Is TAG Heuer A Proper Watchmaker? | Watchfinder & Co.
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Back in the early 1900s, racing timer manufacturer Heuer decided to do something pretty revolutionary. Where watches had previously been able to record up to an 1/8 of a second and in rare cases 1/10, Heuer saw an opportunity to push that all the way to 1/100 of a second, ten times the accuracy. The resulting 1916 Mikrograph secured the manufacturer such prestigious timing responsibilities as the Indianapolis 500 and F1-but it took the watchmaker almost a century to be able to recreate it. Why?

For those whining about how TAG “ruined” Heuer, read Jack Heuer’s autobiography. Heuer in the 1980s was a company in dire financial trouble that produced some hideously ugly quartz monstrosities - the glory days of the Autavia and Carrera had long since passed by 1986. It’s a testament to the skill of those running the show that within the space of a few years they’d turned TAG Heuer into one of the most recognised watch brands in the world.

Perhaps so but they still have some work to do to build a reputation on a par with some of their better peers, such as Zenith, JLC, Bulgari etc. I bought a £6,500 Monaco LS and the hand for the chronograph hour sub dial fell off….completely unacceptable quality control failure…

I read the autobiography. Very inventive watch brand. The first automatic chronograph with the crown on the left side. The try to put Steve a Monaco on his wrist. Try to get a Heuer on the wrist of a Kenedy. The friendship with Willy Breitling. Much respect to Jack Heuer. A tru icon.

They already was one of the most recognised brands, more so than any of the others before and after Tag was added apart from Rolex. Only watch collectors would know brands other than Tag, Omega and Rolex back in the 80s, 90s and early 2000's and only the pandemic has boosted the sales of the likes of Zenith, Tissot and other brands in that same market share and all because of channels like this that show there's more than just a few good watch brands.

Me too. I own the day date 41mm Carrera that I got with a decent 30% discount from the AD. Watch keeps time well (+1s/d) and the fit and finish are still flawless after 2 years on my wrist. Tag may not be the most prestigious luxury watch, but for the price I paid I’m very satisfied with it… watch snobs be damned. Lol
Absolutely fantastic watch...Shame it's not a regularly available piece.
Yes. They are fine. The seiko movement misidentification/ rebranding, the huge advertising push in the 90’s and many of their watches, today, are awesome.

Tag is one of the best selling luxury watches for a reason. They have more heritage than Rolex. The tech and mechanics in their watches is patented. Their connection with Le mans, F1, Ferrari etc is unrivalled. Never mind all the celebrities and famous people associated with the brand from the like of james dean. Ryan gosling brand pitt, DiCaprio etc etc. Plus they're owned by the biggest luxury brand in the world Louis vuitton Moet Hennesy.

I can watch this guy video all day long. I love my Carrera :D
I wonder if they could have used like a planetary gear set and clutches not unlike the automatic transmission in a car, but in reverse. Kind of like where the power comes from the tires and tries to spin the engine to be able to step up the gear ratios. Like a super overdrive. Probably wouldn't have had the torque to drive that though.

I'm wondering, what prohibit to gear up the second hand so that it gets a full turn each second? I can only think about that when starting the stop watch it can have a slow start due to the inertia involved into making the chrono second hand to reach the correct pace, am I right?

TH has a mixed bag in their stable, some pretty good pieces, some just ok quartz watches which you would be better off and save money with a better Citizen Ecco Quartz. I own one TH, the recent Autavia, got a good discount and I like it. I'm sure some will say, you can get an Oris, or Longines for about the same, and true. The above Chrono is great, but even if I had the money it wouldn't be for me, I'd just and maybe in the future get a Zenith for far less money. I have several chrono's from Tissot to an Omega Sapphire Sandwich and don't really want another at this time. Still as usual, excellent blog. And FWIW my brother in law has a circa 80's Tag Quartz that works perfect, just battery changes. Really don't like it's looks, but he does and that fine.

Where to sell tag heuer watch ?
I need the track in the Background 🙈
Does this mean no hand winding for the regular watch movement?
@jimmyjay122

Yes. The time keeping movement is a self winding automatic with its own 42 hr power reserve. Hand winding is only required for the chronograph’s 90 min power reserve.

I bought an F1 Caliber 5 as my first automatic watch while I was waiting for the arrival of a Tudor Pelagos and honestly I thought the price was fairly reasonable (just over $2000 CDN from my local AD). The bracelet clasp is pretty low rent but generally I think the watch is pretty good. I’ve since purchased two different Autavia’s, a chronograph 02 movement and their newest Caliber 5 Autavia and I’m digging both of them. I know the movement isn’t that special (although the Caliber 5 in the Autavia is COSC) but I think the watches are well put together. Each to their own tho.

A brilliant achievement, two movements in one makes complete sense. To keep the mechanical watch wearable however is not that easy. Full marks for this. In life I'm not sure that a button activated by one of those human ape descended lifeforms would be accurate enough to hit the start button at exactly the right time or stop it to within what this watch is capable of recording. I love it regardless.
It looks so weird to me that you have to wind the chronograph before the 30 min runs out.
