I have it and my experience has been awesome. I can play games while my wife watches trash reality TV, and it works flawlessly in my house. My PS5 is hard wired and I have a high end router that I bought maybe 6 years ago. I don't really care about playing remotely outside the house. It lets me lay in bed or on the couch playing my PS5 when it otherwise may not be an option.
Another example of why not to pre-order and wait until honest reviewers like you take a look at hardware and games.

Hey Ron, sometimes routers will try and optimize traffic with QOS settings. I’m going to assume that the reason it worked the next day much better was because the leases on the device registrations in your home that took priority expired (like maybe your smart tv or something). The next day the Portal was probably bumped up in priority over something you wouldn’t notice as much. Dunno for sure, but I had this experience when I bought a new laptop recently and doing a hard reset of my network did wonders.

If your PS5 or Portal is downloading an update or patch in the background that will also affect the stream. Sometimes you won’t even notice background downloading until it stutters. I think there’s an option to turn it off on the PS5
I’m looking forward to getting one some day. As someone who has a family and little control of the tv at times, this sounds awesome to play when they are watching something else. @lazarushernandez5827
7 ай бұрын
The caveat there is the network connections. Your PS5 is going stream best with a wired connection. You'll likely have access to a wired connection at families house, not so sure you will at a hotel. You would be able to tether the PS Portal to say your phones hotspot and leave your wired PS5 at home on standby/rest mode; this worked with the Vita and PS4, but you will get input lag and sometimes picture degradation.
@JohnDoe-zg6fn
7 ай бұрын
Leave your console at home connected to either wifi or hard wired and leave it on sleep mode. When you connect your portal connect to the wifi you are using then connect it to your ps5. It will take a minute to wake up your ps5 and then it will connect. I have tried it on three different network access points. My home network my phones hot spot and my netgear Nighthawk m6 pro and it connected to all of them with zero issues and ran great.

This is essentially a glorified Wii U gamepad for the PS5.
If you're connecting both your PS5 and Portal over wifi, try connecting your PS5 on the 2.4ghz band and your Portal over 5ghz. I don't own a portal myself but I use remote play a lot and I find it helps running your two devices on different bands. Also helps a lot to have modern wifi in your house, but it's not required, most dual-band AC routers will be fine. Your internet speed doesn't matter unless you're playing outside your home, this is a common misconception with remote play, it connects directly to your PS5, so on a local network, it doesn't need to go outside your local home network, so your internet speed is irrelevant. It's just a bit more temperamental when you're running both your PS5 and remote play device on wireless, it is actually recommended to connect the PS5 via ethernet cable if possible.
It has made it to Where you take a extended break... Such as cook more food on the grill and hang out on the patio or a longer smoke break or When you go camping and you have your t-mobile box With you and it works great if u have 5g so far... Or if you're just wanting to get away from sitting at a desk and tv like my ps5 sits.. I hate the headphone swindle
Expect negatively you will get negatively.
I am just curious as to why many people are unaware that they can use the PS5 DualSense controller to connect with any other device that supports the remote play app. Spending $200 on an iPad and using the PS5 DualSense controller to connect and play games remotely can give you a better gaming experience and be a good investment.
I got to admit, I'm happy with my Logitech G cloud. I use it to connect to my Xbox remotely, it's got all the emulators and all that and it has Android games too. At first it wouldn't connect to the TV but they just recently sent out a firmware update and now you can connect to the screen with USBC

You know, I could play my Wii-U on a separate floor in my house from the base unit with zero issues, and I REALLY have a lot of radio frequency noise in my house. :D That was a flawless experience. I do a lot of remote playing in my house through Steam, but mostly through a wired network with fiber backbone between floors, so I'm a bit picky. Yeah, while the Wii U wasn't a huge success, as someone who has one, the remote play worked very well. But that also sent a signal directly between the console and gamepad. The signal between them wasn't going over wifi. What is ridiculous about the PS Portal is that wifi is the ONLY option to send the signal through. I understand having that as an option when someone won't be in range of the system. But it is ridiculous that there is no option to do a direct link between them and have the signal go directly between the PS5 and the Portal without wifi being needed for that particular function. Though I would be skeptical even if it did have that option. The PS Vita had the option to be connected to the PS4 for remote play both over wifi and directly to the console... and it was a crap shoot either way. Once in a while it would work fine, but more often than not it was unplayable. Even when I had a direct link between the two devices and I was purposely holding the Vita right next to the PS4.

I appreciate it, I always gotta be honest no matter if its something I bought or something sent for review. I just tell it like it is. Sometimes our experiences may be different or I like something others don't or the opposite... Its always whatever I am thinking at the time I do a video testing something, reviewing it or just playing a game with no agenda other than sharing my thoughts in a video. Just talkin like I would to a friend in real life.
Remote Play works REALLY REALLY REALLY good in my house. Will those work as good as that? Like I'll just be luckier than the complainers??
If your router has mimu or beamforming that could be causing your issues
I’m looking forward to the videos where people show stick drift
I would get one but I've never had good experiences with remote play. Id love to play in my room at night but it never worked on Vita or PS4 in bedroom.

What was your network setup? I setup a powerline adapter and it works great. The PS4 usually worked better when it was a wired connection, especially if the console is in another room. Another option is the Vita TV, it also can do remote play but includes an ethernet port to go wired.
The reality is, remote play isn’t ready for mass acceptance. It’s not consistently good regardless of your remote device. The portal is fine at what it does but the problem is the entire remote play setup. Unfortunately the portal does nothing to improve the connectivity. I’m getting the same result as my Ally and Steamdeck.

Well put, I'm actually really surprised people are still learning this considering how long remote plays been around
great & honest review - how is this vs. Steam Deck / ROG Ally =-? or are they even comparable =-?

Not comparable. The 2 devices you mentioned are standalone portable PCs. This is a glorified tablet stripped down feature wise sandwiched between a PS5 controller.

@@JAEEIGHTY thank you for the information
Thank you so much for showing mk1 gameplay but can you test online matches on mk1 please!
Works fine for me but I have low traffic on wi fi
When I first started using this device I said the same thing it’s trash the quality was bad. Then I figured it out if the PS5 is downloading an update or a game it hurts the performance so before you start gaming just pause this updates. Once I did that the experience was good.
A device that relies on your internet connection yielding mixed results…. nobody saw this coming. My take is that if you’re on the fence you should try it. If your connection isn’t up to snuff, you’ll know within the 14 day return period. It’s also a real stress test for internet connectivity, as it’s the most demanding consumer product for internet related tasks. If anything, it will let you know if your connection is truly as great as you think it is.
Maybe the time of day was the difference in the performance. There could be slightly more latency when the ISP is more crowded at night (even if you get a similar speed).

It uses the local network, not internet. It can use Internet if you can login away from your house.

If you have DSL you have your own direct connection no up or down times.
Looks like I'll put the cash I had set aside for this towards the PS VR2. Thanks for saving me $200!
My children are not going to have any use for it, during the long car drive this holiday
I love it. I didn't listen to other people. As a matter of fact I bought do to all the hate it received. It's worth the money. I haven't had any issues with it at all. In my opinion it can only get better with updates.

Exactly right!. Love mine too it's awesome.
You need to make sure the system isn't downloading any updates or games while using makes it lag bad and the resolution is horrible
After trying Remote Play on Vita I knew it was crap. And here Sony is, trying to sell the same junk, but as the MAIN feature.
I don't know about the PlayStation portal, but that thumbnail is straight fire LO.L
Didn't the Wii U do the exact same thing in 2012?
The PS5 needs to have a wired connection. This will help a lot. The second issue is the official remote play app is not great. There is a 3rd party remote play app that is way better in every way. I use it on the Logitech G cloud and it’s so close to feeling native. Until the official app gets fixed they are going to have issues selling this device.

What’s the third party app?

PSPlay on Android and I believe the developer had to rename it to MirrorPlay on iOS. Cost about $6 for the app. He makes one for Xbox as well that I also feel is superior to the official app. Unfortunately with the Portal your stuck with the official app because it doesn’t function as an Android tablet like the Logitech G cloud.
Seeing a lot of impulse buys on this too and people trying to scalp it. If you want it, just be patient. Don’t pay resell to scalpers. It’s not a need and when scalpers realize they can’t sell it, lowball and grab for under retail
Nobody mentions it, but if you’re playing the portal at home you can use the original ps5 pulse headphones no problem. Also, your internet speed is irrelevant. Your router/wifi is what’s most important. I’m throughly enjoying mine.
