For the roll up doors use double bubble foil insulation attached with 3M 77 and edge sealed with aluminum tape. I have 2 layers on my door, huge difference. You can also put a self adhesive seal in the door track to slow down the draft.

What did the electric cost? I'm in the planning process for a 40×90 trying to put a budget together. This was a perfect video because I was contemplating foam but going back and forth if I wanted electrical exposed or behind a wall..

your office area looking good Kyle, since your last posts where you put the office in and made the barrel lamp. I’ve worked in a metal shop before it’s like a sweat box good shout on the foam insulation. You did struggle allot with heat in your old shop really glad the foam has helped

About 2 years ago I built a small home shop as well. 42’ x 66’ x16’ high ceiling. Mine is wood and stucco. I insulated the walls with regular fiberglass insulation and covered with drywall. I spent an additional $4500 after it was built to insulate the ceiling (fiberglass and foil stuff). When it’s 105° outside the hottest it’s been inside is 82°. I have 3 of the same shitty roll up doors as you, mine have a rubber draft stop at the top. Luckily for me the doors do not get much direct sunlight! I do have 3 roof vents and 2 windows, sometimes it’s nice to get airflow through the shop. Seems like your setup works well for you. The only thing I would recommend would be some large ceiling fans to move air. I installed 3 of the 5’ fans from home depot. They make a huge difference, but I like airflow.

Replace those roll up by a insulated overhead door. a couple of 2x6 for the framing and it's done.

You definitely made the right call on the spray foam. Consider a multi zone ductless mini split heat pump for your heat and AC. It will save you the cost of ducting and allow you to put a unit in your office area and a couple spread of through the shop.

Adding an exhaust fan on either gable end or both for that matter, above the tops of the big doors will not only eliminate most of the humidity, but it will negate any of the hot air that is getting in from your garage door that is either installed incorrectly (spaced too far away from the wall)or somebody didn't bother to install the seal kit with the doors. The doors themselves, can't put much on them because they are a roll-up door. Making them thicker from a coating will make them get jammed in the overhead housing when they go up. They do make a winter door for those that is thicker but also cost about 4 times as much as the non-insulated version.

I have a whole house dehumidifier hanging from the ceiling in my shop. It's rated at 105 pints/day. I set the humidistat at 60%. It does a good job of maintaining humidity at a max of 60-62%. FYI....your dehumidifiers will be more effective if you mount them at a higher elevation. Humid air is less dense - that's why it holds moisture. I have two 12'x10' roll-up doors on my shop. They transfer a lot of heat into the shop during the summer and leak a lot of cold air into the shop during the winter. I live in southern Louisiana where humidity is very high and temps in the summer can exceed 95F. I do not have AC in the shop, but I do have a 75,000 BTU natural gas residential central heating system that keeps the shop at a comfortable 65F in the winter.

That is where your humidity problem is coming from is if you did not insulate underneath the concrete before you poured it the moisture soaks right through the concrete and up into the inside atmosphere of your garage. You probably see moisture on your concrete as well so that is where a bat is coming from

Love that shop kyle. My buddies shop is 40x80 with half a 8ft tall second floor. Outside is metal. The inside he framed up 12ft with 2x4 walls with plastic on the back and insulation behind the drywall. Hes got one of those big ass fans i think the blades are 12ft Lol its a beast

friend etch primed ad painted the bottom of his air compressor and added a couple foot extension to the drain off a 90degree. so water wont rust the sides and bottom of the tank, then any water will run into that long drain piece vs in the tank. he made a section of piping that the air from the head run through to cool the air and allow water to condense. he added one of those cone ait filters to the inlet to the pump It really quietens the sucking noise down as well, you can save the dehumidifier water for rinsing cars after a washing with hard water to mixing with antifreeze when needed to washing floors if you have hard water so you dont get water marks on floors. for his grinding section of his shop, he got some rolls of stand up swimming pool metal he got from the metal wreckers cheap. and set it on the wall as a barrier.

My house has spray foam insulation, it was built by my father. I don’t know if it really does work that much better than just regular fiberglass insulation. I do know that when my A/C stopped working during the heatwave in July this year, it was 110 outside and during the hottest part of the day, it got no higher than 86 in the house till the A/C was repaired. Not sure how much it would be different than other insulation.

here in australia where i live it gets friggn hot 40 plus degrees 110 in the usa we use roof spin away fans it lets the heat out and cools the shed maybe try a couple on your roof might get rid of a bit more humidity. cheers from down under

Do you need to spray the roof purlins and wall girts?

Vents by the floor and closable vents in the roof will remove moisture and control temperature. To stop air flow over roller door use old conveyer belting (always available at your local quarry) hung against the roller from above. the weight will keep it sealed and will last forever!

I have a metal building with two roll-up garage doors. It's not insulated with anything, and it is absolutely unbearable in the summer. I'm in southern NC, so our climates are similar. The metal gets heated up by the sun, and just radiates heat well into the evening, long after the sun has gone down and it's cooled off outside. Even a large shop fan doesn't help, because it just feels like it's blowing hot air. Condensation is also an issue, when the metal is cool over night, then the sun comes up and heats it up. I want to get spray foam, even if it's just on the ceiling and maybe the southern facing wall, since those two surfaces see the most sun. I definitely gotta do something though.

Pro Tip: Try to keep humidity under 60% to help prevent mold issues. I’m in Richmond, VA with a similar humid climate, and want to save you the expense of mold remediation!

Concerning interior wall cover, go to a commercial drywall supply house and get a stick of hat channel. You could apply it horizontally to your wall studs, chipping away only the foam where the hat channel would go. There is no need to get the entire interior foam down to the same plane.

@thefabforums the big factor in temperature is you have LED LIGHTS it will stay cooler in the summer because of the thermal from the floor. If you had regular light bulbs the temperature would be 20 degrees hotter.

I live in South Texas on the gulf coast and humidity is always an issue. My shop is not as large as yours and I only have 1.5" of closed cell foam. I installed a mini split as part of the build and have had no issue with humidity or regulating temperature with a negligible electric bill increase. What I find is the foam also tends to absorb sound to some extent, mainly from the outside as well as adds a ton of rigidity to the building. Imagine the echo you would have if you had only metal walls.

@@francop962 My shop will be insulated a full year in May and at this point I am very pleased. The addition of the mini split controls the humidity well. I believe that if you seal your space as best you can it is much easier to control the climate inside the structure. I do have a roll-up door (uninsulated which will be changed in the future) and a walk through door and in an area that regularly has 80% humidity I am able to maintain around 60% (measured with a Kestrel) inside the structure. I have seen no bonding issues or evidence of any leaks. The enclosed area of my little shop is 20' X 24' with 9' eaves and a 4 on 12 pitch roof and I paid right at 2K to have it sprayed. Worth it is all relative. Would I do it again, absolutely!

It doesnt produce gas like smell when heated?

Get ya a couple of 150 pint a day dehumidifiers and drop ur humidity down to 40-50% and you wont have to have ur hvac cycle as much when u get it installed. Spray foam is well worth the money no matter the cost when u need to be comfortable during work.

mini split works well in Arizona. Not sure how it would work in the high humidity where you are.

Put a small hvac in there.. It will help dehumidify and make it a couple degree cooler. Lower your dehumidifier to 40 to 60. Add a second to other side. The echo is due to it being a "plastic foam" ( its epoxy based). Open cell absorbs more. Could get acustic material sprayed onto the ceiling. I have it in my house and love it. But when its done on a full structure.. It requires ventilation changes.

A curved cap over the outside top of the doors will stop wind/wet entrance and provide some shade, The bubble insulation mentioned below works. Getting rid of echo (I've built music studios) simply means filling your hard, broad spaces and especially the ceiling, with non-reflective surfaces. That can include sound panels, cloth, egg crate foam is great, flags, upholstered furniture, anything that can go on, in and around your air space that interferes with the flow of sound. What those things are is up to the individual but for larger areas, egg crate is cheaper than studio type panels and would solve the ceiling issue, for sure. Still not cheap, for sure... Don't misunderstand me, echo-proofing that much space to reduce the headache factor with machines going and to film with reasonable sound levels is a project. Creativity with soft materials that appeal to you can save you lots, like hanging a bunch of flags, etc.. Just get rid of the shiny surfaces. Having round, "clamshell" type buildings makes everything worse as it directs everything in and bounces off of you... Good luck.

Nice shop. I live in the lowcountry and it definitely gets hot in the summer. If you're closer to Columbia your in the devils armpit. I don't know that I could get a lot done in there in the month of August without something moving that air.

the foam protects the metal from condensation forming on it so then you need heating, cooling or dehumidifier to condition the space, that's the same for everyone, every building. You don't want vents you want an ERV to control the air and regulate it.

I am thinking of putting house wrap on the steel before i put the metal panels...then spray the foam on that...that waybif a panel needs to be changed out its not stuck to the foam

Many shops don't have heat. If you're not trying to keep heat in then spray foam is not worth it, but if you're heating, then it is worth it. My whole house is spray foamed by close cell foam. It's great

My shop inside uninsulated side hits 130-140°f on a 98° day Insulated side is only 92-98° depending if doors are openor not

Only problem is with the foam you lose all the shelves the side purlins provide the shop i bought was built by a paint and body guy all C purlins are open side down old shop they were up and had 1/2" of dirt in them

Do you remember when Snoopy would go into his dog house and inside there was tons and tons of room? That is the same thing your shop is doing. Outside it looks like a big shed, once inside...it looks like Howard Hughes' buildings

Yeah I just used a basic flat black. If I were to do the walls I would most like use something with some flame retardant.

Would be interesting to see temperature in the sun to know what the tin on the outside of the shop is. Definitely dig the shop.

Made my door brushes out of used fire hose and a trim piece to told them on top and sides.

Go mini splits man! You won't regret it, they were made for this application and their run cost will be much less than central both on the front and back end.

Brush seals on your doors. Did it on mine and it WORKS!

Dehumidifier does a lot to keep the temperature stable

That open cell they used in the 80s has zero eco I'm not sure of the new stuff is like

Spray foam or any insulation for that matter. Will only contain the heat or cool that is introduced within it. It doesn’t magically make a space cooler or warmer. Spray foam is just the best insulation product to contain that heat or cool. So it’s about efficiency and longevity.

Dig down and put down a layer of rigid foam insulation then concrete with in floor heating because hot air rises, put up the shop, insulate and put OSB board on the walls to screw stuff into. Keep the doors closed, don't install windows and it will be cold in the summer

Also, how high is that ceiling or the wall. I want to put in 4 post lifts and I want it high enough but not too high..like cheech and chong..lol

If you had a 10-15’ deep pond a few coils of pvc pipe, a pump and a couple radiators with fans you could circulate cool air in summer and warmer than ambient air in winter. Works great in our 1965 cinder block shop with no roof insulation, 95* all last week and was 78-85* inside so it makes it bearable in dead of summer and maintains a 50-55* when its 10-20* until i fire up the taylor stove then it gets toasty quick

you haven't deducted out what those other insulation types would have cost. even rock wool or fiberglass would have cost half of what you paid for spray foam - when you add in the additional labor that those types would have required. and as you said, the building wouldn't have been useable with no insulation at all.

I spray foam a shop 70x160 in Canada 2" thick over gravel he put radiant heat tubing then concrete 1.5 thick walls and ceiling he heating it with propane boiler $500 a month I think we pay 2 times more for propane with 4 taxes! Eerrrrr anyway average house to heat is $500 AND HEATING COSTS AIN'T GOING DOWN increases structure strength by 300%

There isnt a negative to spray foam..the negative is the owner not finishing the job and setting up proper venting

sales pitch on foam is holding a styrofoam cup in your hand,, its got near boiling water in it and yet your holding it in your hand

If you know how to shape it, spray foam is perfect for making sound proof boards.

Spray it in dc 315 and paint it

1 inch of foam would have done almost the same job as what you did with 4 inches….all that foam is good for is air tightness and thermal barrier…..so your 15k-20k would drop by 3/4 and still have the same effect. Video’s out there with value per inch of the foam…1 inch-I believe 72% barrier, 2 inch=78% barrier, over 2 inches is basically just wasting money with the foam.

R value is per inch. Closed cell has an R value of R-6.5 to R-7 per inch depending on the brand.
