If I sound too bullish on nuclear power and downplaying nuclear disasters, it's because I go up against the arguments every single day, and it can get frustrating. I apologize. Happy to wrangle brain cats whenever you need me bois. This was fun.

This was a very weird podcast because of how serious you were, whereas the boys were poking fun of everything, but I'm really impressed how you were able to handle it. I think people are underestimating how powerful the Photoshop AI tools are. There's a real picture as a base and a handful of AI generated bits added. It gets so much harder to tell that it's AI when 90% of the picture is real.

I live near Soudan, Minnesota. There's an underground mine there that's been closed since the 60s, but was donated to the State of Minnesota, and they run tours of the historical mine operations. Also, the U of M and some other scientific organizations built a neutrino detector in a giant cavern at the bottom level of the mine, half a mile underground. A neutrino beam was shot through the ground at the detector, from Chicago if I remember right? The experiment was to figure out if neutrinos have mass. But they chose that particular place because of the depth of the mine and the fact that all of the equipment is working and well-kept. The lab was deep enough that it was completely insulated from cosmic radiation.

On the driving topic, I think it's 'funny' that Minnesota has issued a new program where state troopers are trying to cut down on speeding on rural roads; meanwhile, all major highways have recently been bumped up to 60 mph. Now people drive 70 mph on highways, many of which are rural. Like, how is that program going to be successful? **major eye roll** Meanwhile, a hill I will die on is that I think the US needs to re-evaluate drivers every 10-15 years. Written and/or practical exams. Don't pass, you pay a fine or lose your license, etc. Granted, haven't figured out how to keep those that have lost their license from still driving. Also provide more services for the elderly to get places so that they don't HAVE to drive starting at 65. The US has huge swaths of the country that doesn't have public transportation and that really impacts the number of people that have to drive when they probably shouldn't.
The comment on Germany is somewhat funny, because when germany stopped their nuclear power plants, the proportion of coal and gass increased. This in essence seems to imply that germany believes it can go of nuclear, but in reality they aren't able

@Kylehill I really appreciated your seriousness about all of the ai and nuclear talk. I am curious, how do you manage thinking about all of these huge existential threats to society? It feels so easy to sink into denial about the problems/ turning a blind eye/ a depression that nothing can be fixed because everything is outside of our control. I think I am generally an optimistic person, but it is very sobering when I am directly confronted with these facts that are true... anyways, great episode, hope to meet you at Open Sauce! It's a hard term to sell but just Try to be realistic Acknowledge the good and the bad, don't deny the potential future atrocities while not forgetting that positive things also exist. Choosing what to care about also helps. Your life takes priority, you might not be able to convince the world nuclear energy is a good road to head towards, but you can certainly work on your health and wealth. The healthier and wealthier you are, the easier it is to make an impact in the world. I don't recall the term but there's a way of thought adjacent to nihilism, which dictates that life doesn't have an inherit purpose and nothing really matters, so you should just take in the pleasures of life and do as much stuff as you can for the fun of it. There are plenty of avenues you can look towards to help ease existential dread. Or watch some kurzgesagt videos if you feel like indulging in it instead.
I grew up in the early 80s and the term indian giver was used a lot. As was said the meaning was that someone is taking back something that was previously gifted or sold. In elementary school, long before learning the colonizer version of manifest destiny, but right after the heroic bloodless version of Columbus "discovering" America, the veiw of Native Americans was built on the offensively biased and grossly oversimplified story of the first thanksgiving where the Disney Peter Pan style "Indians" welcomed the pilgrims and gave them food and later gave or sold us land (both stories were perpetuated) but later on made war with us to take it back.

the idea of "indian givers" is that when the pilgrims came, the natives gave them a piece of land or traded it for booze and then came back after they changed thier mind or were finished drinking the traded booze wanting to take back the land.
@ViolentlyAmerican

Okay since literally nobody else will mention it, I will stick my neck out for AI. What they are referring to is *specifically* generative AI. AI that is trained on man made works, then it tries its best to make something based on those works without copying it directly. There is a *VERY* good reason experts in the field aren't at all concerned about AI, and that is because it's piss easy to control. With generative AI, you could hardwire it to NEVER generate anything involving naked children, or just not do any sort of pornography ever and there's nothing anyone could do about it without reverse engineering the AI. Which would take am actual lifetime to do. But if we're *not* talking about generative AI, we have literally nothing to worry about, the potential risks are incredibly minimal unless explicitly created with the intent to harm, in which the government likely keeps an extremely close eye on anyone with the potential to do so. The hardest part of dealing with AI is getting the government to force these preventative measures be taken and actually enforcing it. Though if we make a proof of concept of what can happen and make them see it with the public watching, action will have to be taken. You can especially get conservatives on board
So much easier to follow with the wide seperation stereo. really need to get that dynamic stereo mix.
