Is The Red Komodo Better Than The BMPCC 6K Pro

Ойын-сауық

I've been a huge fan of the BMPCC 6K Pro for awhile now and just recently purchased the Red Komodo. I'm curious to see if I am able to get the same look from each camera and if anyone can really tell a difference. Today I find out!

Watching this I honestly thought Cam A was the Komodo, it just looked more pleasing to the eye and to find out that it’s the 6k Pro just goes to show how great of an image it produces and a lot of money could be saved by just staying with the Pro over the Komodo.

I guessed correct. I'm a Canon guy but I always thought Black Magic had a "thing" about it. Almost bought that 12k camera when the price dropped. If BM builds a nice box camera and addresses all the short comings you talked about here... could be something special.

I own BMPCC6K Pro and I am all-in Black Magic post-production pipeline. That's where BM cameras and workflow shines. I truly believe whatever brand or "team" you choose the more you can lean towards one dedicated brand more you find benefits and the overall workflow seems solid and faster. In the shot with the fridge the Komodo highlights seem less pleasing to the eye. Are you using any highlight saving on either? Also, form my experience with Sony I feel that when I look at Komodo footage it seem to have better shadow contrast. I feel like Sony shooters tend to lift the blacks to negate whatever is going on in the dark parts of the image. Are you doing any of this with the BMPC and do you feel that the Komodo solves some of this issue?

  • @danielwcunningham

I agree sony shooters (myself) lift the blacks a lot. I definitely still have a habit of doing that! I like the contrast and range of the Komodo, they have very clean blacks and the rolloff is amazing. I enjoy working with R3D footage more than braw that's for sure!

Thanks for your test and time, it has been really helpful to me. On the third test (espresso machine), the split screen crops are mislabeled. When you put them side by side, the "Cam A" shot is identical to the one previously labeled as "Cam B" when presented alone... and vice versa. The perspective, contrast, sharpness and color of the "Cam B" (when doing the split screen comparison) corresponds to the "Cam A" instead. I put them inside resolve to make sure before posting... Anyways great video!

Loved the images from camera A the whole way through! The Komodo has a bit of a muddy appearance and the color detail is less. In the last shot where she's leaning against the wall, you can see how the Blackmagic is picking up all of the various tints and shades of green on the wall, while the Komodo is picking up less.

It was a good quiz. I could tell the difference between the cameras just by amount of noise it has. I have an experience working with BMPCC 6k and I did a bunch of shooting with this camera, and color graded as well. Whereas, I never saw the Komodo footage before. In some "rounds" it was quite hard to tell a difference! I like the video and hope to see more from you.

You know about the screen calibration on the P6K, right?

  • @pastamatt
    @pastamatt10 ай бұрын

Color and detail-wise, I think they seemed pretty equal to me... it went back and forth from shot to shot depending on the nuances of your grading for each shot. I couldn't tell which camera was which from that perspective. They are very equal image-wise. I ended up guessing that B was the Komodo just because I know it's sensor size is slightly bigger and the field of view on each scene was a little bit wider. Even though I imagine you were just moving by feel and instinct, the Pocket still caused you to shoot a little tighter.... which I actually kind of liked. So, if one was to choose based on that, it would depend what lenses one had and whether someone was always trying to get closer or back up with them. This may not weigh in on a decision as much as the other aspects you mentioned. (Also, the hue/tint of the pocket screen is easily fixed with the calibration menu.)

I got my guess right with A cam being the BMPCC 6k Pro and B cam being the Red but I only guessed that off the first shot selection. For most of the rest of the shots, it was a struggle to tell. Just really the first one and the second to last one were obvious to me. I've always felt that the BMPCCs had a yellow tint or fade over their footage. And so that was what I was looking for to be able to tell the difference.

I noticed the difference right away. That said, the price of the Pocket Cam is way more attractive. haha I think if I were to ever upgrade I'd get the Komodo, but it's also one of those things where the pocket camera is more versatile so would the Komodo fit all my needs in terms of what I want it to do or how I plan on using it? I did excellent! You did a great job with color correction, they both look identical. I probably got all the scenes correct because I own a Blackmagic pocket 6K.. .. I had my eyes on the red komodo, but I'm not sure now. Probably I will invest on the Blackmagic 12K since is Netflix approved.

Def notice the Green hue. But its something that im used to seeing now with my own work... Great video, Great Channel.

the first shot i was in doubt , but in the second, shot, made it clear that the camera b was the komodo, it has a different look, kinda sharper and more defined in a way , not sure how to explain, while the 6k pro is a little softer and kinda different in the shadows as well. Funny enough, in the fridge shot, the 6k pro seems to have a better DR, while overall, the red has a certain 'refinement' to it, i like it !

How are you only getting 15-20 minutes of battery life on the 6K Pro? The Blackmagic batteries are 3500mAh and I easily get over an hour on them (typically about 1 hour 7 minutes). That's not much worse than typical hybrid cameras. I could understand being frustrated with 15-20 minutes for sure, but the Blackmagic batteries are very reasonably priced and do great! I also never turn the brightness on my screen above like 30% which is probably a big help for battery life too. If I'm indoors I find that 10%-15% is bright enough and even in direct sunlight outside I wouldn't need to go above 50%.

@@danielwcunningham also have you calibrated your screen? Out of the box the initial 6K Pros had terrible monitor color with that blue/green tint and then they came out with the new camera firmware that allowed users to calibrate the screen. It’s not perfect but I just eyeballed some footage back and forth on the P6K and a trusted monitor and dialed in the screen calibration til I was happy with it and now it matches up great!

I totally agree, I also have the Pocket 6k Pro and used the Canon R6 for gimbal shots because it was so hard to balance it on the gimbal (Dji RS2). But I wasn't happy with the quality of the Canon R6 compared to Pocket (and I was also worry about the overheating issue), so I bought a Sony FX3 + FX6 to replace them. A big investment for me, I was so happy at first, because it was so easy for run'n'gun projects, I used the FX6 for all the handheld and tripod shots and the FX3 for the gimbal and as a B cam for interviews. But after a while I was really missing the image quality of the Pocket 6k pro (I still haven't sold it because of that). Even if I think, the Sony's are the perfect combo for fast pace projects and for an optimal workflow, there is something I started to really dislike about them, and it's the Sony "look". For my taste it really looks too digital, like it add artificial sharpness and it lacks of true details (texture). The image quality is great in a sense (it's very clean) but it's definitely not the look I'm looking for. This is why I started to think, perhaps I should sell the Pocket 6k pro and the FX6 and buy a Red Komodo (and keep the FX3 as a B cam or for run'n'gun shoots). Damn, I wish Blackmagic had a Cube design for their Pocket line 😅

On the 6k pro you can just calibrate the monitor in the camera. Also those batteries for the 6k pro aren't the right voltage. Best to stick with those authentic batteries and you'll get close to an hour recording in raw. The third party NPF's don't offer the right voltage.

There is so much confusing discussion on the matter. ScottBalkum has the best video on it.

I picked it right everytime, due to BM's Braw. I actually advocated for them to do such a codec, as a cheap way to go pro But, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. I identified fault early, which was corrected, but wished for a yet higher data rate mode again, for extra detail. The braw smoothed over the picture quality. Which is the finer levels and details the levels reveal (skin detail). I advised on number of techniques, and processing image quality. The Komodo is more realistic and seems to preserve a bit more. It's the authentic data you start with in grading. Jim will probably be surprised at my support to Red. The extra colour in the 6k pro seems to squashes out some of the colour detail. It's not that the Komodo picture as presented either. You want a bit extra in the 6k from extra data, and more of the detail in the coloured areas. People respond more to contrast, and this will preserve extra contrast in the skin details (I didn't check yj hair and clothing). So, I wonder if you can push the Komodo footage a bit more (are they 14 bit pads, where BM uses 12 bit, and I have advocated they need 14-16 bit more. This gives you a little bit more movement to grade, and means you need to be more careful with 12 bits in a codec like Braw). Now, it depends on what you are trying to do, KZread webcam like footage, will even benefit from this, but you are not getting paid to go the extra 2 miles. However, a really high class job, is about how enjoyable the image is. No, braw 12 bits is not such a bad thing, but you need to be more careful to keep the joy. Now, I post up a guide a few decades ago on how to break down image quality (which to sacrifice first to give more data to what to preserve, in compression. Leading to a jump in picture quality for the data rate). I did a few enhancements, and then a lot of enhancements to the list to advise Braw. As I am pretty sure I've says in the past, it would be handy to have menu adjustments about how much preference to some of the items in the list, and ability to save looks. They should enable this in menus for most parts of the list, with savable looks. If you are filming with scenery and wind, you want a certain CODEC LOOK, versus an inside close-up scene with talking heads, or with multi coloured patterned wall paper (say gold leaf on velvet red with some orange or green highlights etc etc). You could simply select scene mode that better rendered that. The operator being able to test and save scene life's as they like. Adjusting with dials or sliders etc. Using this sort of ability with luts, you might even be able to use this to grade as you film (a challenge) but you can at least preserve what you want better for a grade, and closer to it. But, of course, if you blow a scene, you got less to recover it will. Anyway, I noticed the sparse colour pattern on the 12k you should also look into.

I got an impression that BMCC6k pro shots had lots of IR pollution and therefore blacks looked very mushy. Did you use same NDs for both cameras? I didn't really like that skintones lean heavily towards red on BM, maybe that's because I like how ARRI cameras render them more towards cooler green tone.

The CRT-Atari shot gave it away hands down (every now and then a flash split the frame on the BMCC) ... But the motion and that global shutter is really what makes the Komodo. If someone just posts stills, I rarely can pick out the Komodo, but even a little bit of motion I can *usually* get blind tests if the clip is long enough. Global shutters have a certain feel, even the highest refresh rates rolling shutters are not the same.
