I was a kinesiology major in college and when I watched your video of this it brought back the trauma from the Bruce protocol lol. That vo2 max test is rough

Most probably its because you tend to go all out when supervised vs when doing it by yourself using just watch to measure.

This isn’t how it works.. the watches use a formula based upon a sub maximal effort. It can even use a walk for the estimate

My tested in a lab VO2 max is 59.5 and my Garmin watch usually says my VO2 max is 46-49.

My vo2max is 50 on my watch. I'm moderately fit. I ran a marathon recently in 4h10 (really hilly though). I run a sub 22 min 5K. So nothing too crazy. I think 57 seemed a bit low to me then since you're much more fit.

The most annoying thing is that after getting a lab test done you can update your HR zones but you can’t update your VO2 max 😔 you’re stuck with the Garmin estimate

so would it be more likely that the number given by a watch is lower than what a lab test would say?

Yes but other factors could play into this, the fact that a he knows a team of people have taken time and effort to rig him up in the lab could perhaps make him prone to pushing himself further on the test, for example, there is no doubt in my mind that the Lab-based test Is more accurate though.

But it’s based on your bodyweight too. The easiest way to increase vo2 max is to reduce your body weight

No, the watch gives you a result based on an average across all runners, you could be on either side of that average.

It's inaccurate because if ur training for endurance the data on ur garmin will be 80% easy/slow runs

Are your heartrate zones set and your watch reading heartrate properly? Because if it thinks you are at lower % of your max heartrate than you actually are, it will overestimate VO2 max.

  • @SuperColeman88

Yeah, but did you push yourself on your watch the same way that you pushed yourself in that training lab probably not

It is not accurate, and probably too low Competitive sportsmen don’t take numbers from garmin seriously. Only lab test can verify your real vo2 max If your garmin says that you have 53 you are in range of like 50-65

Yeah I don’t believe mine at all on Garmin because it has been the same number yet I am getting faster and running longer. Yeahh…. Not accurate at all. I’m probably in the low 50s range. it takes into account your weight, sleep, and other factors that affects VO2 max.

I don't really understand why they give you a VO2 max estimate. It's a fairly useless number, other than having something to brag about..

All things being equal, you can use your VO2 estimate as a guide for workouts and race paces. The Jack Daniels Running Guide (no, not the liquor-for those that don't know, he was a very successful running coach) uses the VO2 number to establish paces for structured workouts. As your fitness/VO2 increases, the workouts adjust accordingly.

  • @Finnspin_unicycles

@@mohare134 The Vdot number Jack Daniels uses is not quite VO2max. Either way, I think using the garmin vo2 max estimate in place of the standard: timetrial/race -> look at table for paces -> dial in the paces slightly as you progress through your training block only introduces one more uncertainty.

VO2 max in itself is a fairly useless measurement when it comes to predicting performance. High VO2 does not mean winning races at all.
