    Yeah, I think the re-issue flow was: -2009: stereo and mono CD boxes -2012: stereo vinyl (sourced from 2009 digital) -2014: mono vinyl (all analog)

    The new stereo mix is fantastic. It is so much better balanced and has an increase in clarity when compared to any other stereo mix of Revolver. The bass and drums have real presence. She Said, She Said has some issues where the guitars lost some power in the separation. That really is my only complaint. The outtakes are throughly enjoyable and I can see returning to them. I do my own recordings in my home Protools-based studio, so I enjoy “process” and hearing how the band and producer arrived at the final mixes.

    I think that my problem is primarily with the double-tracked vocals. On those tracks with double-tracked vocals, Giles Martin has elected to hard pan one vocal track to the left speaker and one to the right resulting in a very vague center image of the lead vocal, almost as if the vocal is out of phase. I would have preferred to have the double-tracked vocals combined into a tight center image.

    Yeah that’s a pretty weird mixing decision , period. If that’s what he did. Like he treated vocals like double tracked guitars.

    Revolver was my first experience listening to a record in stereo. I was 7 years old. My brother had a suitcase type with detatchable left and right speakers. When I heard the first few seconds of Taxman my mind was blown. Revisiting Revolver 55 years later with the new mix was equally mind blowing. I feel Giles repaired the gaping open space in the soundstage. Very enjoyable for me.

    Agree with your take on the new remix. The word I would use is that it’s not ‘organic’ sounding. Bass is too loud on some tracks, vocals are mixed out front, and the new mix of She Said, where they separate the lead guitars, sounds dreadful. For me, the original mono mix is still the best to listen too.

As much as I wouldn’t mind a copy of the 2022 mono mix, I’ll continue to enjoy my 2014 mono box until prices hopefully come down on the deluxe set. I purchased the Giles mix of let it be from Walmart and was totally disappointed. Paul had John did not sound like themselves nor did original instruments sound natural like the original. The bass was exaggerated and overpowered on the remix which to my ears removed the air and openness in the recording, resulting in a dead, dull and lifeless facsimile of the original.

    I haven't listened to Revolver very often but weirdly I know all the lyrics and I can sing every song effortlessly, I'm 70 and have played piano, guitar, keyboards, harmonica in bands when I was young but we never covered any Beatles tunes. This morning it dawned on me and I think It's because Revolver was the first Beatles album I got into on my first LSD trip. It was 1966 and I was 13. Man it was wild I could "see" the music pulsating out from the speakers a swirling mass of colours and patterns totally opposite to the album cover very strange indeed. Yep that's gotta be it now I have to learn how to play it maybe Yellow Submarine is a good start.

    Mike, I appreciate this video. I ordered the CD version of the Revolver box set, and I am very pleased with it. I must confess, I buy the new Beatles box sets more for the packaging than the remixes. Like you, I have so many versions of these albums that I'm suffering from "version fatigue," (if that's a thing!). I listen to CDs with a Pioneer XLR balanced output player run through a Decware tube stage which gives a nice warm sound. I have Klipsch LaScala speakers and the sound is fantastic. I still put on the '66 Capitol stereo and mono vinyls that I grew up with, and they sound great. Even the pops and clicks sound great to me. As George Harrison says in the Anthology video, "I prefer a bit of tape hiss."

I wish more reviewers would compare it to the current norm... for example alot of people have never even heard the original mixes (yes i have lsitened but they arent availble for daily lsitening). Before this I only ever listened to the 2009 remasters which is the only mixes available to buy new on vinyl or listen to on Spotify/apple music. In my opionon this new remix maybe sounds weird for people that have had the luxury of listening to original mix of the ablum for years, but for people like me who have only been able to listen to the 2009 remasters for the last 10 years, this mix sounds AMAZING imo. just my 2 cents. Amazing and people should not always expect everything to sound the same. Especially when they remastered and remix the Albums they have done stop far so that all the songs Will sound better with the equipment and stereo systems that we have today in the Year 2022 vs back in the Albums original release date. I'm sure they had the access to equipment that we are using in 2022 to make it sound the best that they can they would do just that because they wanted every album they released to be the best quality they could give us.

    The new stereo remix is possibly what would have happened if the Beatles had an 8 or 16 track tape deck available at the time! I love that the instruments are now so crystal clear, and panned around the stereo image stage in front, and that the vocals, and main drums are now centered, as they should have been originally. I love it! I have been a Beatles fan/listener since the mid 60s...... As I got older, into the 70s it always bothered me with the old stereo mixes; guitars and vocals on one side, and bass and drums on the other; it didn't sound like any of the newer, 'modern' 70s records I was hearing so I didn't understand why ......; once I found out in the later 70s, I just listened to the mono Beatles albums as much as possible, except for the likes of Sgt Pepper, the White Album, and Abbey Road, which sounded 'proper stereo'...!! I have the vinyl Revolver boxset, but I've only had a chance to listen to the remix so far; I'll get to the mono and 'extras' over the next few days.... After your review, I look forward to the mono; it always sounded amazing all those years ago in my youth - so powerful. I like the 2012 release; and I love attention to detail with the flip-back sleeve.... sadly they didn't reproduce that with the new '22 boxset.... yet with the UK release at least, they went to extra details on the record labels, with the placements of the original PMC and PCS numbers, and the "Sold In UK..." text across the label just below the large yellow Parlophone logo.....but no flip-backs on the sleeves??!! Shame!

There's literally no good reason for the 2009 Mono CDs not to be in print. The vinyl I understand; it was a big project and stampers wear out. But the CDs should be £10 a pop maximum on Amazon for the rest of eternity. I want to be seeing them in charity shops. The fact that the average Beatles listener is subjected either to poorly-remastered stereo that was poorly mixed to begin with, or Giles Martin's unfaithful and overdone remix hackjobs, is a disgrace. I'm glad I own the 2009 mono box and a black triangle Abbey Road so I can safely ignore all these wank deluxe editions consisting of one worthy disc (at most) with a bunch of filler.

    THANK YOU: for offering a common sense perspective on outtakes/demos/studio takes. In my opinion this type of material is perfect for streaming; I doubt most people truly *want* physical copies of that material. Which kinda makes it filler.

    On headphones this stereo remix sounds tons better to me than any old stereo version . I do have the original mono record from the 60s it sounds ok throu headphones but this version expands and makes all instruments vocals and drums clearer and much less muddy and lost in mix that the original suffered from. But then again the original was supposed to be played on a box recordplayer . Thankyou for posting

    Always appreciate your brutal honesty. My favorite versions of Beatle LPs are the original 1960s Capitol albums for a historical perspective. But those 1970s Parlophone LPs are a great bang for the buck. Thanks again Mike for preaching the truth.🫡

    Didn't realise new vinyl ought to be ultrasonically cleaned fresh out of the wrap. How do we do that? I've got one mint 80s vinyl that I'd like to get a good digitise of on first play, so I ought to make sure it's clean. Is it a case of sending it off to specialists?

    Just get an ultrasonic cleaner.. The Humminguru is pretty affordable (I guess), but if you're handy, you can make your own.. An ultrasonic cleaner w/ 6L tank, some other various bits & pieces and you can put one together for under $200. There's various posts on forums, videos on KZread and whatnot, etc.. just search around 'DIY ultrasonic record cleaner". ;)

    Good to know Mike, I was disappointed when Michael45 said the OG mono was more dynamic as I understood all OGs were compressed. Its easy to confuse surprisingly enough but Im glad you set the record straight here.

  • @youwhohear

    @youwhohear

    Жыл бұрын

    Leon-- I've noticed your comments on Michael45's original Revolver video, the most recent one, and now this one. All of them suggest you've seen the parlogram video where Andrew shows wave forms of compression between OGs and 2014 monos. And you want to make sure this objective way of assessing dynamics is understood when these comparisons are done. Fair enough. At the same time, I wonder if there's something more going on than what wave forms can show? For example, when I go to a live performance, it's never a perfect mix or balance. Given my position in the audience, I could hear all sorts of things differently than someone two rows down or even sitting next to me. Which is to say there are a lot of factors that make for the experience of music. And I wonder if pressing a record isn't only about trying to capture the sound perfectly. Are all the elements present and to what degree is a huge factor to be sure. I just wonder if pressing a record is as much an act of translation as documentation. Give me the experience of what it is like to hear the Beatles right there in the space, what did that feel like? It's like Van Gogh's Starry Night-- it doesn't look like a photograph of a starry night, and yet there is an emotional truth in the feeling of the painting that surpasses any such pictures that have been taken. In other words, maybe the best pressing (in terms of conveying the experience/feeling of the music) is impressionistic as much as it is realistic.

    @@youwhohear Theres nothing wrong about preferring the compressed version. My only qualm is with misinformation. Its well documented that Beatles OGs, as well as most OGs of the time even in other genres like Jazz, have a compression to them. Its easy to conflate it with dynamic probably because its easy to embellish a sound you like with "positive" words but when the meaning is the opposite to reality that should be pointed out I think.

    @@leon9021 i see. you just want michael45 to be more careful when he uses the word "dynamic" to describe the feeling he gets from a pressing that is technically compressed. you just want the right information out there. maybe a better word to capture what he means would be "lively."

    @@youwhohear Sure. In my mind, reviews are not best when one necessarily holds up one version but rather just explains the differences between them accurately and gives perspective for who might prefer one or the other, at least when both versions have good qualities. That way one knows more about what they might prefer. Thats very hard whenthe wrong descriptions are used however.

    Micheal45 had complete disdain and no experience with original pressings 2 months ago (despite all the comments on his sight to listen to an original if he was going to be relevant - he avoided that until the MoFi issue - it didn’t jive with his hype sticker euphoria) According to him new releases were the bomb. Now since he was so late to the game he is paying big bucks for as many OG as he can find and feels the original always blows a remaster away. I much prefer In Groove Mike’s true long term experience - we both nearly always hear the same distinctions between pressings.

I’ve listened to my mono revolver hundreds of times and am so excited for this hot cut. Revolver mono is my favorite LP and am so thrilled. Oh yeah, PLEASE CONSIDER James Wilsey's (Chris Isaaks original guitarist) 'El Dorado' from 2008. It is so freaking good and was never pressed on LP. Sounds tremendous too! Those are my dream picks. Don't get me started on jazz. The New Jazz label has been criminally ignored. Roy Haynes - 'Cracklin' with Booker Ervin. Mal Waldron - 'The Quest' with Booker Ervin & Eric Dolphy. Ron Carter on Cello. Abdul Malik New Jazz recs. Hank Bagby on Protone. Pat Britt - 'Jazz In San Francisco'. ALL Yusef Lateef SAVOY's! Not sure if you have access to any Euro Jazz titles? Anyway, keep up the superb work. Try and repress the Booker Ervin titles. Did you do 'The Blues Book'????? If no, please consider it. PEACE.....

    The original UK mono has all the bass cut below 80 Hz, just so you know. They did that in the old days because people's equipment (turntables) couldn't handle the low frequencies. Now you get the whole frequency register. It is cool to own both mono's, though. The new and old. The 2009 stereo is pretty bad.

  • @renaud_c_h

    I've only listened to the remix a couple of times but what struck me was McCartney's bass was way too loud. The balance of the instruments is indeed better, and the 'mistakes' like when McCartney starts singing Eleanor Rigby with the vocal track moving to the left speaker right after he starts singing El (eanor Rigby), that has been fixed. Having listened to the same stereo mix since I got the album in early 1979, it is hard to listen to the album in a different mix. True that the drums are better balanced and more audible, but it's not the Revolver album I'm used to. A question, what is the difference with the mono version contained in the mono cd box set, the mono version of the more recent release of the US albums on CD, the 2014 mono vinyl that was released separately and this new mono version?

    5:09, No they don’t run the old mix through a program to de mix it. They go back to the original source tapes before they were bounced to extract the original track from its original source tape then align all these source tracks into a protools project file. After that they can then remix the record minus all the previous bounce down tracks.

    You are wrong. This is not a remix from the stems. They use a computer with AI to pull apart the instruments (maybe using some stems where available) from the tape and create a multitrack to remix the album. There is extensive interviews that have been done talking about this technology.

  • @rabarebra

    @rabarebra

    @Scott Baxendale Wrong. They only had the 4-track to work on. Scott, you are correct how things usually are done, but not with this Beatles album. They do not have any original multitracks laying around. They only got the 4-track where it was bounced to, and that's it. Haven't you understood that they did this remix off of Jackson's AI software created for the Get Back documentary? This AI software takes the 4-track and tears it apart and recreates the missing waveforms here and there. This may for some sound artificial, because it will. There is no way they will get a natural sound when the AI software have to figure out missing information. It may sound good, yes, but not outstanding.

    I agree with Mike in that the sound of this new disc is off-putting. To me it sounds digital (which it is) and processed (which it also is). Maybe it is all the digital deconstruction and reconstruction that was done to this record, that was not done to the previous Giles Martin efforts. To me the music has lost its flow and sounds mechanical, like it was pieced together (it was). The sound kind of reminds me of early CD releases that had a hard sheen to them. Peter Jackson's new process for extracting certain sounds from a mix may be good for dialogue, but I'm not so sure about how good it is for music.
