In the UK series, David Brent is actually a huge asshole who doesn't improve while Michael Scott can be a real asshole a lot of times, but is mostly just a weird, pathethic man who is likeable at times.

For anyone who doesn't know, this is a reference to David Jason's character in the Darling Buds of May. It was his catch phrase as he played this farmer who had a heart of gold but didn't play by the rules. Which I imagine Brent found relatable 😅

I love how they gave Brent a proper talent instead of making him awful , makes it so much more authentic and hilarious

There was a realism to The Office, you knew of a David Brent, of office romance, office pranks, nights out and Christmas parties. It was so relatable and that was its charm. It really is a golden piece of television history.

It's got that British depressing atmosphere.. The US version is more light-hearted and positive, but they're both awesome

British comedy is completely different to any other. The sarcasm, the gut wrenching cringe, the wit and charisma is what makes this incredible. Not forgetting you can put your finger on each character (if you’re from British) and you know someone or have worked with someone just like it

Amazing to think this was Gervais' first serious acting job. The subtlety and depth to Brent while being in-your-face awful is amazing. I love when Jan calls him pathetic when she puts the speaking clock on speaker and he immediately answers "is it?" The insecurity and thin skin mixed with arrogance and self absorbtion.

I agree. The subtlety of his acting is excellent. When he begs for his job in the second season, his acting was that good I really felt for Brent despite the fact that he had to coming due to the way he behaved as boss. Felt like he deserved a second (or third or fourth) chance given the emotional depth delivered in that brief moment of self realisation of pleading and remorse.

Actually, what's happening there is Brent is responding to the talking clock - as if he thinks he can pass it off as Finchy randomly telling him the time, in a robot voice, having just been fired. That just makes it all the more hilarious 😁

Andrei Despinoiu that’s not the joke. The joke is more the cringe factor. “Wily-nily” means carefree. He’s saying I won’t have her vagina discussed openly and carefree. That’s the main joke, the “willy” reference is incidental. In making a discussion point of her vagina, that’s where the cringe is, and the humour, not the wordplay of “willy”

@d I don't think the US one is inherently bad, it's just that they butchered the entire concept. The UK version is an expression of reality. A proper insight into office work, and it's somewhat realistic. The US version is more of an escapism of reality, shaping things up to be better than they really are, and choosing audience enjoyment over realism. I think the UK version is definitely better though, it just has a lot more depth to it and I find the depressing humour funnier than the US lighthearted humour. It just seems more real which makes it more entertaining to me.

I love how all of David's stories are in the "and then everybody clapped" genre

What people who like the US version who think this isn't funny enough seems to not get is that this is not just a comedy show, it's drama. And it tells such an honest tale about the torture of being a human being (at times). It's the human condition. But it's funny as hell too. Just not in an upbeat way. It can be, but those moments are rare and deserved. The UK version is about real people, while the US is more standard sitcom.

BBC, realizing they had a massive hit on their hands, asked for more. ricky gervais and stephen merchant insisted that the story was finished, and declared more would be redundant (which showed their integrity towards their craft, in spite of potential revenues...). the show was initially aired on BBC 2.

Anyone else rewatching The Office during lockdown? Because I certainly am, and I’m loving every minute of it.

The amount of people arguing about which version of the office is better here is pretty crazy. They are just different shows, people need to stop comparing them. The UK office is a kind of grim comedy/drama, while the US office is a more upbeat comedy sitcom. I am not from the UK or US, and I enjoy both shows. They just aren’t comparable, as they are pretty much different genres. It pisses me off when people fight about it, thank you for coming to my ted talk.

The guitar scene is probably the funniest scene in any TV show ever.

Michael feels like an exaggerated, satirization of that kind of person, kind of like an editorial. Brent straight up feels like someone i've talked to before.

Honestly, the comedy is brilliant. I've watched the two series over and over for the last 5 or so years and I swear I find something new everytime. Comedy that makes you think holds posterity. Go figure.

I love both versions of the office. LOVE

US and UK are terrific in their own unique ways. The biggest difference though is that UK knew when to end.

The Office was an incredibly original and clever series which should be mentioned whenever talking about the best of British humour. I remember the first time I found it when channel surfing and it reminded me of the first time I saw Monty Python (the Confuse-A-Cat sketch). Both programmes were so odd and different that I didn't know what to make of them.

5:00 to 7:30 is the most brilliant part of the office. How the staff comes together and the consultant is just like "WTF just happend"

Agreed. There is so much subtle detail in the dialogue... the way he says "any mail" to Dawn...

Those saying that the US version is better truly do not appreciate the subtleties of British humour

I also think you need to have had work experience to understand what is being satirised tbh.

When this first aired, I thought it was a real documentary! This was before I'd had an office job.

Tim enjoying David’s music genuinely with Gareth not taking the piss is strangely wholesome

After the Golden Globes and my new found respect! I am gonna watch...ALL!

This series will never be bettered. Ricky and Stephen's finest work.

As an impartial Aussie. You people are crazy, no one style of humour is "better" than another they are just different. And you do realise Ricky and Steve worked on both series right? They'd be proud to see both series turn out to be a success. Humour is not exclusive to a nationality its a human trait and differs from person to person

It does come down to a nationality. Aussies are void of that type of humour.if its not spelt out and obvious then its like why is that funny.

Humour can differ by nationality as is seen in the inbetweeners us and uk. The jokes had to be changed to suit an american audience making it a terrible flop
