Is the Amazon Basics Notebook Better than Moleskine? | Notebook Review

If you're looking for an affordable notebook, you're bound to come across the Amazon Basics notebook in your search.
While the price is lower than many of the competitors: Moleskine and Leuchtturm1917 - does it match up in terms of quality?
In my opinion, it's a great value! If you are blowing through notebooks and want to save some money, the Amazon Basics notebook is a smart option.
Note: After a few months of consistent usage, the cover will begin to break down and rip at the spine and the bookmark may detach.

Thanks for the review. I’m going to honestly say, I’ve had mine about 6 months and never used because I have the L1917 and a few others grid/squared A5 notebooks. Started a new job in November 2021 and wanted a fresh new notebook, this was up because it’s slightly small (A5 Slim-ish) and it has 240 pages (I got the grid/squared, my favorite for 7+ from Amazon US). I’m pretty pleased, BUT I had to glue down the back page to the construction paper because I opened my book with normal force 🤷🏽‍♀️ and the back page tore open at the seam. Alas, VIOLA, I simply glued the page down and PRESTO 🤗 I love that it’s slightly slimmer and I keep a Field Notes in the back pocket with my job passwords in code and important telephone numbers 🥰 very portable.

Nice video! The Amazon basics notebook works very well for me. I use those notebooks with fountain pens mainly and a few mildliners, the pages show no feathering nor ghosting. What I like the most about the Amazon paper is it can show ink shading, my favorite feature in an ink. I will try Clairefontaine paper next when I finish my current journal.

I agree wholeheartedly with this review, the amazon notebooks will fit 99% of the general population who just needs to take notes and doodle something every once in a while. That being said, I find it incredibly depressing that notebooks are considered luxury items these days, before I started using moleskines in the late 90's for work related reasons (I needed something durable and, believe it or not, they used to be incredibly well made before the company outsorced the paper to China), I used to buy stuff locally, there was this old bookbinding shop that had these really well made and affordable notebooks, these kind of places seem to have disappeared nowdays, a shame.

The 1917 is WAAAAAYYYYY BETTER! I’ve had both and I sweat by the 1917 since I first got one. Way better paper than Moleskine.

If you write with a ballpoint, gelpen, or rollerball, it does almost not matter at all what notebook you use. If you write with a fountain pen, that is a VERY different story. Leuchtturm 1917 and Moleskine are notebooks for fountain pen users.

Is the Amazon notebook paper acid free?

It is! "Archival-quality pages made from acid-free paper-resists damage from light and air"

@@theelliotchan If you believe that I have some ocean front property in Arizona you might want to buy. Not that "acid free" automatically means anything. It doesn't. You can say a paper is acid free based on the material used to make it, even if ythe paper itself is full of acid. Amazon paper is NOT archival quality. It's barely last till the end of the week quality.

@@jamesaritchie1 - This isn't a subject people should be intimately familiar with, as far as acid-free paper and what that means. So it's a bit excessive to bust out the "if you believe that" insults. The product page says "acid-free", he quotes the product page saying that it's acid-free.

The Amazon Basics notebook is fine, if you use cheap pens. Pretty much any notebook will work. But if you use rollerballs or fountain pens, the Amazon notebook is a cheap peace of crap. Those other notebooks are not luxury items, their intended for people who take writing seriously, and want it to last for a long time. The Amazon paper is no better than what you find in the three ring binders that children take to school. It's a little thicker, but thicker does NOT mean better. The most populat fountain pen paper is Tomoe River. It comes in two weights, 52gsm and 68gsm. Leuchtturm is 80gsm for the old paper, and 110gsm, I think, for the new. Rhodia comes in 80gsm and 90gsm. None of these are very thick paper, but they're a hundred times better than what's in the Amazon notebooks, and will last many, many decades longer. Even Walmart's Exceed Brand contains far better paper, and comes in several formats, such as a regular notebook/journal and a bullet journal. It also comes with blank, lined, or dot grid paper. They cost ten dol=llars US. Amazon sell a dozen brands of notebooks with better paper for ten dollars or less. Some of the ten dollar notebooks sell for five dollars, if you buy ten of them. Anyway, paper is not good or bad because of how thick it is. Some of the thickest paper is also the worst. Paper is good or bad because of the quality of the materials used, and because of the manufacturing process. As for pens, for those who don't know, there are three types f pens with a ball that dispenses the ink. Ballpoint pen use oil based ink, rollerball pens use a water based ink. The same ink as fountain pens, in fact. Gel pens, of course, use gel based ink. The best of these inks for lasting writing is waterr based bulletproof, or waterproof, or document ink. You're wasting your time using such ink on Amazon Basics paper. The sad thing is that China makes some very good paper. So does Vietnam. This paper is much cheaper than what is in Rhodia, Clairefontaine, Leuchtturm, Apica, or many other great notebooks, but Amazon still won't pay for it. The Chinese made paper used in Walmart's Exceed brand is only about a quarter more expensive for the same size notebook, but Walmart still sells it for ten dollar in notebooks that have two hundred and forty pages. Amazon still won't pay for it.

Leuchtturm is German and means: lighthouse, you pronounce it like this: "[lɔɪ̯çtˌtʊʁm]"
