Is Sly 3 The BEST In The Series?

Ойындар

Sly 3 is a game that I have said many disparaging things about in the past. However, Sly 3 is the favorite amongst a large sum of fans. Recently, I have come to see Sly 3 in a much different light, while I have always liked it, I really think it's an incredible game just like 1 and 2. But is it the best in the series? Well, let's find out.

For roughly the first 12 years of my life, I was in a wheelchair so seeing Bently in this tricked out wheelchair helping him to do everything he needs to do in the third game, it was a big highlight to me as a kid. I had seen enough characters fall down the hole of “I’m trapped in the chair” rather than the more optimistic “the chair is something that helps me do what I couldn’t otherwise do”

You might like one of the main characters in Xtreme Ghostbusters, then. He's in a wheelchair, but still actively plays basketball with people and is probably one of the most proactive of the main cast. He's got some arrogance to him as well, but he doesn't let the wheelchair define who he is. (although he does one time play the sad card to a bunch of feds or something so he can be free to help his friends).

Sly 3 was a good close. Its theme of not obsessing over legacies or status built after generations is truly wholesome (and I don't see that a lot in games). The characters are at their peak here (especially Bentley the GOAT) and that's how it should be in the finale. One of the most underappreciated game trilogies.

I always thought the "I'm building a time machine to find out!" line was just meant to be a tongue in cheek throwaway line for laughs, highlighting that Bentley is so intelligent that even time travel isn'tabove him, but a lot of people jumped on that as a literal teaser for Sly 4. I think you summed up the message of this game perfectly

I like Chapter 2, but it had some of my least favorite missions. There's the Claw one J mentions, I find the scorpion to be pretty lame, and the crocodile one gets monotonous fast. That being said, I love the atmosphere and general look a lot, and while the MODE does get as much buildup or screentime as the other villains - Dr. M included - the stuff he does get does a good job establishing the intrigue and potential danger they would unleash if ever brought outside the Outback. All things said, Chapter 5's still my least favorite in 3 nowadays. That second half with the boat is something I went from tolerating to never looking forward to nowadays.

Sly 3 was my introduction to the Sly trilogy. I remember sitting in my neighbor's bedroom and becoming enthralled by these characters. And I remember finishing Sly 3 in my own living room, crying a bit, thinking that Sly actually had amnesia and his friendships, his struggles, his triumphs had all been wiped away. This game also molded me as a person, though it had felt weird to admit until this point. The trilogy taught me what storytelling could be. My love of creating stories stemmed from these games. Sure are they the epitome of storytelling? Of course not, but the way the story impacted me was so much more profound than any movie or book I had seen or read up to that point. Time has told that these games have left a mark on the fans in such a overwhelmingly positive way that we have never truly left them behind. We have all moved forward from our playthroughs having gained something from them. A good experience or a lifelong lesson. The love Sucker Punch poured into these games wasn't for naught. I'm perfectly content with the story ending with the trilogy. With how much I adored these games (and still do), that hardest lesson was that stories come to an end. But I've seen everything, it's time to go outside. And I will attest, having gotten my niece, nephew, and my closest friends into these games, that witnessing others experience them for the first time is like reliving the magic all over again. These reviews were wonderful, J!

I think personally a big reason why I struggle with "letting go" of the Sly trilogy to a point, despite having found the appreciation for how lucky we are that it even exists, is because there are *no* games like Sly. No alternatives to scratch that same itch, no matter how many weeks I scourge through unknown indies or forgotten AAA games. For now, I'd like to think I'm in a decent middle ground of appreciating everything we got, but also appreciating anything (respectable) we might get... like the anniversary poster. Even small things are just pure positives.

To be honest, as a kid when I played the games, I never realized the story about facing the past, dealing with the trauma, and then letting it go. I have my own trauma that just a few weeks ago I was finally able to talk and think about it. And part of the letting go and moving on is something that well... I feel that I need to do to... I just have no idea what to do and that's kinda scary.

Sly 3 was the first Sly game I ever played, & I can say confidently that it’s my personal favorite. My only problem is the very end, where it feels like they’re are just throwing EVERY single thing at you. The plane, the raft, the fucking RC car, the stupid Guru shark thing, Demetri’s stupid deep diving segment that you need Ultra Instinct to get passed, it’s just a bit too much. I get they were going for the whole “team effort” thing, but there are ways they could’ve done that without it feel like some asshole named Larry said “Why don’t we just use the rest of our assets at the end of the game ?” & then some other asshole named Tom said “Oh that’s a great idea Larry !”

The way I see Bentley's musing about his place in the gang is that he's merely pondering. From his position, he finally managed to get Sly into the place he wanted to be, through many trials and tribulations in bringing more people together for that task. The grand goal of Sly 3 is completely for Sly's benefit. So, after it's achieved, and he gets a moment alone with Murray, he simply thinks about his place in life. He wonders what it would be like if it was the worst situation possible, that he and Murray are just being used by Sly. And, to me at least, wondering what life COULD be, better or worse, is a natural thing to do when your mind is allowed to wonder. I don't think Bentley legitimately felt these things, but he wanted to question it regardless. Murray's words serve to reaffirm that life isn't what it could've been. It's much better than that.

On the one hand, I doubt Atlus took inspiration from Sly as it just feels they aren't the types to take inspiration from games that aren't RPG's and stories that aren't like, classic detective stories. On the other hand naming the Phantom Thieves the Cooper gang slaps hard, so I'll acceot this head-canon for now.

Some series do deserve a sequel or continuation, but it's great to have what we have from them, and they can stand on their own without the continuation. I played Sly 1 all the time when I was really little but it was at my cousins house because they had a PS2 and we didn’t. I remember only getting to the very end of the 1st world and never getting passed it. Once we got a PS2, my mom brought home Sly 2, which I had no idea even existed. I played it NON-STOP and finally got to the very end. I then got Sly 3 and just absolutely loved it. The character development from Sly 1, to Sly 2, to Sly 3 was insane. I loved Sly 3 because of the mature tone that it conveyed, almost like Sly had grown up throughout the games and he’s finally ready to give it all up to live with Carmelita. I remember dreaming about what Sly 4 would be like and how they would finally come out with a new Sly game and then Sly 4 actually came out and it was a huge punch in the gut.

Sly 3 being made in a year is honestly pretty impressive. In some ways it is just Sly 2 with some changes, but they really went all in with the gameplay for Sly 3 imo. Each area had a new mechanic or minigame at some point, and still had every bit of character as in Sly 2. In terms of story I still love Sly 2 more, but for gameplay I'd probably pick Sly 3.

I'm glad you actually started to see some more of the hidden side. I wondered about it myself when I first played the game back in the day. I was 15 when this game came out but I didn't put it all together till I was in college. That was when I saw that they wanted new challenges and new ips like Infamous and eventually Ghost of Tsushima. And at the time I was also looking forward to the fun of playing the next Sly game. I won't deny I was a little upset about that cliffhanger. But anymore, I don't think it's Sanzaru's fault. They tried to make the best sequel possible and stumbled. Not unlike a few of the stumblings of the originals. Not sure if you read fanfics or anything but you might check a good sequel one out. The author's name is EikaPrime. They've written two sequel stories including adding more ancestors.

Absolutely loved the video mate, especially the ending. Sly 3 for me was such an upgrade compared to 2. The gameplay had more variety, and while a lot of that was weird mini-games, they all felt way more polished and fun than any of the ones in 2. Also, the improvements to Bently and Murray immediately make it way more fun to play imo, as that was one of my biggest gripes with 2. When it comes to the story, I totally get where you're coming from in terms of the structure. As a narrative, I think Sly 2 is structured better, as each chapter moves the plot forward in meaningful ways. However, I see Sly 3's structure being a lot like the first games. Each chapter is relatively self contained, but they're all leading up to the final goal, and in Sly 3's case, I think it's a lot more exciting than Sly 1's. I think you hit the nail on the head with the thematic breakdown and the games ending. It's a message I wish more gamers would take on, especially with these older platforming series (Jak). It's ok for things to end. It doesn't mean you no longer love that thing, it just means it's time to move on. I of course have to draw parallels to Jak in this case. The gameplay and story telling potential was never fully realised in the Jak series. They could have easily made another trilogy before reaching the ceiling, and while it would be interesting to see what that would look like, I respect ND and the series for deciding to end it when they did. It left us with a terrific trilogy that wrapped up nicely, and left us with some great memories. It's the same with the Sly trilogy. I'd much rather a handful of excellent experiences, than a series that drags on well past its due date (Ratchet). Which is why Sly 4's existence frustrates me. Even though it is pretty damn fun, and even if the writing was good (it's not), I'd rather it wasn't made. Or if it was, leave our main cast alone, as their arcs are complete. A great idea I've heard is that it should have explored Sly's ancestors, and each chapter focuses on a different one. I'm rambling at this point, but I really enjoyed the video my guy!

The dialogue between them even implies this; they’re never fully comfortable with each other. I agree with most things about this video except for the fact that the Cooper Cave is some symbol of the Cooper family being lonely and such. If Sly 4 showed us anything it's that the Cooper family each usually had some family or friendship to them. Ninja Sly - Had his Restuarant Cowboy Sly - He got Cowboy Charisma, so he must've had some comrades he drank with and girls to court Caveman Sly - He had those animals he trained in and must've ended up finding a mate eventually since he's some lost ancestor connection of Sly and started the use of Cane. Knight Sly - Had his own order, sure it was post game, but I felt like as a Knight he probably traveled with other Knights beforehand. Indian Sly - Had his pack of 40 theives he traveled with for years, and even with the time disruptions he still had three members that stuck with him. Even in the game he was already tired of theiving and wanted to retire so it's not as though he was stuck and didn't have a lifestyle he wanted to live that he enjoyed. Taking stuff we find out in Sly 4 aside since it can be considered a retcon, I mean if they are Sly's Ancestors that mean that they all must've found somebody to be with, like Sly's dad. Granted that doesn't mean they all good dads or none were deadbeat fathers or had children as a result of one-night stands that they never looked back on till they passed(though I doubt someone like Knight Sly with his very honor-bounded personality would do such a thing on purpose and Indian Sly probably already had children they just either grew up enough to where he didn't need to care about their whereabouts.) It does show they must've had people, friends and family in their lives. I felt like the Cooper Cave and Sly's lesson that he mostly got from his father is to not let just Theiving consume his life entirely. Kinda like how every Cooper before them, they all eventually left stealing(At least, doing it for their legacy rather than for fun) behind, which would explain how their Canes and wealth actually got in the cages. With how spread out the Cooper family go, it's hard to imagine every descendent took time to travel back where their ancestor went to get their canes and wealth to put it into the Cooper Cave. I take this as a theory that all the Coopers when they were done with stealing like Sly's Dad was or Indian Sly, eventually put all their stuff in the vault and lived out the rest of their life(until Clockwork possibly killed them). Which makes Dr Monkey's death Ironic as he died in the Cave where all the ancestors decided to leave behind their stuff because he couldn't move on. I think this because in the Cave neither Sly or any of friends have any ill feelings about the cave at all, hell Sly seemed impressed with a lot of it toward the end. So it seems off to have the theme be, "The cave is depressing!" when our main characters were into it even toward the end. Hell he even left a sign that lead the gang to still be able to enter the cave. I say the bigger team is yes change but individuality then only clinging to a title or legacy or only acting because of a legacy then oneself.

Question, did you know as Bentley in this game if you completely empty a enemy’s pocket you can put a bomb into their pocket and take them out in an instant? This little feature also made its way into Sly 4 but they improved it in that one to why the guards start running like cowards when the bomb is placed in their back pockets. It is a little funny thing I found years ago and love to do

That was a nice conclusion. Sly 3's ending is so heartwarming to me. I don't remember if I was waiting for a Sly 4 when I finished Sly 3 as a kid but when it was teased in The Sly Trilogy on PS3, I was so hyped... I only played it once, on release, and never touched it again because I found it... disappointing, yeah. I should give it another try but I can't really forgive the writing of that game. (Especially what they did with Penelope) At this point I'd rather see a Trilogy Remake than a sequel... Or a reboot like Ratchet and Clank ? I hope they'll do something for Sly eventually, but I can wait, the original 3 Sly games are still there.

And for all you've shared in this video is a testament to how people & things change (for better/worse), and they should be accepted for how they are. I'm also glad you didn't bash on Sly 4 in this video, I don't know that much about the game, but I do know that it's just majorly disappointing & might just be over hated. A fitting end to an amazing adventure for both the characters and you. From the moment I was feeling nostalgic for Sa2 and put in "sonic adventure 2 review" into KZread and saw you I was instantly hooked and a few videos in I was really intrested in what these sly cooper games were but unfortunately never found the videos you did and I'm so glad that I understand it all now. I know this sounds really cringy but I love video games, my earliest memories are playing donkey king county returns on the wii with my dad, and I especially loved and appreciated story games and the history of said games but my freinds only cared for the multiplayer open ended games like minecraft and fortnite (not saying there is anything wrong with them) and they never quite understood why I sat alone following some made up story. And then thanks to me aging and you I finnally understand why I love story video games; they are interesting and deep, complex and loved by fans and the devs, I'm not saying that you alone made me understand myself, a lot had gone into it but you have played a very important role. Sly 3 is my personal favorite game in the Sly Cooper series, possibly due to it also being my introduction into the Sly Cooper series, I remember my Mum giving this game to me on my 13th Birthday, and partially worried my Mum had potentially bought me a dud of a game, basing that assumption purely on the cover of the game, but back then I played whatever game I was given or any game I could afford to buy or rent with the limited allowance I had. I played it the following day, and quickly fell in love with the game, the characters were likeable, funny and charming, the dialogue was superb, the story instantly hooked me, the levels were all varied, and fun to explore (Especially Venice, Holland & Bloodbath Bay), the soundtrack was catchy, the gameplay was really fun, and it was just so unique, there really wasn't and still hasn't been a series quite like the Sly Cooper series, combining the familiar platforming, with stealth, with open-world level design, with mission-by-mission story-telling. It's a shame such a great series has remained dormant for as long as it has, hopefully one day Sly Cooper will make a grand return, because if any PS Mascot deserves a comeback aside from Jak & Daxter, it's the Cooper Gang.

A fine ending for the finest thieves on the PS2. And nostalgia for the era when an experienced team could produce such a full game as Sly 3 in a freaking YEAR. Oh the days of yore... Anyway- I also agree that we don't really NEED a sequel per se, I just wish they could re-release it digitally or for modern platforms, much like the older Ratchet and Jak games, just to help keep them available for modern generations- that is all.

Okay, so, Sly 3 is MY personal favorite Sly game. I said this in the last vid (or maybe it was the first vid, who knows~), but I played Sly 1 and then went to Sly 3. Sly 1 was a household name, but Sly 3 was special because that was a birthday gift of mine. I had little idea what went down in Sly 2 and I wouldn't until I got my hands on Sly 2 in 2009 or so. Sly 2 is most certainly a great game, but Sly 3 is special. Is it bias? Yeah, it most likely is, but I can't help it. However, I personally think that most of the game's story being told in flashback DOES remove a good amount of tension since the story isn't being told in order like Sly 1, 2, and 4 are. Like, Episode 5's Operation/finale had a fake out where Sly got blown up by Captain LeFwee's clever trick... But we know that Sly is gonna end up in the hands of one of Dr. M's mutant experiments because the Prologue shown us so... Yeah, Sly is okay (for now). As for Bentley feeling a bit of jealousy towards Sly? That's been a thing since day one, yo~ Sly 3 didn't just make it up. Sly 1 had shown that Bentley was the ONLY member of the gang to remain at the safe house while Sly and even Murray went out in the field. Sly 2 had shown us that Bentley is deathly afraid of being out in the field, but deep down he wants to prove to others and himself that he's capable. Episode 4 is where he's definitely more confident. Throughout Sly 2, he gradually got more and more comfortable...Then the ending happened. But as I definitely said in the last vid, uh, Bentley being in a wheelchair is the best thing to have happened to him as jacked up as that sounds. Of course, Bentley wishes he could walk again, but... He's certainly made the best out of his situation. He's somehow even MORE agile in a wheelchair than on his own feet! But Sly 3 is where Bentley's insecurities are more plainly stated which the past few games made more subtle. It started with Episode 3 where Bentley felt envious that Penelope seemed more interested in Sly and it kept building up. Bentley even confessed to his insecurities to Penelope in Episode 5 and in Episode 6, hearing Dr. M's rage over his own Cooper Gang back in the day has caused Bentley to consider things. Ultimately, Bentley sticks with the gang, because they're family. I don't think Sly ever took his teammates for granted and that moment where Sly asks if Bentley and Murray would like to join him always make me choke up a little. Hoooowever, this game does unfortunately have some ramifications in regards to the sequel... The whole faking amnesia thing. I could be in the minority here but... Yeah, Sly was lying about his amnesia but... Uh, Carmelita definitely went along with it and even lied herself about Sly being his cop partner. Granted, Sly 4 DOES have Carmelita herself point out that she was lying too, but it's kind of a weird plot point given that both of them were equally lying. But again, minority. And then we got Penelope. I don't think I gotta talk about her, right? Maybe? Yeah, I'm not. I still feel betrayed. XD

Funnily enough, even though Sly 2 was technically the first game I played in the series, I remember getting really scared of the enemies and being caught as a kid which led to me only playing like 5 minutes of it before taking it back to the video rental store lol. This game was the first game I fully played through and beat back when I was in high school(?) and I ended up getting Thieves in Time a few years after it had initially come out and beating that. I remember liking this game but ultimately thinking Thieves in Time was better from a gameplay standpoint since it let me play as Sly more which was all I really wanted to do for some reason. At some point I really want to play the first two games though cause hearing you talk about the games like this definitely put me in the mood for them and the first game especially interests me for its heavier platforming focus.

Sly 3 has always been my favorite of the trilogy. Bentley and Murray are just leagues better than in Sly 2, I think all the new playable characters are fun and inject good yet consistent variety (if that seeming contradiction makes sense), the hub worlds are more smartly designed than many of Sly 2's (making navigating easier as everyone and having more clear and striking landmarks), the variety removes what I felt was Sly 2's weakest aspect of constantly reusing the same mission types (turret missions, hacking, pickpocket x amount of enemies, etc.), and I think the story being a much more personal journey for the gang hits me much harder than Sly 2 devolving into a crazy plot to hypnotize the world to be hateful. Really my only complaints are the lack of clue bottles (which I think would have been super fun in this game due to the afore-mentioned improved hubs) and the inability to select the new gang members from the safehouse. It might sound like I'm hating on Sly 2, but I'm not. I just think that Sly 3 takes what it set up and refined it, then ran with it. Anyway it's just nice to see you revisit this game with a more measured take, so this is cool!

I have to say I find your take on why we Sly fans should appreciate what we have vs. clamoring for more is a refreshing outlook J. I would LOVE a new Sly game, but as Thieves in Time has shown us; more isn't always a good thing. I don't hate Sly 4 by any means but like many others I fell it's a good bad with bad writing, that should have been a stand-alone title without a damn sequel hook that, ended up marring it further because we didn't get that sequel due to the low sales. Would it still be a flawed game? Probably unless somehow the writing team at Sanzaru didn't muck it up, because while I share the sentiment that Time Travel plots are best left alone unless you damn well understand how to best utilize said time travel and stick to a rigid set of rules with said time travel so it doesn't muck things immersion; the sad thing is there was a ton of ways they could have made it work, but alas. Sorry got a little off tangent, but aside from just enjoying your reviews and commentary on this games, I've frankly enjoyed watching your reviews both the originals and your newer versions, as you not only cover new material or fix errors from a prior video; but the showcase of your maturity and growth as a KZreadr reviewer, and how the years temper and either solidify your prior feelings, or you find yourself re-thinking your stance, showing a willingness to consider you might have been wrong, or at least see a view-point you may have ignored or just did not want to indulge. As for myself I have a grand love for Sly 2, and 3. I do enjoy Sly 1, but the second and third game truly have me for various reasons, some I even share with you. With Sony having left the Sly franchise in the dust (I have said many a curse words toward them even more than Sanzaru to degrees); but I'm also ...okay if we never get more. Especially these days when remakes or reboots are such nail-biters on their quality, or if the integrity of the original work will be honored. All that said if a new Sly game was announced and it looked good, count me in! Looking forward to your next videos my friend.

For me, Sly 3 is the best of them all. Sly 2 is slightly better at level design, writing and villains, but the quality of the mission is 3 categories up to the other 3 chapters of the serie. When i played Sly 2 for the first time, i found the last chapters a little boring, because all the game followed a specific pattern and the missions weren't too much different one from the other. Sly 3 has made something impossible, has made every mission worth playing and unique. Sly 3 is the symbol of the pattern that I'd love to see the saga follow, we got the most playable characters, the most boss fights, the best boss fights, the most balanced difficulty (Sly 1, 2, 4 were all too easy imo). The worst part of the game (chapter 2) is still pretty good because the missions are still fantastic. Also, i loved even the minigames. If Sly 3 had at least 2 years of development, imagine how rifined this game could've been. Imagine Sly 3 with more complex maps, maybe even more and larger maps, with things to do in free roaming like for Sly 2; more inside places where you could still go even after their missions; better graphics; possibility to use the other members of the roster as playable characters in the free roam... This game could've been hands down as the best platform ever.

I recently platinum Sly 1-3 and while I’m still debating if 2 or 3 is better I can safely say Sly 3 has better bosses.

I only got to play Sly 3 as a kid, and because of your series on these games I paid for PS+ Premium to stream the series and finally experience them all for myself.
