Is Santiago Chile Safe?

Santiago from my experience is very safe. Especially in neighborhoods like Las Condes. You can walk around at night in Las Condes no problem. The area around central Santiago is also safe, as there are many police and guards around although at night I would not recommend the area. So it is mostly a safe place but some of the areas, just like any big city are not as safe.

Santiago has its problems, but honestly, I felt safer in Santiago than I did in Valparaiso and Vina del Mar. We explored the entire city on foot, and once a cyclist tried to purse snatch us, but in general, even the seedier areas of town didn't feel too unsafe, as there was a large police presence. We were just told to avoid the metro and going out at night. In Valparaiso on the other hand, if you turn into the wrong street, you can get mugged or car jacked in broad daylight. And in Vina, there were a bunch of pot smoking teens, and some junkie tried to rob us in front of the fucking cathedral. Chile has very low violent crime, but there is a lot of theft, so be cautious with your belongings.

You have visited the safest areas in Santiago which are the wealthies zones in the city. That's why you almost don't see homeless people on the streets like you see in the U.S. Either way, this is one of the best cities in South America and i hope you come back later and visit the South of the country. There is where you can see the real beauty of this Country: a lot of green forest, rivers and lakes, small towns with a lot of friendly people willing to help.

I visited Santiago and liked it a lot. It reminded me of LA without the beach, maybe Sacto is a good comparison as well. I will say there is a vast difference in wealth that you notice when going from west Santiago to east Santiago. I could definitely live in Santiago.

I notice that in winter time the grass in Santiago turns yellowish due the cold climate. Well, I think Lima Peru is is far (negatively) from Buenos Aires or Santiago, chaotic city full of sales on street, motorcycles-taxis like Calcuta, Bombay in India, insane drivers and life stile is not comparable. People inclusive look like as those poor countries of stereotype of latinamerica, most of them are small and indigenous every where. Only Miraflores district looks like a midle class of Santiago comparatively. It is, the area La Dehesa county in Santiago Chile is taken from any Califorrnian coast neighborhood. Same for Santo Maria de Manqewe, and other similar shapes.

Santiago is worth a couple days to visit. Los Condes, Saint Lucis, Patio Buena Vista and other places around there. Then in Valparaiso take a tour of the cerro (hill) to walk around the neighborhoods. I like Villa Del Mar, near Valparaiso for the hotels. Check out Patagonia, Chileo and the areas south if you can.

Yeah, there's a bunch of fucking gypsie squatters on the outskirts of town. The only time we felt unsafe in Santiago was when we accidentally wondered into an Arab neighborhood. As is the case in most major cities, the immigrant neighborhoods are always the worst! Yeah, police in Santiago aren't corrupt like elsewhere in Latin America. Despite my poor Spanish and their lack of English, they were actually very helpful when we got scammed by a tour agency.
