How timely! I am moving to the Philippines next month (very similar temps to Thailand)... and considered the ZV-E1 but was worried about how the heat would affect the record limits... and although I could probably work around the overheating limits... it's just not a consideration I want to add to my already busy workflow. Thank you for taking the time to work thru these tests... a great info resource!

Hi Roma, Good work! Takes a lot of time to do these tests. Potato Jet did tests with H.265 and got good results too. I didn’t expect these run times to be this good so as a travel or Bcam, it’s pretty good. I shoot both Sony and Canon and have a lot of experience with R5. Here are some learnings from the R5: - for long form, using an external recorder like Atomos Ninja 5/5+ did not overheat. Battery and memory cards will run out before that. So any shooting less than 3hrs as I stopped after that - for short form, Tilta came out with a active cooling fan that helps improve abt twice the listed recording times set by Canon. Also I used a dummy battery and dummy CF Express Card (from Zitay) and had some improvement but a hassle to deal with. The Tilta was easier to manage The other YT’ers opened up the internals and added more passive copper heatsinks or have Kolari do a modification with the heatsinks I’m hoping Sony can tweak it more like Canon or Gopro to give some settings like tripod/studio indoor/high heat modes where you turn off say wifi, BT, GPS, and other modes that will generate more heat.

For outdoor shoots in sunny summer days I prefer keeping the tripod inside the car and place the camera facing sidewards to the ac air vent and set the single blower to max. I then down the driver side window glass to get clear look of outside. It protects from any direct sunlight flares & temp is obviously low due to cold air blown by car. The only con is that the FOV is sometimes limited due to door pillars so less pan and tilt freedom

X-AVC HS is the better codec because XAVC-S is simply the OLDER h264 whilte the XAVC-HS is h265. They only included H264 because to edit H265 you need a newer PC hardware that is able to encode and decode it on hardware level.

In reality these over heating number are not that bad at all!! Lots of folks want a magic camera that never overheats but it's not reality! My a7iv gets basically the same overheating performance that Roma posted in this video. The zve1 is a small camera with the same sensor as the a7siii/fx3 and the processor of the new a7rv, with little means of dissipating the heat because of its size. Seriously, who shoots 120p for more than a few moments at a time anyway?? I shoot lots of 120p with my a7siii but never more than a couple minutes at a time. The only time my a7siii overheats is at around 90 deg F, in the sun (I live in South Florida) at 120p - I get about 15 minutes before it quits. The numbers Roma is getting to me are perfectly acceptable for the zve1 given its form factor and capability. In any case my zve1 is scheduled for delivery this Friday!

well, give us an update! any overheating issues yet? ;) if you shoot outdoors at 4k60 and it's hot, does it still shut down if you shoot like a minute or 2 at a time? or is the shutting down/overheating mainly continuously shooting for longer than say 5 minutes? i mean, i don't think i've ever done a single shot longer than a few minutes when traveling, etc.

So far most of my test recordings have been inside at 24 deg c at 4k60 on a tripod. These usually last around 25 minutes. With 4k30 I get around 55 minutes before overheat. These numbers are on slightly less than my a74 under the same temp conditions at 4k30 and 4k60.

Thank you very much for this video - the results are very interesting, as I could not check the behaviour of the camera in warmer conditions here in Germany so far. But I basically don't have any problems with overheating, because I only shoot short sequences. My issue is different: I am underwhelmed my the dynamic active stabilization of the ZV-E1 to be honest. I use only Sony-lenses, shutter speed is at (minimum) 1/200. My problem: The stabilization works fine - as long as you walk straight ahead. Problems occur as soon as you pan or walk around a curve. Then strange jerks and jumps occur. I made a video, so you hopefully better understand my problem (my English is bad - sorry for that!): kzread.info/dash/bejne/mWh5rsacmau9Y6g.html Does anybody have the same issues?
