I thought I might comment twice. Once for each upload of the same video. For newcomers, comparing to the west or another vacation, prices in Thailand will seem very cheap. Transportation, hotels and food, just to name a few. If you've never gone to Thailand, just go. Your adventure awaits! Your adventure awaits!

Airfares are coming down compared to this time last year, in 15 months time we plan to move to Thailand, maybe Hua Hin??? when you say about saving money by cooking at home which is very true, my wife is thinking more about preserving our health, as streetfood is cooked with god knows how much Salt, Sugar and especially MSG etc. A good steak with salad and chips at a local pub in Melbourne can be around AUD$30-$40.

At lot of this is perspective. Certainly when I talk about Thailand to people who have never been east they have this mindset where everything is ridiculously dirt cheap. Its not helped by so many youtubers putting out videos of people living it large supposedly on $1000 a month. There's also an issue with beer prices if you like to drink. As Peter says B180 in a flash agogo is fair enough. However most establishments regardless of quality will simply go 'if the plaza can charge that so can we'. I drink pints I wouldn't dream of paying £5 for half a beer at home.

Airfares are the problem. If you divide a ten day stay into your air ticket price , you will find it is your highest daily expense. Just saying.I am still working so only have limited time. For the rest , it is still good value.

"Thailand is more expensive than it used to be" and "Thailand is way cheaper than my country" aren't mutually exclusive statements, they aren't even a counter argument to each other, they are two different points entirely.

Some things are even more expensive or at least at the same level. But the daily life is much cheaper such as food, drinks, clothes, renting etc. I live in Nonthaburi (Bangkok area). You can easily live with a Budget of 1500 € as a couple. We don't have to pay rent because the house is paid off.

I remember 3 - 4 years ago the same breakfast at the same place for 160 baht .... restaurant food has increased significantly ... even at the local outdoor markets you see the price has increased - go to Makro, Villa and the price of a lot of items are just ridiculous ... BKK - the restaurant prices are way over the top .... coming from a guy that has lived here for over 23 years .... 180 baht for small beer ... lol .. lol .. lol

I had a big final night at one of the "ex-pat" cheaper bars in Pattaya. I have a Thai partner already so was just having a fun night drinking and playing pool. Ended up shouting 20 lady drinks (I didn't realise it was that many until I saw the bill) and the final bill was 3000 baht. In Australia it would have cost me more than that just drinking by myself on a night out. I had several ladies very happy having a laugh and playing pool with me, I thought it was a decent value night in the end for what it was.

Beer can be expensive but not like £6.50 like in UK in some bars. Transportation cheap, accommodation still great value for £20 per night, 20 pence on baht bus, but other things can be expensive such as steak and wine etc but they are a treat back home anyway. Thanks for your video....m.very balanced and informative once again 👍

Perfectly stated Pete and I totally agree. Yes Thailand is still cheaper that my own country but a lot more expensive than it used to be in real terms. For example, years ago I could spend $100 a day which in my countries terms back then was about $200 plus dollars today. Now in Thailand for the same amount of fun and entertainment would easily be about +$500 a day. So yes Thailand has got more expensive due to many reasons but still reasonable value.

Great video, Peter - these are very difficult to make I'm sure because the answer to this question is always "it depends". It depends on where in Thailand, what you like to do, what you like to eat/drink, etc. Even though I've been to Thailand 25+ times over the years on holiday, I did a LOT of research before moving here (much of the info provided by your excellent videos). I did a VERY detailed budget, and after living here for 3 months now I'm spending about 30% less than I thought I would. I live in Jomtien (near Pattaya) and prices are a lot less here than in Bangkok. Compared to the US, where I'm from, prices are SIGNIFICANTLY lower for virtually everything. I would say I'm spending 20% of what it would cost me to live in Las Vegas, where I moved from. However, I do agree with you that prices in Bangkok are noticeably higher than I remember from 5-10 years ago.

Some European counties have had depreciation of its currency against the Baht. Thats a factor that adds to inflation. Hotels. Many 5 star properties charge x2 compared to 7-8 years ago. Partly because of an increased demand. Good for Thailand🙂. Sofitel soi 13-15 is one example, and executive lounge access is even more expensive then before, due to the high cost of food.

Groceries in the UK are far cheaper and you get more value for your money. ALDI , LIDL and other budget stores are the best. In Thailand the same groceries in Lotus will cost you over double. I did a comparison when I went back home last year. I paid 20 pound a week for food. about 800 baht. However after I came back and got the same stuff my bill was 45 pound plus. Milk , cheese , meat etc. is cheaper in the UK. Great beers in ALDI and LIDL from Europe for pound / couple pound a bottle.

I am a regular visitor to Thailand and post Covid prices in Thailand have definitely gone up. I am based in New Zealand and the prices of airfares flying with Qantas have doubled post Covid and they haven't come down at all. Yet I just booked a one way internal flight from Phuket to Bangkok and it only cost me 2300 Thai Baht. I have found the prices of drinks in places like Soi Cowboy have certainly increased, even Starbucks is expensive, more expensive than in New Zealand. The food is still reasonable and we had a really nice meal with all the trimmings at an Indian restaurant in Krabi for the two of us for 1350 baht. Yes things are more expensive post Covid in Thailand, but it is still much cheaper than back here in New Zealand, where inflation is 7%, mortgages are at 6.5%, insurance, council rates, electric power and gas are all very expensive here. I was in Bali 6 months ago and found Bali cheaper than Thailand.

I also live here. Most things (but not all) are cheaper than back home, but prices has gone up. Especially night life in Bangkok. So I don't hang around in beer bars, when I go out I like to go night clubs. Pre covid it used to be possible to get a bottle of vodka in most clubs for between 2-3000 thb, and a sangsom 1000-1500 thb. These days it's around 5000 thb for a vodka and if you can even find a sangsom it's usually around 2000 thb. This is still of course a lot cheaper than back home for most people (it's not even possible to buy a bottle in the clubs in my home country) but prices are 50-100% higher than in 2019-2020. I don't bar fine girls or meet with freelancers (before anyone comments "yeah sure buddy", I have a girlfriend) but friends that do that on occasions say that these prices are alos a lot higher than pre covid, they believe it's because of onlyfans.

In 2023, I paid at least $3000 for one week in Scotland, a hotel, 4 rounds of golf not including airfare. I’ll be traveling annually to Thailand because the dollar goes a long way there.

One of the great things was how cheap Thailand was. Over the years things have changed, but Thailand is still cheaper than the UK, especially if you stick to Thai food and budget Travel. I remember in my last Trip, taking the Train from the Malaysia border up to Bangkok. It was super cheap. I went to Ayutthaya and Kanchanaburi by local transportation and it was not only beautiful but also not expensive. If you're gonna be partying then that's where Thailand isn't so cheap.

Under $100 to most places. Actually, my prem. econ. from SFO to BKK is still reasonable. But round trip next time. I don't drink, but have spent much $ on the bar girls. I dont see it as a scam. The non judgemental fun is worth it. But not in the U.S. for sure. (And the obesity plague there.). Yes, I have taken the girls to Issan. (Dying dad and families). But saw more of Thailand than the bar stool "experts". One time a mamasan gave me some $ whein I got really srupid. But paid her back when next check came. Looking well mate - papa lor mak! Spot on with the price comparisons. It would seem to be getting expensive for people that live in Thailand but for people on holiday it’s a lot cheaper and better value than their own countries. I’m from England, I live in Australia and I visit Thailand often.

Both arguments are valid dependent on your perspective. A lot of this has to do with your exchange rate. However I do think the thing with Thaiand is that the whole package (UK airfare included) used to be cheap to the point you could do LOS for the same price as Europe. This really isn't the case for the back pack / gap year crowd anymore. The demise of the British Airways route has added about 50% to my airfare

Getting expensive but the real problem is pollution there, damn the air in Bkk really smells and burning. I hope they can ease the problem in the future because it is unbearable and I really love to go there.

Hi Peter. Aifares from the UK may have come down but certainly not from many other origin. I have no direct flights causing both a price issue and the flight duration can be excessive with layovere. I am finding that if you are extremely flexi with travel dates you can pack and leave within 24 hrs at a steal if flights are not over booked.

Hi Peter, good topic to cover. I think prices have crept up a little over the years, but the biggest thing in my opinion is exchange rates aren't what they used to be in the past, like in 2008, I could get about 60 Baht per £ GBP (now only about 45). But Thailand certainly offers fantastic value if compared to the western world needless to say!

Expense is "relative". I remember prices back in 2002 to 2004 along with my visits over time. Costs are relative to home or other countries. After disastrous COVID Costs were up quite a bit to try and make up for losses. Costs are "relative" to quality of establishment one visits or frequents. Some bars are relatively cheap for drinks. Cheap and not luxurious bars. Restaurants can be either costly or cheaper depending on "class" of restaurant. RELATIVELY is not a one eyed subject.

Prices in the UK are very high now, yesterday we went to the beach in Wales, a beer was 6.50 nearly 300 baht right, looking forward to getting back to Thailand soon for a long time. Comparably Thailand is still cheaper almost everything, though total living costs have to be factored in, health insurance, visas, high costs of imported goods you might want, also clothing and supermarket food is very reasonable in the UK. Anything that involves labour costs though is way way cheaper in Thailand, god knows how much an hours decent massage in the uk is for example 70 quid maybe?. I often stay upcountry, not for everyone but the lifestyle suits me, and costs are extremely low, I can work remotely and save 80% of my income easily,

There is actually quite a lot of scamming and racist behavior going on in Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy. I have a wide range of friends and some weren't allowed to enter due to race, insanely pushy mamasans, bar girls that waste your time at the hotel and rush back to bar and so on. Also bill padding is extremely common in cowboy.

Also, the issue with westerners tipping too much is that it makes some Thai people not want to serve Thais. This is especially true in nightlife areas with taxis.
