Fun fact. The 1996 Lotus Elise used the front wiper mechanism from the AX!

I've had 3 ax's and probably half a million km on them. My current one and the one before were 1.6 swapped. 700kg and 120hp is enough for the mountainous area I live in. I have a diesel xantia but I'll never get rid of this thing, it's the only car that I don't get sick of driving. The weak point on these is the rear trailing arm bearings. Everything else is cheap and easy to fix. People mistake a light build for cheapness, these are actually very well engineered and built.

Totally agree, while a light build I do think this car is well built and mine has done a few thousand miles of happy driving already! Glad to hear you have enjoyed yours too!

Nice car! I used to have 3...a 1.1 liter, a 1.4 which was very fast for that time and a 1.4. diesel. That crazy diesel drove 30 kilometers on one liter of diesel!!

The original brief for the AX was for a more radical, almost one box, concept. The bonnet was going to be stubby and short and the emphasis was on ultra light weight. I think this could have been another landmark Citroen if it came to be. The final result was still smaller than the average supermini and the weight was kept down with clever use of plastic hatch and bonnet and other design features. This resulted in a car that was decent in terms of performance and economy. Nice to see you preserving this example. 👍🏼

I have an original Citroen AX GTI, with the 1.4 multipoint injection motor. The engine have 95hp on 800kg... with´in 9sec i drive 62mph. It´s a light weight car and so much fun to drive.

I had a similar model. Very dependable and dirt cheap to maintain and run, I liked it a lot. The reason I got rid of it was my personal safety. No airbags and very little crash protection. With all these huge and heavy cars on the road these days, I really did not fancy getting into an accident with this car.

My Dad had one of these, an F-plate 11TRE in Tropical Blue. One morning we left the house and the rear window had shattered into a billion pieces and the gas struts pushed the boot lid out. Never figured out how it happened

Citroen should have sold these in Australia with air-conditioning. A really great cool little car.

Definitely! Reminds me of the Pandas - they sold the classic in Japan with air con, but nowhere else... not sure why, always intrigued me! I think I'd be happy with an AX or Panda with air con, even over here it would be a cool gimmick but definitely would have been cool over there!

Glad that you are better, nice to see you again ! It looks like you have dropped on a nice little car there. I really liked those jazzy 90s interiors, everything is so dull these days.

Thanks Glyn, great to be back! Absolutely, you never get strange jazzy interiors like this anymore, at least not often and never quite like this 90s style! For a daily I really love these mid 90s cars - fun interiors, modern enough to be reliable with injection and auto choke, good enough on fuel, but not too new to be soulless or boring!

awsome little video im currently dailying a 1,0 5 door needs some work but overall a cracking car i have had around 14 axs in total including a mk1 GT and also a 1.0 that i converted to a 1.6 VTS from the newer saxo. keep up the good work.

Thank you! Good stuff, sounds like you certainly love the AX and I can see why! The 5 doors seem very practical too and I must admit I was looking forward to having a 5 door 1.5d but this 1.0 is still fantastic! I imagine the 1.6 goes in very nicely, seems to be a common swap, a bit like Punto swaps into old Pandas!

It should definitely be a contender for you! I've spoken about perfect dailies before and I think the best ones have got to be the AX, Panda and Twingo - it's that sort of 90s era where it's still fun and enjoyable, still some soul, funky interiors, good economy and decent insurances costs etc. Still usable and practical! There's lots of good contenders from this era!

@@OGCars I have a 1986 Panda, one of the last Mk1 models, but i would'nt daily it because i fear the rust 😱 it's in really good contition. Too good for everyday use. My current daily is a 2009 Daihatsu Mira, what is a great car, but it lacks the retro vibe... 😅

Lots of years ago, latter part of the 80's, I bought an almost brand new Peugeot 405 from the local main dealer. Some months later, with some miles on the clock, I took it in for its scheduled service. The loaned me a Citroen AX for the day. Can honestly say that I have never encountered a more tinny sounding and feeling car in all my life.

Oh blimey, this makes cars like the 126 and Panda feel like an un tinlike quilted paradise 😳😂 I’m not sure if the later ones were any different to the early ones in terms of that!

@@OGCars I have in fact owned both a 126 Bis, and one of the last of the early Pandas, a 1050. Neither made such an impact on me for their tinniness as did the AX.

@@andrewpreston4127 fair enough, it’s nice to hear other opinions and thoughts! I can’t say the AX is plush inside and it is on the tinnier side but I certainly thought of other tinnier cars, but that’s what we love here on OG Cars 😉 Thanks for watching!

Small car with little weight and a bigger engine = fun! I love the styling on the GTs as well, I was very tempted by later GTIs but they do cost a fair whack more (being a cheap daily it wouldn't have suited!)

  • @OGCars

    @OGCars

Personally, I prefer the AX - has just a bit more character and feels more "different" or personalised. The AX is a great car with a great engine series, but there's no doubting the Twingo holds a stronger place in my heart and I imagine G prefers the Twingo to her old AX as well, but we loved that AX a lot too!
