Is the Eminence DV-77 as good as they said? DV-77 vs V30 & More

Some years after it’s release, I get to check out an Eminence DV-77. Is it a V30 killer or was it just hype?

What did you think of the DV-77? I think it's rad. I made a bunch of IRs of it and the V30 available via my brand new Patreon: www.patreon.com/TOJB
Great video and demonstration!!! When I designed the speaker with Mick, we really wanted to capture some of the magic of the older Celestion speakers, while delivering a unique sound all its own. It was never meant to be a direct competitor to the V30, but I see why people group them together. Maybe I can send something new we are developing to you in the future 👍🏼

hey man! is the DV77 the speaker that is used in your plugin as well?
@OMEGAAMPWORKS
13 күн бұрын
@@6oundStudio Unfortunately no. The DV final prototyping was completed at a similar time that our Plugin was being completed so we weren't able to add it. The speakers in our plugin are based on the VM12-65 that we had produced, and the MS-60 in the plugin was a prototype that we never released. We will be releasing an IR pack that I highly recommend as we feel that they better represent what our cabs and speakers sound like.

Ive only ever used v30s for the last few years but im blown away by the dv 77 and hearing them blended together was perfection to my ears, i know mick used to use the g12k100 and jim uses v30 and together they sound amazing, but they knocked it out the park with this signature speaker.
I gotta say that entire rig looks sick. The lichtlaerm, the marshall, and the mayones.
DV-77 sounds so tight and articulated.

I think the opposite, a tremendous lack of thightness and transient response. Sounds too soft, too compressed. The high end too "harsh". It reminds me a little bit the old greenbacks at the breakup, but, messy. just like any eminence speaker. I say that eminence speakers sounds great in the bedroom at low volume, but in the real world of stage and studio, it doesn't do the job at all. There's always something bothering me.
Great video as usual dude!
Great speaker - I know I'm biased but I loved the blend of DV77 and the LCFR here! The rolled off presence of the DV77 really profits from the grind that the LCFR brings to to the table! Now I need to get some DV's to blend them. Thanks for making me spend money

Great demo! On its own the DV-77 probably isn't my speaker, but the DV-77 + LCFR mix sounded great! Cheers!
The DV-77 is really cool. Love the sounds of it on its own over the other speakers, but when you mixed it with the LCFR that was a jewel

It all sounds like SM57 I've watched a few of these now and my takeaway is that Eminence tend to be a more fizzy and compressed while the V30 is very dynamic and mid forward with a rolled off top end. So the two blend really well together.
That DV sounds nice! I definitely still prefer that old-school V30 overall, especially on single notes.
Recently i built my own Cab, 2x12 loaded with a DV-77 and a Demon. And The Combo is killer. Sometimes im a little bit annoyed of the slightly high fizz of the demon, but overall great sound.

Yes. All of that checks out
When I bought my Marshall 2x12 used I was pleased when I found it was loaded with a DV-77 and a V-30 G12. I feel they complement each other very well. I played the Same cab with 2 V-30s and it sounded a bit thin to my ears which illustrated how present the DV-77 was in mine. Once again great video!

As a 80's Fane Classic 50 guy I'd love one for one of my tube amp repair test cabinets.
I pair the DV-77 with a hempdog, I was so close to selling the hempdog, but that would take a few paragraphs on what I'd done wrong and why the combination sounded bad. Ive never liked the hiss of the V30 on its own, but pairing in with the DV really balances out the weaknesses. You're makimg me want to shoot out the Hempdog with an LCFR for a first video. Great video as always, mate!. I'll look into your patreon!.
Was not disappointed, solid vid as usual. Like I mentioned in the group, love my pairing of the DV-77 and CV-75 in my KSR cab. Will say, from a production standpoint, I will cycle between a V30/G12H for stuff that is primarily on 6 strings, but for my stuff, which is all ERG related, that aforementioned combo has been my goto. Appreciate the free IR’s and it’s rad seeing your channel blossom into what it is. Keep it up, and thanks! :)

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne My guy, The only videos I could not find are with the DV-77 and Neo Creamback. I watched comparison after comparison. I didn't want 2 of the same speakers in my cab. I wanted salt/pepper on one sugar/spice with the other. I loved how the DV-77 sounds and loved the gritty/creamy nature of the Neo Creamback. Sweating, I pulled the trigger buying both with discounts, one from MF and one from Sweetwater. I was very happy with my purchase. My rig is indeed mine, lol. Get the Creambacks and compare each with the DV-77, get some views. You're welcome.

Compared to V30 the DV77 definitely sounds tighter and it seems it also has a faster low end and mid-range response. There's a certain glassiness to its mid-range.
These are like the 4 best metal guitar speakers.

Nice video as ussual. Good job man. Regarding Demon, what I noticed this speaker is more for 7string guitar, low tuning and specialy for very dark amps. You shoild try Victory Kraken (great with this amp) or PRS MT also very nice. I also noticet that Demon doesn't like EL34 somehow. No idea why. Anyway , dv77 is a great speaker for me too .
Best speaker videos on KZread! I wish you had done a comparison with the LCFR on the cap edge vs the DV-77. In your LCFR video that was my favorite mic position!

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne haha yeah you put a lot of work into these! Thanks again 🙂
DV77 has become my preferred speaker to listen to. It mixes well almost anything. I have one matched up with a Redback in a 212 cab and the blend of the two puts my 412 Mesa cab to shame in a lot of ways. V30s are cool, but they are so ubiquitous. They also seem to have a stifled top end that either lacks fidelity, or can be too harsh/fizzy… but I don’t need to tell you about the V30 😂!
The DV-77 isn't bad, although I've only played IR versions of them and not through the physical speaker inside a cab. I never truly gelled with it in the past, but I totally get why other people really like them. That demon speaker though, that is more my speed! Thanks for the speaker comparisons John, looking forward to the Fane F70 review. They get a lot of attention, but I haven't heard too many examples of that speaker being played.
I paired a DV-77 with a Fryette P50E and I've been very happy with the results. I'm trying to find something a bit more unique than the traditional V30 sound, and I dig the results. Cheers from the High Desert!

I really wished they made an 8 Ohm P50E. Just got a 16 Ohm one recently and dig it!
That DV77 has some really nice mids. It sounds a lot closer to the noises I’m hearing in my head 😅I might have to make some irresponsible choices after this and somehow enough to end up with a Prometheus as well.

Excellent comparison, very well done. DV77 sounds great here, reminds me of a K100 in a good way. V30 is also very nice here, is it a recent one? The DV77/V30-blend is my favorite. The other two speakers are way to high end focused for my taste. Nice to hear some new riffs! Well done, John.

Dv77 sounds waaaay better than the v30. Alot smoother and balanced as opposed to the spikey top end of the v30
Wow. This is the first speaker you’ve AB’d against the V30 where it actually holds up and sounds BETTER imo. For simplicity sake, the V30 just sounds so much older than the DV77. It sounds flabby and harsh while the DV77 almost sounds mix ready on its own for the genre. Really sick.
