Is the Sound Blaster FX V2 the new budget king?

Ғылым және технология

If you look at the range of internal sound cards that Creative has on offer, you will find the Z SE, which will set you back €100 and the AE-5 for €160. So with a pricing €55 makes this truly a budget card.
My current budget king is an Asus card, the Xonar AE. A great card, which is well priced and has some excellent components, like the ESS Sabre dac and a swappable opamp! So when Creative released this budget card, I just had to have it and put it through all the tests. Is it better than the Xonar AE? Let’s find out.

    Hi Anton. I bought FX V2 just recently. This is my first audio card and I had been choosing between Asus and Creative. I chose creative because I remembered it to be the audio king in my youth back in 90s. But the worm of doubd stuck in me since I read somewhere that Asus was the way better choice. Thanks for your testing/opinion. The sound this Creative card provides is way better that I expected compared to my built-in audio. So I'm very happy with my purchase. It's definitely worth it's 50 bucks.

    Hi Anton, I bought this card after I saw your review and I have to say I am amazed with the sound quality it delivers even though it's based on Relatek chip. It made my obsolete Logitech X-530 5.1 speakers a bomb once again. Reasons I chose this one over the Asus Xonar AE are it's more up to date, doesn't use USB interface (lower FPS) and Creative finally updated drivers and controller programs for it's hardware which actually feel really nice to use now. Thank you very much, you got my subscribe since the first video I saw on your channel, great work!

    Thank you Filip! I was also very, very surpised by the quality of this sound card! I was preparing for a "another s**t card" video, but no! I understand that you choose this one over the Xonar AE. I love the fact that you can change the opamp, but I also understand the usb interface issue. Have you seen my video about that? kzread.info/dash/bejne/k3qtm8yTqqe5nrw.html

    @@AntonsHardware changing the opamp is a great thing, I learned about it after my Audigx FX V2 arrived :D But still I wouldn't change this one because even a gain of few FPS is relevant in these times when GPUs are ridiculously overpriced. Thanks for the link, I saw this video few weeks back and gave it thumbs up. Your channel is really useful and I learned a great deal from it. Keep up the good work!

    Good question. Very good question. In some rare cases you could use the stereo better than the headphone jack. The reason for that is that the amplifier for the headphone is either rubbish or is broken (like on some second hand cards). The difference is minute and if you don't hear any difference yourself, use the headphone.

    Just got one of these for a HP G4 600 SFF because the onboard audio is quite bad on it. It has only two PCIe slots, one x4 and a x16. I was planning to put a RX6400 GPU in the x16 slot and the Audigy in the x4 slot but it just does not work properly in that slot. Crackling dying sound no matter what I do. Works fine in the x16 slot and in another computer's x1 PCIe slot however. So probably it is the damn HP' s fault.

    I haven't purchased this sound card yet, but could you tell me if this card, other than with the graphic equaliser, has seperate bass and treble controls in the driver interface/software? I recently asked tech support at Creative and they said that apart from adjusting the bass, there's no way to adjust treble in the driver interface, which I think is absurd. I'm not sure if the guy knows what he's talking about. I've been using Creative Labs sound cards since the late 90s, and they always have bass and treble controls in the driver interface. The only one exception which I found out was with the drivers for the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 for Windows 10, which still does not make any sense. No bass or treble controls and even no graphic equaliser. Maybe this was something to do with the age of the card and Windows 10 compatibility. I'd appreciate if you could poke around in the driver UI and see if they've included bass/treble controls in the setting. If I can help it, I don't want to have to adjust EQ settings anywhere other than my iTunes app. Thanks.

    Hey. I have an MSI PRO Z690-A board in my PC and the integrated sound on the board is Realtek ALC897. The Fosi Audio BT30D Pro amplifier is flying to me. Is there any point in buying Creative Labs Sound blaster audigy fx (v2) = Realtek ALC1220. Is it enough for me only amplifier connected to MSI PRO Z690-A board with Realtek ALC897 ? Ps. • @AntonsHardware

    @AntonsHardware

    The ALC897 isn't the best of the best, but it gets the job done. Putting an amp after that may improve audio somewhat, especially if your headset is a bit more demanding. But here the principle "Rubbish in, rubbish out" also applies. So if the source isn't that good, the amp can't improve too much. Not sure if the ALC1220 is even an improvement over your onboard. But I did like the FX v2 a lot!

    My computer has an onboard ALC 4050H which isn’t too terrible except for the Realtek driver which is designed to go into low power state after 10 seconds… causing an annoying speaker pop. I’m using the FX V2 and it makes a left channel speaker pop during startup. I avoid this “noise” by using S/PDIF output my computer speakers do support.

  • @AntonsHardware

    @@AntonsHardware I’m not sure what the cause is… my computer is an Lenovo with the Realtek ALC 4050H which is a very basic codec. The issue I’m having with it is the driver’s low power states… it activates after 10 seconds of audio silence and the speakers will “pop.” This low power state might be okay with “unpowered” speakers with no amplifier involved. Idk. I also have an old SB Recon3D Fatal1ty which runs absolutely quiet at all time… the software is outdated and doesn’t like Windows 11, but it runs absolutely quiet.

    To say it simply, yes, the sound is generated by the processor. The DSP is more about the effects after that, like bass, reverb etc. A sound card really doesn't do that much anymore, unlike what it did 2 decades ago. The difference nowadays is in the DAC and the amplifier that is used. And that is very good for the price of this card!
