Is Science the Way to Know the World? | Lecture 1: "Science and Society" Series

The best Lecture I've ever heard from him. Pervez Hoodbhoy sahab, please keep doing this. Let the frustration out and tell people when they're wrong. No more idling and defending a person's right to believe complete nonsense for the sake of their feelings. We need to assert science as -- by far -- the ultimate authority for truth because nothing else begins to compare to it.

It's the peer review in the Realm of Science that makes it a successful way of looking at the world. Sometimes a really smart/clever person who speaks eloquently can sway people to do stupid things because no one checks if what they're saying is true.

THIS is why when we were in the Stone Ages. We actually thought. We created critical thinking. We realized that worshipping something isn't the best answer. We realized praying to a God doesn't stop sickness, it doesn't stop death. It doesn't make your problems go away. It didn't stop the Plague, flood, drought and other natural disasters, and people EVERYWHERE were praying nonstop! To think, If there had not been a scientific revolution & Evolution of Scientific & Rational temperament , we would never have made progress. we'd still be stuck without electricity, without basic medicine, without any of our basic inventions. We'd be doomed.

I totally agree with that blue t-shirt guy, ' Science does not have the answer to all our problems ' but Science has the questions to all our problems. The answers science provides to all those questions are often misused & inconvenient to politics. ( as he said the misuse of the Theory E = MC² to make Atom bombs rather than to use it for nuclear energy. )

It is very strange that although the number of audience in the hall is very little but most of them are very intelligent and they are behaving better than international and audience of the developed countries.. I also salute them for their questions ! This topic of science as the ultimate source of knowledge is very very interesting and mind boggling. I request you to deliver one lecture on the age old riddle.... Is there any purpose of human life and consciousness and if you find one what is that? Thanks.

When people talk about reconciling science and religion, that is only an issue with people who have preconceived ideas, but scientists cannot/should-not have preconceived ideas they must believe the evidence. All scientific models must conform to NATURE or REALITY, If there is any tiny evidence for some unnatural forces then they must include that in their papers/thesis and account for it. originally from Karachi Pakistan and Teer Haripur Hazaara, now ex-Muslim Atheist , , , ,
