string, and I've been going crazy deciding which to get (as they offer both bridge types) I really like my current guitar, and have adapted to the hardtail bridge stylistically over the years, but also love a lot of the sounds you can do with a whammy bar. This definitely gives me something to consider. 😊

I am m glad I saw this video. I have been recently thinking about getting a Stratocaster again. I had one for 30 years and sold it in 2012. So many things I liked about the guitar that I have been missing, but never really loved the wiggly bridge. I have been thinking about assembling a hardtail. These sound samples have convinced me. I don't want the traditional sound as much as I would prefer a hard tail. I cant knock all the success and great sounds so many trem users have had though. But I think I want something a little different.

I have 72 Hardtail Strat and it's one of my favourite guitars. Maybe it's something to do with the pickups which are low output and sweet sounding with plenty of body ( possibly because it's a Hardtail ) but I do believe it's a slightly different sound to a normal Strat which has a more " open " sound, i.e a bit more zing in the treble. Anyway I enjoy both types. Great video and tasteful playing as always Johan.

Careful with comparisons here... All the guitar electronics have significant factory variation, example are the pots have a possible 20% tolerance range and they change the guitar sound, caps have 10%, and pickups themselves are well ... rather largely varying between each. As part of the blocked trem requests getting added, swap loaded pickguards or use the same loaded pickguard in each chassis/condition. Keep up this tone hunt comparisons you have going!:)

The tremolo bridge on the classic Strat is a big part of the Strat sound. It's a solid body guitar but with a different resonant character due to the vibration of the trem system (steel block and springs), I prefer it with the trem even if never used

From my personal experience if you plug in a hardtail and a normal strat afterwards, the hardtail will usually sound better but if you EQ your gear so that the normal strat sounds it's best, it gets you that great stratty tone while that's harder to dial in with the other one, which usually ends up sounding like a Tele.

I always play a hardtail as a blues rock player. The trem is an extra extension but in my comparison hardtail equals more beef on a strat. Great vid sir.

I have 3 modified guitars. les paul standard with bigsby. Stratocaster special in floating vibrato. Flying V.... and they sound more dynamic and expressive this way. Just to mention tremolo is the variation in volume not pitch. So we are talking about vibrato. Nice video. Thanks.

  • @KenTeel
    @KenTeel10 ай бұрын

Just in case you guys actually care about this: It's not a temolo bridge. It's a vibrato bridge. Tremolo is a varying volume level. Vibrato is a varying pitch. A whammy bar varies the pitch by increasing or loosening the tension on strings. Therefore it is a vibrato bridge. This is like what Fender has done with the words "bolt on." There are no bolts in a "bolt on neck" on a Fender. There are wood screws. So, it's not a bolt on, it's a screwed on neck. (I believe that the Taylor acoustic guitars, and the Ovation guitars actually do have bolts.)

Wow nice playing again. Didnt know the trem system actualy make that much background noise. When you hear the hardtail and then the trem one you think "wtf do this strat have a wierd sound?" But there you have it, you can rly hear the springs pretty loud in background which gives the strats classic twangy sound... I dig both though

That’s a huge difference. I’m not sure which I like better. At the moment I’m leaning towards the hardtail. But I feel like the tremolo version sounds more like strat sound I hear in my head when I think of strat tone.

  • @marcelbelanger4424

It's hard to describe tone in words, but I'll say the tremolo gives a looser bouncy open tone that I think gives a Strat its special magic. The less gain you're playing with, the more you can year it. The hardtail sounds tighter, with a quicker attack and more accurate intonation, especially on bends. I put a Tremol-No on my strat-style guitar so I can lock it or let it float depending on what I'm playing. Love your videos, Johan!

Johan, this confirmed my previous experience. So my take away is that hardtails are sligthly better for single note stuff while tremolos are better for strumming and chord stuff. It depends on actual guitar, but I used to use the above mentioned logic when I had both Strat types at the same time, now I use this logic between trem 56’AVRI Strat and 55’ style Telecaster representing hardtail Fender…

That 70s tremolo is a one piece die cast right? My fav strat tremolo when it comes to tone is the vintage reissue with a steel block. That tremolo to me is a big part of the strat sound.Another tremolo I like is an old 2-point American standard with the block saddles and a Callaham block. To me both those strats sounded kinda flat.To my ears they both lacked the sharp edge, the brilliant top you get from a good strat.Perhaps an idea for a future video a comparison of the 70s tremolo and the vintage reissue in that cool brown strat.Anyway....love your videos!

What Id like to know is how much difference the Mazak or cast pot metal bridge they used in the 70's sounds compared to the original steel bridge and block. I'm thinking about changing mine out but not sure if it would make a tonal improvement or not. Anyone know the tonal differences?

Gosh, the difference is surprising. As daft as it sounds, the one with the trem sounds more like a strat, the stop tail ... just sounds awesome. I wonder. The trem block looks to be the 'cheap pot-metal' type. Upgrading this will add more weight to the tone, but it will still be some way off the fatness of the stop tail. As always: This is a great and insightful video. Thanks again :-)

@@GaryDGuitar Yep, the tone suck with a Trem is more because the Trem floats and only comes into contact with the body thru 2 claw screws. HT is a metal plate, flushon solid wood, not a cavern for a bridge hole with cavity for spring & claw hardware. A Bigsby is going to screw into or bolt into a solid block of wood, unless it's on a semi-hollow, where that acoustic effect occurs.

Might sound funny but the hardtail sounds hard and the soft-tail trem sounds soft .... LOL..... But yeah the hardtail is the fuller tone. I had a friend ask me to hard-tail his US strat's 2 pivot trem a few years back . I did it with a nice piece of hardwood wedge in between the trem block and cavity . I found it noticeably did change the tone response and sustain of the guitar..... for the better. I also got rid of the trem spring "boink" sound with some special dampening to the springs. I hate when you hear those springs coming through the amp. Cheers to Johan for another very interesting and well done informative video ! Always good stuff.

Dude think about it like a suspension fork for a bicycle because , in my experience, it softens the notes (the trem, I mean). Its a sweeter softer sound, as opposed to a HARDER sound from a hardtail. BTW I love how YT is recommending 3 year old videos to me from Johan. 2017>2020.

Again, very nice :) The hardtail wins when playing clean and slightly crunched stuff. The Trem-version has more twang to it, but it misses the warmth and full-bodied-tone of the hardtail. I did that comparison myself (i used to have a ´72 with Trem and a buddy of mine had a ´73 hardtail) and the Trem-version sounds better with more Distortion. At least it suits my style of playing more, it has more definition and bite. I have VERY large hands, so i tend to pick very far away from the bridge, thus i need guitars that sound very bright. But im an 80s Hard n Heavy guy, so that does not count for everybody :)

The harddtail sounds more tight and "in your face" while the vibrato has a softer and rounder attack, and an overall more "distant" sound, maybe it's the reverb type sound of the springs resonating?

No surprise. Hardtail has more bass, more of the wood quality. Trem has more of a "steely" sound. Less bass and mids (therefore brighter), more "ringing" in the highs. Since the trem by design is less connected to the wood, it shouldn't be a surprise that some of the qualities of the wood drop out. But its not a world of difference, and why would it be. The bridge is only one of the many components involved. Great demo, well done. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to opine.

Is the term floating or is it to the body. I can hear a difference. Not sure if it just me but I can hear the springs taking up some of the tone. For me I like that. The hardtail sounds a bit stronger in the low end with better overall resonance, while the tremolo sounds more jangly. The do sound very similar though. I prefer the hardtail though, which makes some sense because many artists that I like that use strats block off the tremolo.
