Is the 2019 Honda Ridgeline a GOOD truck or GREAT truck?

The 2019 Honda Ridgeline AWD continues to offer truck usability with non-truck like features. Under the hood is the tried and true 3.5L V6 producing 280 HP backed by a 6-speed automatic transmission. Does the Ridgeline have enough to persuade truck owners to leave the conventional truck brands and come buy a 2019 Ridgeline? Check out all the details!

I got a 19 rtle back in august. If I were you now, I'd wait for the next generation. There's nothing wrong with the current model just the small things that you probably already read about such as narrow rear door opening and no tailgate lock. Imo, the ground clearance could've been a tad higher, but I'm good with it. It's a dream to drive and I had a Tacoma and Titan prior to the RL. Good luck.

@@squidusn71 There's an easy fix for the rear doors (you can use the front door parts in the back and get them to open to a reasonable angle, takes about an hour and $25) and Honda has an OEM tailgate lock available now (there are also aftermarket options). Should've been designed with these to begin with though!

Excellent video. Thank you! A few other unique features the Ridgeline has are that were not mentioned in the video; 1. The truck has 'two' rear-view cameras. One on the tailgate and one on the righthand side minor (extremely helpful), 2. The spare tire is on a sliding tray in the trunk. It's super easy to retrieve and the tire stays clean. Other trucks make you crawl under them in the muck to retrieve the spare. 3. It has more safety features than any other truck.. Too many to list, but well worth checking out. The truck is so safe my insurance only went up $17 when I moved from a twelve year old Jeep to the brand new Ridgeline. 4. It has an ingenious cap-less fuel filler pipe. No cap to bother with. 5. The truck is a front wheel drive truck; the only one on the market. This gives it excellent handling on skittish roads. You can of course dial in all wheel drive any time if you buy one with that.. 6. The truck has four wheel independent suspension and unibody construction.. The only truck on the market with these features. These combine to give the truck an outstanding ride and incomparable handling. 7. No truck on the market is as quiet and comfortable to ride in. The ride is more like a luxury SUV than a truck. 8. It is by far the easiest mid-size truck to get in and out of for the driver and front passenger. The front door openings are larger than any other mid-size truck. I am too tall to get into the other mid-size trucks without kinking my neck severely to get through the door opening. But the Ridgeline ,,, no problem. We've had our 2019 Ridgeline for 6 months. No problems at all with it. We are as pleased with it as the day we bought it.

Pull my bass boat , put my dirt bike in back. The bed is already totally protected stock and the tow package is stock. Nothing better period ! A joy to drive and use every day. You missed the built in dog bowls in the back doors...water tight too ! I get 29 to 30 mpg on highway too!

I've had my BE for 4 months and really like it. I had owned two Tundras in the preceding 8 years and they were great trucks, but they were just much larger and more thirsty than what I needed. This Ridgeline is really the best of both worlds for someone who doesn't really need a huge truck. The ride, mileage, and tech are vastly better. Enjoy your new ride.

As a former owner of a 2007 Ridgeline from Tampa Honda and the current owner of a 2018 RTL-E, this is an excellent truck. Yes Raiti, i absolutely thought the same thing about the mirrors questioning why they didn't put an LED strip there for turn signals. From my experience with the Ridgeline, I can say there you will have faith the truck will go where you want it to go no matter the weather here in Tampa. I have friends who think i drive a bit "crazier" when the roads are wet, but what they are witnessing is that it will not slip, slide, spin (unless you really really want it to) on our wet roads. Punch the accelerator on a wet street in a Ridgeline AWD and you will go. The computer is brilliant at using Torque Vectoring to put power to the wheel that needs it for the situation it is reading. Don't forget to mention that with the trim levels that have the navigation screen, you also have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto use via the USB port under the infotainment cluster. And as for the rear doors, we have discovered a "hack" where you can order the door stops from the front doors and install them in the rear doors to give you another few inches of opening for your passengers or trying to put those boxes in the rear seating area. It's a blast to fire up Truck Audio while working outside on the yard and that will work with whatever input, radio, phone, you could even go radical with tailgating with a TV having it's audio route thru the bed speakers. If you are considering a midsize truck and don't plan on taking it to some rock crawling mountain, give the Ridgeline a test drive before you make your final decision. Enjoy!!!

I have been driving my 2018 Ridgeline for about 9 months. I love it more than I did when I decided to purchase it. The Lane Keep Assist and the Adaptive Cruise Control features are wonderful. Just drove the truck on vacation, 10+ hours. When we got there I still had plenty of energy left to explore the beach, restaurant and Walmart. I have the Black Edition and the gas mileage is lower than the 2WD, but I averaged 22.8 mpg doing the math (the dash said 24.2). A real pleasure to drive. The only complaint I can come up with, is the wheelbase. I often find it difficult to drop it in a parking spot without a second try. Could be me. The trunk is HUGE! Plus with the back seats up I had plenty of room for all the crap we brought back. Tried out the "Sand" button on the console. Immediate pull like 4wheel low in my old pickup. I pushed the button while approaching the construction, and BOOM - pulling like an OX. Got through the sand and switched back and bang smooth sailing right now. I haven't figured out the 4 button on the shifter itself yet. Haven't had the guts to try the automatic parallel parking feature either. The monthly payment very conducive to "buyer's remorse" -- but I tell you folks, I have none. 2 thumbs up!!

@@funkmonster not everyone would want to drive or own a jeep 4x4 or 2wd. Some people are lactose intolerant, so no cheese pizza. There are soft tacos as well and vegan burgers lol. The point you're missing is, not everyone has the same NEEDS. Not everyone goes 4wheeling but you see lifted, big tire, with aftermarket wheels on 4x4 jeeps and trucks that are nothing but pavement princesses because the owner just wanted the looks. You see shiny unmolested trucks everywhere with empty bed and not towing, unless you're stuck under a rock, never owned a vehicle, or never possessed a driver's license.

  • @funkmonster

    @funkmonster

Squid Usn but then if you don’t want a 4x4 then why buy a Jeep? If you don’t want to haul stuff, why buy a truck. There are hundreds of cars and crossover vehicles that one could buy if they don’t want to do those heavy duty things. To buy a truck intended for soccer momming just seems odd to me. Pick the right vehicle for your needs, I agree. Which means, don’t buy a truck if you don’t need one. Buy a Honda Civic. If you want more room and the ability to haul stuff buy a Honda Pilot. If you want to go off-road buy a Jeep or a Tacoma. There’s a car for everything and everybody.

But the new 18 tundra I bought is very updated since my 2007. I think the adaptive cruise works better than the ridgeline. It has blind spot, lane keep, ped detection, automatic braking. I miss the fuel economy of the Honda. BUT the the automatic air is very superior to the Honda. I agree it’s dated , but it has no problems, and the engine is very powerful, only telling all this in case your wondering why I went back to Toyota. I checked out the f150, it was 11,000 more dollars. The gm midsize twins very uncomfortable. I hope the all new 2021 tundra will be great, we will see.

I wish the front sensor would work to sense cars in front when parking. Even better if it had a front camera. I kind-a wish it had the 9-speed but guess the 6-speed is more reliable. I wish it had an heads-up display. Recommend it for families and home-owners. It is not made for serious off-road. I don't know how it would hold up for heavy everday construction use. Might be better with a body-on-frame. For me, Perfect!! Black 2019 RTL-E

Saying the Ridgeline is not a "real truck" because of its unibody construction is not a valid argument. It is not the same as a typical passenger car unibody. It has a frame like a traditional BOF truck, but instead of being bolted on, it is integrated with the body. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is also unibody. The RL is an unconventional truck, but it is practical for most truck buyers.

picked up a 2018 one in dec and it fulfills all my requirements. i specifically did not get a 4wd due driving on almost completely paved roads in southern california and this vehicle's 4wd capability is considered one of the weaker ones in this segment. as low voltage installer, i do not tow anything heavy and i rarely load up the vehicle to it's max weight capacity. it has more than enough room to fit all my ladders/tools/equipment and i love having my large collection of drill bits being stored in the trunk. all in all, it does everything i require it to do. not being a "true truck" is completely irrelevant in my situation

If there were demand, Honda would do what is necessary to fulfill customers needs by ramping up production. If they don't, customers start looking elsewhere which it looks like they already have. Take the new Ranger plant for example. They're working loads of OT on just one shift to do what they can to build what they can for demand while hiring a whole shift to ramp up production even further.

Also, just cause the displacement is 2.3L doesn't mean it's the same exact engine found in the RS and Mustang and it just being detuned. Good try though.

Ridgeline is excellent. I've been driving one for 2 weeks and I love it. I'm a chevy guy but currently own a Ram 2500. The Ridgeline is the nicest and smoothest ride I've ever experienced. With that said.....I would take my 2500 for any real work. I can tow 10000# with the Ram and much bigger payload. But when the Ram is not needed, the Ridgeline fits the bill. Speaking of bill, it is quite expensive. The one other thing I dont like is rear legroom. This truck is perfect as a company truck for a salesman or something like that. Or for a city guy that wants something different. I only get to keep mine for 2 more weeks. Next truck for me is a full size GMC. Going back to my roots.

People badmouth Honda all the time. After they drive one they buy one! After they buy one they can't stop saying good things about them. This isn't a truck for a major contractor but it is a good truck for the average guy and meets the needs of most people. Special note for those who live in cold climates - AWD is better than 4X4 because you don't need to switch it on and off at every single intersection in the winter. When it detects front wheel spin the rear wheels kick in. That was my biggest truck complaint with 4X4 trucks (can't have it in 4X4 on pavement unless its covered in snow or will cause damage to the vehicle. Its right in the manual of every 4X4 Ford, Toyota, GM, Dodge)

The open nearly to 90 degrees. They will bolt directly to rear seat doors and have clearance to improve the opening width. Can do this modification for about $25, if I remember correctly.

I understand the Canadian version having Heated seats, but why does it have the cooled front seat option, and the US version doesn't. Another item the Canadian version gets that I have not see mentioned here is the digital control panel in the back seat area for controlling the back seat climate system. I think that is nice so the back passengers do not have to ask the driver to adjust their climate settings. That is why the US model has that small self in the back of the console below the air vents, that is where the control panel goes. Also I have seen several reviewers talk about the small shelf between the heated seat controls in the front. That is the place for the optional CD player, which I think is expensive at around $300 USD. I really wish we could have these items available in the US, in the top trims or at least as an option like the CD player we can get.

Very nice pickup overall.. VERY nice steering wheel.. but the dashboard has the same problem as the Pilot's.. I wish Honda would have made a more traditional dashboard/gauge cluster... like more manual controls and oversized nobs on the dash.. To use the touchscreen you have to take your eyes off the road to use - just good old manual, simple to use controls (like oversize knobs) would have been soooo much better (and safer). At least Honda kept the very nice console shifter (instead of the terrible push button shifter in the Pilot/Passport).. and adding a traditional dial type speedometer (instead of digital) would have made this a great pickup truck..

I like the truck but there was not enough driver's seat leg room for my ostrich length legs compared to my Subaru Outback and I had to give it a zonk for that. I prefer Hondas 3.5L v6 compared to Ford Rangers I4 turbo. The mpg from the Ford is not impressive.

Ray Garduque I have a 2015 Escape with the 2.0L ecoboost, and while it is pretty preppy for what it is, I by no means think its the fastest thing in the world or that I’m saving any more gas than I would with a v8 lol. They are torquey little motors, but they are only about on par with most 6 cylinders today, and a v8 is still the best option if you want more power and torque.

You can buy a mod kit from Honda to allow the rear doors to open wider. There's a video on KZread on how to do it and the part numbers.

When you're negotiating price, make them "throw in" the back door fix for free. I did that when I bought mine about a month ago, and am glad I did. It takes less than an hour in the service bay to do.

Better than a Chevy, GMC, Dodge? Apples and oranges....the Ridgeline is essentially a minivan with an exposed ass-end chopped off. This thing cannot in any parallel universe be considered or compared to a truck. The comment comparing the Ridgeline to trucks shows the level of automotive ignorance of the average buyer.

I am sold on this truck; will be my next vehicle. The tailgate features and "trunk" was the money shot for me.... I don't need a 10k dollar motorized tailgate with grandpa step ladders. And a truck with full time AWD is hard to find unless you get a Denali and I mean I owned a Silverado that used clutch packs to do AWD and Ford does something similar.... but i just want an AWD truck that's cheap...simple and this is it.

It’s a great something. It’s created its own segment, and stands alone in it.Be interesting to see if other manufacturers see the benefit of building a vehicle that ticks the boxes of what most people actually need.Call it what you want,it’s a hit.

And so do we ranchers- I have a Ridgeline working on a cattle ranch in central Washington. Try it. You might like it. The Achilles heel of this truck is the ground clearance- too low as it will get buried in extra deep snow. It's best design feature is the AWD-, especially beneficial on a typical mid-size working truck. Handles typical mud and snow as well as a Tacoma with a minimum of fuss. The cross- country comfort and rideability is a bonus. I like the Ridgeline because I didn't have to purchase 2 vehicles (Truck/ SUV).

@skankhunt42 I own the ranch. I own a Ridgeline. I also own a '87 F-150. Not 4WD, though. That real truck can get stuck in the wet pasture when the irrigation water puddles - the minivan Ridgeline doesn't.

I want a truck but no need for a big "real truck". I've been eyeing the Ridgeline, Tacoma, and Frontier. I keep leaning towards the Honda. Gives me everything I'm looking for, but can be pricey. Waiting on the 2021 Frontier to have a look.
