    I am a Christian former Republican who wants desperately to close the wealth gap created by the rich and powerful greed and destruction of the middle and lower class. I want freedom to be, not freedom to abuse. People are all the same in that there are things we NEED to have a good quality of life. I want to see the needs of people met with sustainability to have clean water and environment unpoisoned by chemicals; to stop exacerbating climate change. We NEED 1. Universal Healthcare 2. Free childcare for working families or families who desire more educational training to lift themselves out of poverty. 3. Free Higher education for college and technical schools to promote a more educated electorate. 4. Food security free from corporate greed. 5. Affordible housing. Stopping large purchases of homes that are then sold or rented at much higher prices preventing first time homeowners. 6. I also want to care for our elderly, our sick, our veterans, our homeless, and those who are societal outcasts. BUT i don't know what to do or who to trust to do it. I absolutely believe in freedom of and from religion to leave religious affiliation out of the hands of government lawmakers to prevent a theological agenda. Where do I fit in? I don't know.

    You are not the only one feeling lonely politically. Most of us who haven't joined a cult (MAGA on the right, woke on the left) feel insecure in their thoughts. But being an independent thinker is a very lonely place, you get used to it after a while. I stopped voting for somebody who promises an ideal solution - those are dangerous demagogues, because there are no simple solutions. I usually vote for those who would do less harm and maybe something good. Stay strong in your faith, it is your anchor!

    @diannabryzicki7111 You fit in with me. We share very similar goals. I’m a left-leaning independent who volunteered for Bernie and I want common sense policies that would help people have better lives. As I see it, right now, the Republican Party has gone off the rails toward an authoritarian theocracy and more corporate control with the threat of Project 2025. I think we have to unseat enough of them to force the party to change direction. For the most part, this means voting for Democrats, certainly in the presidential race. Fortunately Biden has moved away from some of the bad neoliberal policy of the past four or so decades and is pursuing policy that helps people. We need to encourage that. We can also work for things like getting ranked choice voting and eliminating the electoral college which would open more possibilities. There’s a lot to do, but I think we can get to a better place in our politics.

    Mr. Torres does little to bridge the gap of the fractured left in this interview. He states that the Democratic party is more progressive than it's ever been. But that's really only true for social issues. I contend that global society is more progressive on social issues than it's ever been and therefore it's difficult for me to give credit to the American Democratic party in it's current form for being oh so progressive. He completely avoids talking about any economic policy and goes on to say that his biggest criticism of progressives is the defund the police movement.... Has that even been uttered in the last year by a hard line progressive? I follow a lot of people Mr. Torres appears to have disdain for and none of them really have that in their sights at the moment. If Democrats want to call themselves the big tent party, they have a funny way of showing it. Calling the left wing of the party "college educated elites" isn't going to inspire camaraderie. I want medicare for all, climate action, and quality free public education. Yeah, sure I'm a real snob. If Mr. Torres wants to help with mental health, medicare for all seems like a pretty good start.

    I'd like a serious expansion of mental healthcare in our educational system, with routine lessons to recognize signs and symptoms of disorders, accompanied with remedies that have been scientifically proven to address mental health issues with an onsite clinical psychologist. An effort like this would transform our school system to become an environment where young people would actually enjoy learning.

    Defunding the police- terrible slogan. What the progressive left wants is for the police funding to be diverted to other public safety measures within the law enforcement realm. We want them to put more money towards crisis intervention, toward mental health and dcfs, more funding for human needs and disperse the funds properly. Instead of the money going towards more weapons and more jail, we want funding to also go to conflict management and humane and effective methods.

    @@johnsnow661 Congressman Torres is not a representative of Israel. He's a Democrat from NY 16 in the Bronx. But the very fact that he talks and feels like an Israeli member of the Knesset should give pause to anyone. Why does he so ferociously argue right-wing Israeli talking points? Why does he continue to ignore the genocide being committed in Gaza with American taxpayer money? Why does he slander activists who want to stop the genocide as anti-semites? He claims to be a progressive and to fight for Medicare for All, but he is 100% on the side of AIPAC, which consistently opposes Democrats who fight for M4A. Israel has universal health care for its citizens, but we Americans don't. But it's us U.S. taxpayers who supply Israel with more foreign aid money than any other country on the planet. And for what? So we can fund a genocide and a powerful foreign lobby that supports MAGA insurrectionists and candidates who fight to keep us from getting our own universal health care? This is outrageous.

    "If we know that the majority of the latino community either identifies as latino or hispanic, then why has latinx become the default term" This is an absolutely horrible argument. As a progressive, you can't always just refer to the majority view, many progressive ideas, most of them even, were very unpopular, until progressives fought to make them more popular. I personally don't care much for the "latinx" term, but the argument being made against it here is absolutely horrible, and it's not the only time that Torres makes this kind of lazy appeal to the majority view in order to argue against progressive ideas. Resigning yourself to whatever happens to be the majority view is the opposite of what a progressive should do, it's a very conservative way of thinking that leads to a huge status quo bias.

    Regarding the 'progressive' left's obsession with 'politically correct' language, and as Stephen Fry (British, left-leaning actor and writer) has said, it neither fights your political corner nor persuades. Instead it’s a depoliticizing approach that just isn’t practical politics. Trying to limit the way that people use language - and to tell them what words and attitudes are acceptable, to try and force conformity, and to throw at them lots of jargon-phrases like ‘hetero-normative’ or ‘cisgender’ (etc etc) - just doesn’t change things. Moreover, it tends to kill the ability to - as Oscar Wilde put it - “play gracefully with ideas”.

  • @bevtaylor5466

    It’s a mistake to characterize progressives as obsessed with political language and such. The progressive movement is much more about universal single payer healthcare, affordable education and reining in climate change, among other practical issues.

  • @kagutsuchi969

    @kagutsuchi969

    13 күн бұрын

    @richardoldfield6714 Language and how we use it, matters. The issue specifically as it relates to “politically correct” is that the people who are the targets or those words and attitudes are minorities who the majority don’t identify with nor care about. For them being called a slur doesn’t technically attack their actual identity. It’s just an annoyance. Whereas for the people who those words are genuinely directed towards, they are being attacked for their identity, and as such are going to react negatively. So when people in the 90s used to call each £ag, sure the straight kids ended up feeling bad about having their identity associated with a group society saw negatively, but they weren’t the people being branded as a danger and detriment to society. That was the little isolated gay kids who hanged themselves. So do we protect them or tip toe around the bigoted attitudes that shun and isolate them, for the sake of people whose lives aren’t being affected by it?

  • @bevtaylor5466

    @bevtaylor5466

    @richardoldfield6714 For myself, I’ll use any pronouns or name that anyone prefers. It’s called polite, and you don’t have to be progressive, just a thoughtful person who understands reality. Reality is that there are more than two genders. Some people are born with both X and Y, even with both male and female parts. And trans is rare, but a friend with a trans nephew says they always knew from childhood. I‘m guessing that if they don’t alter the body and then skip the hormones too much, it would be possible for someone who identifies as and looks very male to end up pregnant and give birth. Why not recognize this?

    If systemic racism can be seen in how minority groups are treated by police, schools, hospitals, real estate agents, etc why would those programs be any different in how they’d be applied to minorities? The G.I bill was a great idea, to help vets get an education or buy homes without paying too much, as reward for their service. Terrific, until you remember that black people didn’t benefit from it. Take some time to study up on systemic bigotry, because it’s actually the reason we can’t have those social programs. By framing the oppression of minority groups as simply them being victims of their own biology making them unable to rise above poverty has made it impossible to put those programs in place. Just look at any discussion of those programs, and I guarantee the comments will be filled with people pointing out minorities abusing systems like wick or snap or food stamps and it’s never about just the poor or never includes poor white people, it’s generally very pointed criticisms at black people and illegal immigrants being the reason these programs don’t work.
