Is Salers Worth Buying? | Compared To Suze

Ойын-сауық

I am tasting Suze again, and tasting Salers as well to note the differences and similarities. I am almost out of Suze and thought I would replace with Salers to broaden my experience.
Cheers!

I didn't even know there was an alternative to Suze. Hmm, so what I'm getting is....I might just stick to suze for that great flavor profile you want from suze. Salers might dilute the drink to much because I need more for a good flavor profile? Great comparison! Very informative! Enjoy the beautiful sun this weekend! Cheers!

Suze is more flavorful for sure, stick with Suze for now I'd say. I will report back when I figure out more.

The major french brands for gentian liquors are Suze, Avèze and Salers, and they are quite different. Suze has a lot of sugar, like Avèze, and has a very bold gentian taste. Both use other plants to give them a unique flavour profile. Salers is more dry, with a subtler taste compared to both, almost pure gentian (I'm not sure, but I believe there are few spices added) with a slight hint of vanilla coming from the oak barrel aging. I wouldn't say it would really water down a cocktail if you're looking for something with less sugar, which I prefer personally. It depends on what you like in the end ! I suggest trying all of them and making your own opinion !

That's interesting that Salers is gentian only, whereas Suze uses gentian, vanilla, and lemon. Just wondering where you heard this? If it's really the case, maybe it's worth trying to make these at home (I have gentian). Most amaro-like products use such a long list that it's often impossible to replicate their nuance, but these short ingredient lists seem to motivate trying- interested in your thoughts!

I can't remember where I heard/read that, but it feels true. If you have gentian, then you should try making some liqueur! You have nothing to lose!

Great comparison! I don’t think I’ve ever tried them side by side. I like both, but I do prefer suze, though I like how salers is colorless. If you get a chance, try Bonal. It’s another great gentian liqueur. Certainly softer, but it’s great to drink chilled on its own.

Some friends of mine call Salers "The *other* bartender's ketchup" (the first being St~Germain), which is to say you can toss a little into anything and it makers it better. Now I'm not a fan of ketchup, but I *do* like Salers quite a bit, and I do use it in that way. If I make something off the cuff and it seems to be "missing something", often the first bottle I'll reach for is Salers to give it "that certain something". Just a little usually does the trick. That said I don't see a lot of recipes calling for it directly, so I'll be curious to see if you dig some up and how you like them!

I've heard about the ketchup of course, I will try Salers next time I need a little something, thanks! Stay tuned!

Pete! Great comparison vid, fascinating to hear about the differences in such thorough detail. For completeness’ sake (as you are turning into a gentian supertaster 😂), you might consider picking up a bottle of the other generally-available (also French) gentian liqueur - Avèze! Apparently it’s a bit less assertive / more “approachable”, but delicious all the same (some say with hints of orange & mint)…

Yes, I considered Aveze, but decided to go with Salers for now, I might try Aveze later when the Salers starts to run low. Thanks for the kind words!

The best way to build your bar is to decide what drink you want and get what you need for that drink. it will build up slowly. You don't need to get everything at once. Here is a good place to start though: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aY6Tz7xvp9SXgto.html
