Is SRAM Powertrain The Ultimate E-MTB Transmission?
Спорт
SRAM'S new Auto Shifting Eagle Powertrain promises to rewrite the rules on how easy E-MTB riding can be. How have they done it and just how mind bendingly awesome is it to ride?
Thanks to SRAM for the test bike loan and Giro Cycling UK, Peaty’s Products, Crud XL Fenders, Torq Nutrition and Hebtroco for supporting the channel,

Great review. I want one! It'll be interesting to see what Specialized does next.
Great review as always. Looking forward to learning more about the new Megawatt and the Propain 👍🏽

transition are on it as well
Looks like great technology and a really interesting review - what is equally impressive to my mind is how SRAM managed to coordinate numerous independent bike commentators, reviewers and loads of bike review platforms (many just rehearsing the press release) all to release their reviews of this system today, thats some work in itself but also a fascinating insight into bike marketing, I hadn't really noticed and linked how this happens and works before and of course SRAM will not be unique in this sense

There’s a brilliant article on @nsmb.com about how good SRAM marketing is but it’s certainly been interesting to see the different views on Powertrain
Mobility Bikes just reached a new level, it's a bit of a video game bike one where you only need to turn up to turn the bars! Looks fun but not sure it's a good direction to go in?
I said yesterday that I'd settle for a new titanium trail hardtail but this is just brilliant, apart from the cost😉
Fascinating stuff, you will have to do a race and let us know your thoughts again.

Yes, that would be really interesting and I'm definitely going to try and get a demo bike on long term loan to try more stuff on it
Which model Giro helmet is that Guy? Thanks. And yes pretty amazed that this tech works as well, as intuitively as it does. I was skeptical, living on Dartmoor you go from downhill high gears around the corner to a wall and have to scramble through 7-8 gears to be able to cope. But you gave it a good robust workout there and it seemed to handle it all. I wonder if long term this will wear out the mech quicker from so many changes and under load?
I need this so i can ride past folk on non e bikes and get called even worse names for not having to even change gear lol
It is when you map your route onto your garmin/komoot and it changes gear in advance based on the upcoming terrain... I mean, its not for me. I"m more interested in analogue but csn still appreciate the technical expertise

You obviously have no idea how IT works, please educate yourself ASAP it's 2023 and time to wake up you are already around 17 Years behind ffs.
There is a fine line now between just throwing the e-bike out and using a proper electric motorbike
Surprised that this is Brose motor, after some issues with 5K eBike - twice - I am concerned that this tech change is quick, but not supported long-term :(.
I'm am doubtful about the result of so many gear change instead of variation of cadence ! But this system is a Think About for some reason !
Mega- mega watt . All sounds expensive . But great tech advancement . Trails look great - nice natural techy stuff - where in the world are they ?

My usual test trails at Stainburn in Yorkshire. SRAM have been very smart using Nukeproof and Propain as launch partners as they’re likely to be really well priced compared to Trek/Spesh etc. though I’m sure you’ll see some silly money builds soon as well
does it have a gyro to measure incline and decline?
@GuyKesTV
10 ай бұрын
It does have a tilt sensor, torque sensors and accelerometers but they’re not integrating them into the algorithm until they’re totally sure the basic system is sorted.
Can yu switch system off and change gear manually as an option?
@GuyKesTV

yep, on or off, or you can over ride in auto shift with the buttons anyway
How did they manage to catch up with shimano's auto shift tech so quick?

The only thing holding me back is the S Mag motor, I'm not convinced the belt is fit for purpose @ 90nm. That said, if you consider the Brose motor roadmap i.e. their development of the Brose Drive 3 system (releases 2024) which ditches the belt and provides 410% assistance plus 814w battery. That's the game changer for me. So I'm holding back until SRAM adopts the new Brose Drive3 system as their new powertrain.
Does it make riding more fun for the people that want to buy one ? That’s all that matters.
coming with flight attendant too?
Bikes are diverging at a greater pace than ever. What is missing is a gear box with semi-automatic transmission but Pinion and your credit card have this covered.

What’s it like when the battery is flat? Does it become unassisted and loose the auto and coast features, so reverts back to kind of normal eagle AXS shifting?
@GuyKesTV
10 ай бұрын
Basically yes, you still have two hours of conventional shifting even with a totally flat battery
What if the batteries die, or there is some form of electrical fault. The traditional way is easy to fix, identify and solve, and if you are on the trail there is still hope of getting out in some form. Electricity and bikes don't mix, and if you think there are any issues with the drivetrain just wait until an ebike catches fire and burns down your riding area.....just watching the video there is no reason with that flat terrain you need a motor at all.
It's miles behind the new pinion stuff imho .

@@GuyKesTV I must admit I do more long bike packing trips & don't race ,I use a belt drive as I just like the reliability ,I do wonder what the difference in drag is once you have the sram cracked in mud .

@@kevindean9613 I’ve been riding T-Type hard for months now, and it’s still feeling really good. Obviously lube dependent though and having a motor definitely overshadows the marginal power losses of a gearbox. Let’s hope they get something into the real market soon as the suspension action on an old Zerode I had was insanely good and I loved the clean simplicity

have you seen the new pinion with the motor all built into the same housing as the gear box , I see that loads of frame manufactures are signing up with them . I used a Sram GX on a Lejog trip & I must admit it didn't let me down , except the clunking gear change noise really got on my nerves lol .....On another subject I really appreciate the route reviews you do with such enthusiasm & historical knowledge , makes me get out there . @@GuyKesTV

Next week mate….
Autoshifts seems nice but it fails on where it matters and needed most. you know... those sudden 10, 15% gradient incline where you gear is from the highest and you need to rapid downshift like at least 3 to 5 gears. It still makes those terrible gear crushing sound which I do all the time for free.

@GuyKesTV I have a couple... just feel that tech like this although very cool just takes away the engagement with the bike and trail. I'm sure it rides wonderfully but part of MTB is making those decisions for lines, what gear to be in etc....yourself
@GuyKesTV
10 ай бұрын
@@phantombigballs8165 I totally agree that’s all part of the challenge / reward equation for most riders. But we’re increasingly looking at a rider demographic - and society in general - who want more reward with less challenge and that’s who this system is for. We all draw our line somewhere in terms of how much help we want even with stuff like grippy tyre choice etc. This is basically just a bigger version of that sort of enablement I guess?
I’ll never get used to motor noise.

The real problem starts when there is no noise the E-mtb is affordable to everyone and not much heavier than a regular one. I already can't Mountainbike in peace with my Scotts and specialized Stumpy Bikes anymore since 5 years. And every walk with my sled dogs (Husky and Samojede) where I "walk" with 7km/h from 300m elevation up to 800m every day in my life since 25 Years I have those e-mtb in front and in the back every couple of minutes. Fullpower E Bikes and ZERO skill and no helmet. 7 years ago I was alone, and once each week there were some horsriders that I did encounter. I really fucking hate it, and the age of those guys is around 23-40......
