Tenchi Muyo didn't just popularise the harem genre it created it. Also your right about them throwing everything into it. It's origins began with the crew that made it working on Bubblegum Crisis. At the time they thought the show was too dark and wanted to ease back on that with some lighter elements. They were told no and just saved up all their ideas and threw them into this.

Ryoko having observed Tenchi since his childhood may have been deemed creepy by some in Western audiences, but at least it provided some explanation for her fondness for him, unlike later harem shows, which often don't even bother to try to give a real reason for the romantic enthusiasm for the male main character. I always appreciated that. Also, Tenchi is strong and resourceful when it counts, which made him a bit different from later hapless MCs. While I realize that many Americans may have grown up with these OVAs thanks to later appearances on local TV, let's not forget that the American anime market in its infancy was mostly just an afterthought to Japanese creators at the time, if even that. So these works were generally, Mad Dog included, just made for a Japanese audience, which is part of their unadulterated charm, questionable content and all.

Fun fact the animators of Tenchi was so honi they made hentai spin offs which is kinda canon to the Tenchi OVA's. The more unfiltered 90's versions are the better versions because it's not holding back and not treating you like a kid reason why back in my day the 90's kids like me love watching anime because it treats you like an adult, from the violence and fanservice there's always something behind it story wise not just for show or shock value.

You must have missed Tenchi Muyou! GXP Paradise Shidou Hen from last year. it's a OVA that links the GXP light novels with the Paradise War light novels. Kajishima Masaki (the primary TM!R creator) also tends to release 1 or 2 Doujinshi a year since the 90's including the -IF- series which details the canon kids of Tenchi and Senia. Fun fact nearly all Kajishima's works are related. Photon is set in the distant past of Geminar, Dual takes place about a billion years ago and was the founders of the great prehistoric civilization mentioned in TM!R ep 13 and Agga Ruter. The cast of GXP are direct reincarnations of the cast of Dual. Even his other Adult works Masquerade and Anata Dake Konbanwa are connected as the MC of the Doujinshi Tenchi Muyo -If- "Nanika o Sodateru nante Shougakkou Irai da (Kari)" Sono Ni goes to the school from them and much of the cast shows up in it and the book it self seems to have some connection with the juarian tree ships.

I still never understand why that seems to be kind of a low key thing in anime. Suggesting that kids want to grow up to marry their parents and it's on some adorable juvenile stuff. But realistically that's a weird suggestion that they turn into a bit of a reoccurring meme in the genre as a whole. Like I get it kids love their parents but like I literally never heard in reality af a child saying something like; “I want to marry Daddy when I grow up”, If it's someone's daughter usually. And the parents just laugh at all like it's normal and something to ignore. But in anime they kind of take it to an almost extreme in the suggestion like that kid will literally grow up waiting for the day they turn 18 so they can marry their own blood related family member. And why the hell that is such a popular subgenre of the franchise I'll still never understand.

There’s something about each original voice actors that NAILED it, ayaka I won’t get over how she maintains a royal accent without it being some cliche British accent lol I LOVE TENCHI! I don’t… love GXP but I SUPER ULTRA love war on genmar and KENSHI! something about the first 3 seasons of the ova art feels so right, and war on g is also a great style. GXP and etc,,, less much

I would probably rank "Record of Lodoss War" higher, but I'm biased here since I do love me some D&D-style high fantasy. And now I'm in the mood to re-watch some 90s anime. Thx

tenchi muyo is nice, you should check out the latest seasons that where added several years back, they got good graphics quality to and the story has realy been fleshed out alot more including all of the tenchi muyo universe except the supernatural highschool season, they erased that from the storyline because it did'nt work with all the other stuff to well also check out the spinn offs, their great and a fun watch if your into fantasy/sci-fi stuff.

Man the early 90's was the Anime Golden Age. Anyone else remember the days of copying anime onto VHS and swapping it on tapes through the mail? I would trade tapes with people all over the country. It was a real underground activity. I actually started to lose interest in anime once you could get it at any Blockbuster or Suncoast video store... it lost it's illicit appeal. :D
