A big issue I have with VAR and offside that not many people talk about is if there’s a goal and a player is exactly level and they are checking it for a good 5/10 minutes, quite often they will overturn it but if it’s taking that long to check it they should just reward a goal, maybe put a time stamp on VAR.. 2 minutes tops then make a decision

Have to respectfully disagree with Gary on the reasoning for why chip shots are less now. I think its mostly because the team as a whole is more systematic and that results in better defending which lets the keeper sit back more.

Not sure about linekers theory about smaller keepers, if anything I'd say they're generally smaller now, but probably nothing in it overall. Not convinced they stand closer to the line either, if anything, I'd have suspected the opposite. I wonder if it's been coached out to some extent, coaches generally encourage a standard shot rather than a chip, Back in the day I think strikers were more imaginative with the finishing, its all based on percentages now.....ps Ian Wright vs Yeovil town

Got the cheapest set of “Regal” clubs from cash n carry - which was a big deal for my mum - got laughed at by posh boys. Didn’t go back. Football was free, now I need to pay for my kids to play for their team. Fundraising constantly for them, to make it affordable for us, and other parents.

On football and the success of footy in the US. There was an interesting article in The Atlantic about this very question a few years ago. The journalist's conclusion was that there are loads and loads of kids playing it, in little leagues and so on. But there isn't, or wasn't. A clear stream for these talented kids to transition up into junior and senior leagues.. The UK has had about 50 years head start on the US in this regard.. BUT.. With good investment. They could probably move towards consistent tournaments and knockout football in the world cup. THAT SAID Qatar were shocking in the WC. And to nobody's surprise. Right now, they're doing alright. Stranger things have happened.

Phillipe Albert's chip over Schmeichel in the Howay 5-0 game 😎 VAR appeal system - sounds good in principle, but who would review the (in-game) appeal? If it's the same people who came to the contested decision in the first place then I can't see any appeal being useful - who in their right mind would go against a decision they've just spent several minutes reaching?

The US is very big (by geography and population) so the challenges are many in getting so good to be top 4 (let alone top) in the world. Football has been big in some places in the US for 50 years or more already. It's not equal interest everywhere for any sport in the US, there are regional preferences. We have youth leagues in just about every state, but the youth development isn't integrated to professional league academies as in England or to our national team set up. Also it's still mostly a pay to play system for elite youth teams, so we don't uplift players solely based on ability, aptitude, and attitude. The pathway to development is opaque. The players we get in the national team are great and are likely better than 95% of known talent but that's not the same as players being the best or most gifted athletes we have. We won't go to the top imo until the youth access to elite coaching and other development recruitment barriers to the national set up are removed.
