Is the Fractal Design Torrent Compact the perfect PC case?

Ғылым және технология

Need a recommendation on a parts list? Visit buildpicker.com - our dynamic PC configurator offering performance-optimized, great-value build part lists.
This video is a fairly casual look at some of the features and compromises of the Fractal Design Torrent Compact. It's got amazing airflow and fits a full ATX motherboard, as well as large GPUs. But there's a price to pay for reduced size, so we run through the major considerations you'll want to make if you're planning to build a PC in this case.
Because of the lack of control data, this isn't a full fledged 'review' - you can see thermal data in other reviewers examinations of this case. This video is intended to help you decide if you can accept the compromises and challenges of building a PC the Torrent compact way. We have tucked a couple of graphs in there though...

    I just updated my build with this case. I had the Enermax Saberay. HUGE case. Used the Enermax AIO rich turned out to be complete garbage. So I got a noctua cooler and saw that Gamers Nexus had the Torrent and Torrent Compact as the #1 and #2 cases for airflow and thought "perfect!" I got the compact because I wanted a smaller case. I absolutely love it. It's SO quiet. Those two big fans up front matched with a noctua cooler and fan on the cpu... It's so quiet that I can hear when the PSU fan kicks on. I'm terrible at cable management, so o really could've used a bit more space on the back, but even though it's tinted glass nobody is ever going to look at it. Anyway, I rate this case a 6 out of 5. I absolutely love it.

    It's a good case and I like it a lot now my PC is built. Note I made a mistake: The lower filter can be removed from the front, after removing the front panel. So that's easy to clean too.

    I'm happy with my solid torrent but it seems there are a few issues if you aren't going air cooling. As always a solid review, not the only one to point out the problems with this case but probably the best one.

    another superb review! You've just helped me eliminate the Torrent from my new build case decision. It's a sad decision because I've grown to really like the design of the Torrent, but I need an AIO (i9). I also don't like the idea of removing the 180s and replacing with 120s (i.e. swapping the fans' locations. Yes, I know Fractal designed the case this way but I really wanted a case with two large front-mounted fans, and a roof-mounted AIO). I also don't much like the top-mounted PSU, largely because it makes the roof-mounted AIO impossible. The choice had been whittled down to the Corsair 5000 Airflow, this case, the the Meshify 2. I think I've eliminated the Cooler Master HAF 500 and Lian Li 215 although I really like the design - and the price - of the Lian-Li. It's now looking like the Meshify 2, if it can fit the 3.5" and 2.5" drives I want, and the AIO that I need, and can clear Corsair Dominator RAM if I go with my preferred roof-mounted AIO. The Corsair 5000 is a contender, but it looks like you can't get a power supply, the 3.5" drive cage, and power cables in there at the same time! There's always something imperfect with these cases, and trying to figure out their suitability based on (possibly incorrect) documents, photos, and sales brochures on the web is problematic and fraught to say the least. That's why your video reviews are priceless: all the important points are addressed without succumbing to bias or marketing. Thanks.

    So true about imperfections. Due to the cable management issues, I was going to settle for the full sized Torrent. Somewhat overkill for me, but should be plenty of room for long term upgrade potential and a larger internal volume can help keep temps lower (it's not as concentrated). I even like the top mounted PSU because my case is in a floor level cubby and I have to run the cord up anyway to a power strip. But then I started considering getting an AIO cooled graphics card upgrade...

  • @treyquattro

    @treyquattro

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Nareimooncatt in the end I went with the Fractal Meshify 2 Compact (not the older Meshify C). I couldn't mount the 280mm AIO in the roof after all - there's enough space, just, but my RAM is too tall to allow it. I have a front-mounted AIO now. I'm happy with the decision. The case was nice to work with, but it is a tight fit. There's no extra space around the ATX board, so the removable roof panel is a major advantage while putting the PC together. And the wiring in the rear is still tight, but not as tight as the Torrent. I'm happy with my decision, even though I didn't end up with the two large front-mounted fans I wanted - I now have two non-RGB 140mm fans in front of the AIO radiator, but they're behind a mesh front panel and a dust filter so that's OK too. I don't think the lighted fan effect looks so great with so much plastic in front of them. Also, my graphics card is short. If you are going with a longer graphics card, and a front-mounted AIO, you will need a larger case.

    There rear glass panel is smoked so you really can't see the cable management. I did a simple build with this case, and used a M2 SSD right on the MB so I was able to close the rear panel with ease. Still that is something you do need to account for.

    They sell a solid sided one. I just ordered it. Should be fantastic with the two front fans and the matching 120 for the back. With solid sides, I dont care about much, lol. Ofc, I do want it cleaned up. But I have some flexibility now.

  • @swapsplat

    You don't need a 3rd fan for the back. The two fans up front move more than enough air, a 3rd rear fan would actually obstruct airflow.

  • @abnormallynormal8823
    @abnormallynormal8823 Жыл бұрын

    Honestly, the 011 air mini is cheaper and has more space for cable management in the back. It’s also easier to find 140mm fans to upgrade or replace, and running 140mm intake, 2 120mm intake and 4 120mm fans with Noctua low noise adapters on the 120mm’s can get you insane cooling with not much noise. It’s also super easy to fit an MATX board in it, where I think the cable grommets would interfere on this case.

  • @meteor1522

    The main highlight of this case (other than great thermal and airflow) is the aggressive front grill design.simply one of the best looks. but it’s definitely made for air cooled setup not AIB. I’m deciding between this and NZXT H7 Flow,another great case with great airflow it’s cheaper than Torrent Compact,has great cable management but not as good looking.

  • @BuildPicker

    You can add the AIO as front intake, using the supplied baffles. The two large fans can go in the base, acting as intake. You cannot fit a PCIe card in lower slots if you do that, as shown. You could either have the AIO exhausting at the front, or have all fans as intake, and allow hot air to be forced out the abck which is mostly open.

    120's will fit, I think 140's will too. If you try and put a Radiator down there you're going to have to work out thickness vs the GPUs depth to check there's room. The supplied 180's can only be relocated with an mATX board.

    @@watamalonez6802 I ended up getting the dark tint glass (non rgb) It's really not that bad if you're not running that much cable. I popped out their plastic wire guide things and just used the velcro straps. I also unbolted the 2.5 drive mounts and just looped most of the longer cables down to the bottom right of the rear panel and back around to avoid bunching. Plenty of cable tie down points, I would recommend having spare velcro straps on standby, they made life very easy. Everything fits fine, plenty of room actually, but I didn't run any SATA power at all (I just plugged my fans direct to mobo not using the included fan hub). The cooling is amazing! Even when the twin 180's are at 400-500 rpm my parts are absolutely chilly. I almost didn't buy this case because of the cable management concerns but just take 10 minutes to plan out your cables and pop out those dumb plastic cable guides and you're golden (they come out easy if you pinch them right). Really happy with it, perfect for an air cooled build. Sick.
