I preordered one as a backup to the R5C and R5. It will also act like a focal length extender for the Sigma 105/1.4, which makes it a bit more versatile. I liked the low price and the non-stop recording. Thanks for doing a recording length test in the 4k Fine mode!

Great review Carl. Thanks for the time digging into the R7. You've basically read my mind in terms of it being the perfect little B-cam for a C70. I've been building a kit list for a couple of months for a new job and really wanted a 2 camera setup to integrate into an existing Canon environment. The C70 as A-cam gave limited B-cam options for a good price but the R7 seems to slot in exactly where it needs to with features to be a great little brother for the C70. The 4K Fine mode looks excellent (albeit KZread quality). Thanks again!

Thanks for the great review Carl. I have been shopping for a smaller legit video camera to use for personal shoots, like vacations, graduations etc. but I also wanted a solid b camera to pair with my C200 or C300 mkII. Once I heard it records in C-log 3 and also offers Canon cinema gammit I was sold. I also plan to use it on a smaller gimbal to save my shoulders on long shoots. I had an EOS R6 for that purpose but I sold it a year ago and bought the C200 as a b camera to my C300 mkII. I have found that it is too big to use comfortably with a gimbal or hand held, unless it is on my shoulder. I really feel that the R7 will fit nicely with the other two cameras and was a no brainer for the price. I picked up a used one for $1,200. and am stoked to use it.

I think this camera sounds really exciting. I want one! My unstabilized Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 told me it wants to be mounted to Canon's first APS-C camera with IBIS. The video specs are quite compelling, and the Tascam adapter looks like a great accessory. The focal reducer is wonderful too, turning this essentially into a full-frame camera. I currently have my Sigma 18-35 mounted to a Panasonic G85 with a Viltrox speedbooster. My practice is always to wait until the next generation, after cameras flood the used market, and prices drop. Will this be the right camera to make me switch to Canon or at least supplement my Micro Four Thirds arsenal? Quite possibly.

A full frame sensor is not ideal for video: Depth of field is inadequate for most video purposes, meaning that you have to use wider apertures which results in having to increase the iso, which reduces the quality…substantially! That is why video cameras generally do not use 35mm (24x36mm) sensors. Yes, 35mm sensors can have larger pixels resulting in better low light performance, I agree. However, I need depth of field for filming most things…the background being in focus at the same time as the kids on the beach etc. All-Intra would have been good, but boy, not as good as inbuilt nd filters. Nothings perfect! 😄

The problems I have with the drop-in filter adapter is 1. the horrendous price, and 2. the fact that it is an adapter, limiting me to EF lenses after installation. RF lenses will not work on this adapter

I never recommend people hold off choosing a camera for one that doesn’t exist yet unless the rumour mill is absolutely certain somethings on its way soon. I am also very curious to see what a full frame camera in between the r7 and r6 would look like… but there might not be one! We will have to wait and see. But these are tools, if you need a tool now to do your work, buy one now.

@@carlyates2487 There's just no point buying something until its good enough to use and reasonably priced. Canon is failing miserably with overheating, overpriced lenses, not allowing competitors make RF lenses, 30 min recording limits, some having AF issues and some camera being way overpriced while still having these issues. So,, wait for RP2 and see what it might offer. If you own Canon DSLR, don;t make the switch to mirrorless just for the sake of it.

wait for a non existing camera? what a silly recommendation. camera companies arent like phone companies that upgrade yearly. youre probably gonna wait a long time. and regardless whatever it comes with isnt going to beat r7 in all aspects like the 32mp apsc reach. even if it does, you can always sell and upgrade.

Good value for money? Good RF lenses cost a lot more than this body. And going for discontinued EF lenses with adaper isn't "value for money". Canon needs to stop being greedy and open up RF mount for 3rd parties like Sigma and Tamron

I was considering the 90D for a while until the R7 was announced, I think depending on budget and if you already have EF Lenses I'd say get a $50 adapter for lenses and get the R7 for the higher quality 4k footage that is downscaled from like the 7k resolution. You get C Log 3 so you can basically grade video like you can Raw Images, all this for about $300 more, but all depends what you need it for and what system of lenses you might already have. I'm considering getting the R7 since I already have a sigma EF 18-35 lens and want an upgrade into the 4k world for weddings and photos that isn't 4k dolloars lol.
