Can you inform us of how many cold calls you done a day on average during your first year as a SDR?

I’ve been in tech sales as a sales engineer (11.5 years) and now enabling technical sellers for 1.5 years. I absolutely love it! I am a nerd, who loves to study, implement and present technology solutions to help businesses reach their strategic objectives. But I have always done what I love to do - study and apply real solutions.

All advice welcome: I am considering a switch to tech sales but I'm torn because I'm a few years away from gaining enough experience as a data engineer to return anytime without starting from scratch if sales doesn't work out. On the flip side, there are lucrative opportunities in sales now, and some friends are already thriving. I'm contemplating seizing the moment, but it feels like a hasty decision without a career safety net. Any thoughts?

Out of the hundreds you've helped get into tech sales, how many lasted a year? How many got the coveted six figure job? I've seen tech sales pushed really hard over the last few years, especially by bootcamps, but I've also seen tons of people not make it. For most people starting out tech sales is making 100+ cold calls per day and risk of losing your job if you don't hit certain metrics. Yes you can climb the ranks and become and AE but even that can be a very demanding job where you're carrying a quota that if missed can get you the axe. So while being a SDR and making cold calls will be an income increase for many people, I do hope people looking to go that route do their research and are honest about if it's for them. A year ago I met a lady who went 30k into debt for some bootcamp and when she finally found a job as an SDR he lasted less than 6 months.

You're essentially asking about the outcomes of teaching people to ride bikes: did they continue riding, buy bikes, or get injured in falls? It's important to consider whether a career is right for you and if you're determined to make it work. Often, those who don't persevere tend to limit themselves and make excuses. Your success depends on your own willpower, not the failures of others. In the world of tech sales, success isn't immediate; it takes time to excel in any career. Starting somewhere is the first step towards achieving your goals.

It’s easy to see the things you want to see! What are you focused on? The negatives, because you can find that in any space. How do you know if you’ll like something or will be good at something if you don’t try? For everyone of that example of the lady’s that you spoke about, there are multiple others who picked the right bootcamp, at the right price, and got in and changed their life. For things to change you have to change. Which often means doing something different. Over time you will get better, if you hang in there. (This is for the people who read you comment and got discouraged, you seem to already have a closed mind)

Can you do a video on being a SDR Rep and working an additional full time job? Would it work? Or is being a Sales development representative too much of a work load?

Being an SDR should be your full time job if you want to succeed and truly learn sales skills.

Had I not got into cybersecurity, tech sales was my second choice. I already have a business that focuses on sales, so I didn’t want to be overwhelmed. I actually enjoy cybersecurity/cloud sector.

It says that the average salary is around 60-80k. You seem like an outlier in terms of your earnings. I can easily make more as a software engineer or IT specialist. So why choose tech sales over that?

Average salary for an entry level SDR/BDR role is 60/80k. Look up the salaries for Account executives, enterprise account executives and SLED account executives. Software engineering salaries do not compare unless you are level 8 or above at Apple, Microsoft or META, Netflix etc....

One solid way to do it is join a software company as a consultant who implements solutions at customers. While you do it, do everything to understand how the technology you implement helps a customer meet their strategic objectives. Practice communicating the strategic objective and how the solution works in an easy to understand language like you are talking to a 5th grader. Once you are able to do this a few times at different customers, your natural progression will move to becoming a sales engineer and then a move to technical sales.

I have worked in Sales for 10+ years doing AM and BDM in Telecoms and have 5 years of IT Recruitment experience including running my own company I am moving away from IT recruitment into tech sales currently expecting a few BDR/SDR offers and potentially 1 AE offer I am expecting a few offers from different companies any advice on how to decide which one? Just go with my gut feeling or any advice? One company sells security software to MSP and I might get an AE role with them but they seem to have a bad reputation online so wondering if its best to go with a lower role with better chance to progress in a good company or take the higher paying AE role Sorry for all the info
