Is the Modern Tanto the Ultimate Close Quarters Knife?

“The Modern Tanto: The Ultimate Close Quarters Knife”
In this episode I explore movement work relating to two instant classics: the @coldsteelknives Magnum Tanto XXII and the @crkt_knives @williamsbladedesign HZ6 Hira Zukuri knife. Moving with these two amazing blades allows me to introduce some principles of blade work relating to Japanese martial tradition. Specifically, the design of the tanto tends to resist modernized blade systems that often rely on FMA, and integrates more efficiently with its roots in Japanese swordsmanship.
In this episode I discuss body mechanics, the difference between arm-centric and core-centric principles, and the advantages of the tanto design using these two popular models. I hope you enjoy the video, which premieres tonight on my KZread channel (“Rolando Estocada”). 🙏🏽🔥👊🏽

What is your opinion on the pkal style inverted edge blades? I love the channel and your philosophy

Thank you! I appreciate your support. I’d have to review one to offer an opinion. However, the style of handling a normal blade in a pikal style is a good dexterity exercise. I tend to favor it.

Great video Rolando! I am a great fan of James Williams' interpretations of classic Japanese blade styles. I have a Williams Blade Design HZO and HZK, both produced by Winkler for WBD. They are beautiful in their simplicity. I also have the Williams designed CRKT Shinbu, another fantastic Tanto! I actually owm two Cold Steel Magnum Tanto XII's....and they are indeed great blades. That's what you have too. It's the Magnum Tanto XII because it has 12" blade, not XL. Keep up the fascinating videos!

Is there a tactical advantage to the Japanese style, or is it more a product of their culture and clothing? I own both knives too.

Massive tactical advantage in my opinion. The problem is that the style itself, if you find a dojo that even teaches it, is not readily accessible. There are nuances that are also very hard to teach or explain relating to biomechanics. I will admit that what tantojutsu I was exposed to was impressive.

No. The idea of an ultimate knife is a bit silly.

I prefer the traditional Japanese-style tanto over the modern American-style version. The blade geometry on the Japanese-style tanto is perfect for both slashing and stabbing.
