Is The Purple Tomato Worth the Hype? My Growing and Tasting Review

This video is my review of the world's first purple tomato inside and out, simply called The Purple Tomato. This is a GMO tomato cultivar bred by Norfolk by taking genes from a purple snapdragon flower, and inserting them into a tomato. This video is my experience growing this tomato, including how I grew it from seed, how it compres with regular heirloom tomatoes, and finally what it tastes like.

I, too, was curious. I ordered the seeds. Planted 3. All three came up, but l lost one almost immediately to damping off. Planted the others out later than I normally do because of weather and other issues. Everything was wonderful until we had horrible hail storms. The plants are growing again but we have hit the time when daily highs are in 90s. I don't think I'll have any produce until fall. Just hoping I can keep plants alive until then. (TX zone 8a)

5:57 For the color of tomato, the possible reason for such change in the color is soil pH. Anthocyanins highly reactive to pH range just like the famous hydrangeas, pink in acidic soil and blue in high pH. So, I recommend checking the soil pH. Thanks

Yeah I wrote this before I finished the video when she explained it. I was surprised that was the only reason. I would be more concerned with copywrited gmo dna making it into the dna of other seeds that I plan on selling. Imagine if I sold a ton of seeds to a farm that could then get sued for plant infringement. I would feel horrible and would possibly also be liable.

I'm in Georgia and bought a pack of these. I germinated 6 under a fluorescent grow light and they did well until I put them in the ground. 5 out of the 6 lost their leaves and disintegrated. I saved the other half of my seeds in case this happened. I re-germinated under a new LED grow light purchased from Tractor Supply after my old one stopped working and these are really thick beefy plants! My one surviving plant from the first planting is thick-stemmed and finally producing flowers but all the rain has definitely delayed fruiting. My plant looks different from yours. The leaves are quite big and no flowers are forming until about 5 feet up. Below that is all foliage. I have had to tie the plant about every 6 inches to keep the stem from crimping when the weight makes it fall over. It has outgrown its stake now at around 6 or 6.5 feet and I'm trying to figure out how to train it so that the stem won't break. Since the tomato is indeterminate and I'm not sure flowers will branch off lower down I really don't want to top it. I may have it lead to another stake close-by and train it downward or construct another interior cage with several tiers to support it. Now that the rain has stopped and the air is starting to cool down a bit my other tomatoes are flowering as well. Like you, I am keeping the purple ones isolated from the other varieties, but my goal is to create a slicer purple tomato, with a more compact vine. I will have to look into which heirloom would be best to cross it with. Not sure why they started with a cherry tomato rather than a slicer or at least something with more meat in it. Cherry tomatoes seem to have alot of gel so you don't get much to eat in each one. I am thrilled to hear that it is really good tasting! Once I get fruit I'll be saving the seeds for sure, as I would rather not have to spend $20.00 for a little pack of seeds every year. I agree with you that it would ultimately be better if the manufacturer didn't patent these so that more people could create other varieties from them and market them. I think the trade-off would be worth it to them because they could collect alot more data faster than if they just did their own research. Commercial growers could use their own money to see how new spin-off varieties do in a large market setting and see how different crosses perform, and more buyers would benefit health-wise.

Update: mine finally ripened a few days ago. They have more of a floral and sweet taste if you leave on the vine an extra day. Tried one soon as it seems ripe, checking the shoulders like you said in one of your videos (which works great on my other tomatoes), I think the ripening process continues after the shoulders are soft, because the first one I tried was kind of, well like a store bought tomato, underwhelming in other words. Left some ripe ones on the vine a day longer and they tasted a lot more complex and delicious.

I’ve been growing these since March. I’m in NW Florida. They are growing great and like you I’ve had some spot but all in all they are doing very well. I’ve been harvesting and find the taste just ok. My favorite tasting tomatoes are Brandywine Pink and Aunt Ruby German Green so I like the acidity. These had none. Mine when ripe are almost black and beautiful inside. I’m already saving seed and giving to friends to grow and eat. I like you wanted to grow because of the nutrients and was just curious about they would taste. The GMO part didn’t really bother me. It was just a flower they modified it with. Anything that has more cancer fighting nutrients was a win for me. Thanks for sharing your experience so thoroughly. Happy gardening!

One thing I've noticed is the roots are purple too! I'm growing the plants in hydroponic kratky style buckets, and straw bales because the soil sucks here. They seem to really like hydroponics, doing better than any of the other tomatoes. One thing I'm curious about is the breed that was edited to make the Norfolk Purple, it must of been an heirloom. @@ewok7075 So they were dark when i picked them. Infact they pretty much just fell of when i touched them. Then i let them sit in the widow sill for another 3 weeks just cause i had so many other tomatoes to eat from my other normal plants. Also what your saying about letting them sit on the vine has been debunked by several other gardeners i follow and my own experience. ill use the red tomatoes for example cause its easier to see their changes. Basically once they are mostly red, not fully red the stem seals up and no longer get nutrients and sugars. You can tell cause when you tug at them they just come right off. If you have to fight with them then they are not done, but they do not have to be fully dark red before you pick them. You are just asking for crop loss due to pests or birds or disease. But anyway, I have a ton of regular tomatoes so i didnt pick the purple ones till they had rippened on the vine, and I still let them sit after picking them, cause again, i have a ton of tomatoes to eat, and even after all that, still not sweet.

Hybrid plants have to be crossed pollinated by hand, usually outsourced to third world countries where child labor is the norm. All hybrid plants/seeds are a no go for me once I learned that, I don’t want to contribute to forced labor just for “better” plants.

I understand. I grow basically just heirlooms because I like to save my own seed and I do find quite a few out perform hybrids anyways.

These are not hybridized; the gene comes from snapdragons.

Im all in favor of higher nutrition GMOs. If you want to sell some "dehydrated tomatoes". Let me know, id probably pay $5 plus shipping for 1 tomato sliced very thinly packed into a standard envelope.
