Is The Fisker Ocean A Good Buy, Or Is It "Good Bye"?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This year hasn't been a good one for EV startup Fisker, with more and more bad news hitting the company. It started with poor financials, then widening concerns over liquidity. This week, a rumored deal appears to have fallen through with a major automaker and Fisker has found itself delisted from the NYSE.
Then, yesterday, Fisker announced massive price cuts for its Fisker Ocean EV, price cuts that put its entry-level model below $25,000.
But should you buy one? And what risks lie ahead?

I’m a Fisker Ocean One owner. I’m not going to trade it in. I and my wife are hopeful that service is available after. The vehicle is built well enough as well that we hope it won’t be needed. That being said…it’s such an amazing vehicle and fun to drive. In it for the long haul!

Funny thing: at Fully Charged LIVE 2022 in San Diego, you couldn't even get close to the Fisker Ocean because so many people were mobbing around it. Maybe Fisker envisioned too much, relying on vague promises from suppliers and investors to make those visions happen, and at affordable prices…? Or maybe there are darker forces at work behind the scenes to handstring the efforts. Dunno. But I was hoping they'd succeed, as the more the merrier in the EV transition to a cleaner, better world.

I think they focused too much on “innovative” features and “groundbreaking” new vehicles than focus on executing what they promised to deliver, and they prioritized the most-complex trim of the Ocean, which makes manufacturing start-up more challenging. If they’d focused on a simpler trim, ironed out the bugs and delivered on time, and collected payments on time (apparently they didn’t have accounts receivable worked out either), they’d have made their job easier. I also heard from a friend who tracks EVs closely that they continued requesting design changes after “design freeze”, complicating launch when their contractor manufacturer should have been focusing on making vehicles. As anybody involved in design, development and mass manufacturing would know, the more changes you make closer to or especially during launch, the more it slows you down, the more they cost, and the more likely you will have production and quality issues. I knew they were in trouble as soon as I saw the motorized hatch door that retracts into the floor of the PEAR concept, which doesn’t fit in with an “affordable” vehicle. Too much focus on flash than substance. As a product designer, it is a lot more fun to design than execute, but if you’re running a business, you have to focus on execution as well. You have to be able to shift modes, especially in a resource-slim small startup. Even if you contract manufacturing to someone else, you have to work with them closely and frequently until any production or quality issues are worked out. Then spend what capacity you have left on new vehicles.

«Darker forces»? Well, you seem to be conspirational, so sure - disregard the above comment, and leakages from upper management within the company simply pointing towards the oldest trick in the book: A badly managed company by top mgt, with a not well sustained cooperation with Magna in Austria, although the producer really wanted Fisker to succeed, but CEO and CFO of Fisker ran the business partnership into the ground. So no «dark force» at play, just simply incompentent management from an exceptional designer.

Even if an EV is well-conceived, under-capitalization can prevent it from effectively getting to market. Some promising EVs (e.g., Aptera) struggle with capitalization and get stuck in a perpetual "almost ready for release" state. Others make it to market, but the profit margin is thin or non-existent (see: legacy carmakers).

Thumbs Up video / comments.. Thanks. Fisker still needs to file its 2023 10 k, find financing to restart production, deliver 2.0 and 3.0 software updates for the Ocean, then find partner(s) to start production on the Ronin, Pear and Alaska Pick-up. Over 6,000 Oceans on the roads, so how much can it accomplish in 6 weeks to restart production. ??

the main problem especially with EVs is that the softwares, controlling everything in the car, are not open source. And even though you could replace modules like battery or motors with third party suppliers in case the company went out of business, they will probably not work because the software won't recognize them

Just bought one from ATL dealer this weekend. Definitely similar to Range Rover in appearance/style and build quality appears excellent to me. It is slightly larger than the Model Y or a Ford Edge on inside. Drives excellent on 2.0 software, no noted electronic issues and from what I read online (and I read a LOT), 2.0 solves most issues. Range 360 is wayyyy more than other competitors. This vehicle will be in addition to our existing 2019 Durango which has been driven hard but we are keeping. The Ocean will be the daily driver. There are two likely issues that I see: 1) you will eventually need parts at some point, probably 4+ years in the future, and 2) what to do with an unexpected issue requiring parts/service like a wreck? I think both those things are fairly unlikely early on and simple maintenance like brake fluid or battery replacement (a traditional AGM 12v) should be doable even if fully orphaned. I think if you look at it like a 4-5 year purchase for $39k for a fully loaded upscale midsize SUV with NO planned resale, then it is a reasonable buy for you. No one expects to keep their iPhone past 4 years, same concept.

My folks had the original Volvo C70 coupe (the hardtop co-developed with TWR racing, not the later convertible) and anything that didn't come directly from the 850 parts bin was extremely difficult to get.

I love Robert's aging wheels, I'm halfway between "get in and go" and his level of extreme advanced tinkering. I have to share the story of my first car - a 1969 Renault, in the USA, in 1989. If that was before your time, aim in history to the Chrysler takeover of AMC, my car was a footnote in that story. I spent time learning how to make my own gaskets, figuring out what parts from other models would work, sitting in the driveway hoping for miracles, and even a few hours driving. Your advice is wise, maybe an orphan is for you, maybe not.

Your comments on how older OEM EVs are hard to find parts for etc does make one have to appreciate Tesla. They have changed almost all the innards in their cars multiple times over but the interfaces between the systems have pretty much remained the same. Ergo if you need a new cabin heater unit in your old Tesla that has resistance heating strips, they may be able to replace it with a heat pump and an Octovalve replacing the super bottle. Sure it might be expensive but because of the way they design their systems it could be done. It can probably be made to fit. So there is somewhat of a good thing that the exterior of their cars don't change but the interior parts under the hood constantly do. Namely Longevity.

Was the Magna deal a good thing? If you look at it another way, Fisker is IP only and doesn't own the assets of an assembly plant and tooling, meaning it's easier to just let it evaporate. Magna's left holding the bag on the expensive tooling and the bankruptcy will no doubt hurt it greatly. Computing your profit per unit, your burn rate, tax depreciation, and all kinds of operating expenses definitely works differently when you phoned in the production like Fisker did. But in the end, each Fisker built has to provide profit and cover costs for Magna, so they're sharing the benefits of sales/scaling instead of unburying themselves more quickly. Profitability in the car market and the EV market in particular, is still voodoo, and even CEOs who claim they're profiting off of each car should be scrutinized. Many have admitted they have never made problems on each unit (Ford, Rivian, early Fiat) and others like Tesla claimed early profitability that was actually based on EV credit sales, which were real but not necessarily sustainable, scalable, or repeatable by everyone, everywhere.

The software 2.0 isn't really good and this really hampers the vehicle's usefulness There are Fisker Employees that are spilling the beans about how poorly the Vehicles are made and major issues with some features. Changing parts (if you can get them) is one thing, writing software for the vehicle is something that is totally not practical.

There are certainly issues but the reviews are pretty clear that the vehicle mostly works fine with software 2.0 and you probably can drive it for some time until something goes wrong. The only question that will always linger is how long that „some time“ will be. My guess would be 2-3 years until something happens where repair might be hard to come by.

You Have Problems, Not Issues Somewhere, at some point over the recent past, someone decided that it was no longer acceptable for a person to say what he or she means; it was no longer acceptable to speak in precise, direct words. And what’s worse, someone, somewhere decided that we should all be offended when someone calls a problem a problem. Everything has to be translated into some sort of euphemism. I don’t really know why it started, but can we please stop referring to every problem as an issue? An employee no longer has a problem keeping up with production; he has an issue. A child no longer has a problem behaving in class; she has an issue. A married couple in therapy no longer has problems in their marriage; they have issues. Even bad weather now causes performance issues on the football field and traffic issues on the road; and a basketball player with a sprained ankle has an ankle issue. I’m not sure what’s so offensive about discussing traffic problems, health problems, or a sloppy football game. Is it just me? The problem-that is, what’s wrong-with substituting issue for problem is that those two words are not synonymous-and no amount of being politically correct, disingenuous, or even condescending-yes, it can be condescending-will make it so. An issue is a topic, such as The candidates will discuss the issues at the debate. That means that the candidates will discuss the different topics, or subject areas, involved in running our country. A problem is something negative. A problem is something that needs to be solved. A problem is something that we try to overcome. A problem is something that we don’t want. There, I’ve said it. And it feels great. An issue is not a problem, but I’ll tell you what is a problem: the grammatically incorrect trend of telling someone that he has an issue when what you really mean is that he has a problem. Call it what it is, and it’ll be easier to solve.

Anybody who bought or would buy their vehicle will have NO place to go for service/parts/etc. There is no aftermarket because they haven't built enough cars for anybody to care about creating one.
