If an individual has recurrent sinus infections or a sinus infection that just doesn't go away, surgery is one option for treatment. If you look at the goal of sinus surgery it is basically to reestablish the normal ventilation and drainage of the sinuses.

Turbinate surgery is actually very risky. Most turbinate surgeries go okay, but they can also cause Empty Nose Syndrome, a horrible condition that causes the person to feel like they are suffocating because their nerves can't feel the air. It is a very debilitating condition---people have committed suicide. Even a small turbinate surgery can cause this because of nerve damage. ENT's should warn patients about this possible outcome so the patient can decide for themselves if it's worth the risk.
