My favorite part about using Ryoma is he's the only unit in the game that generally takes little effort to achieve natural S rank in anything. Other Fates units have to try way harder for that without an arms scroll. Only other real contender would probably be Conquest Kaze (specifically Conquest, way more mages).

Odin/Nyx also usually edge S for me because of the big wExp headstart they can get from the chapter 10-14 stretch where Nostanking is really good. It’s really hard for either not to hit B before Leo shows up if you’re using them for that.

mercenary f corrin with saizo or ryoma S supp is the most insane unit in hoshido route, gives him shuriken breaker and axe b too, sol and strong riposte too

While I agree that Corrin is likely better than Ryoma, I think putting the ninjas above him for availability alone is a bit silly. Saizo is only around 6 more chapters than Ryoma, and while Kaze has a bit of "Bonus availability" from BoF, both of them require more investment than Ryoma to be as reliable as him. Birthright is a game that anyone can solo, but not everyone can do it as easily as each other, so the investment required is IMO a bigger deal than almost anything else, and Kaze is pretty investment heavy if you want him to be a carry.

yeah honestly, it's really overstated how much availability hurts Ryoma. Ch 1-5 are basically the tutorial and you can just not to them via branch of fate. He's also in 2 of them as a pretty useful green unit. In ch6 he's available and your strongest unit. Ch7 doesn't have and good units other than Corrin, Azura and the servants. The only notable maps where it hurts to not have him are 8-13. You can technically also get paralogues until then but it's not always useful or recommended. At most you could be getting Kana, Dwyer and Sophie (without doing funky stuff anyway) if you really wanted to, but you can also do them after Ryoma joins too. So he's at max absent for 10 maps if you go for paralogues early and it really doesn't hurt that he's absent there since you're mostly gonna be training your weaker units on low quality enemies in them. Past that, He's available for 15 story maps and any paralogues you do beyond that and save for ch26, he's the best unit in nearly all of them. He also shows up at the same time when you get your second heart seal, which means unless you get someone like Jakob a hyper build with both a partner seal and the only heart seal, he's simply going to be better than everyone else at this point. He can also solo the entirety of ch14 with his base stats with 0 effort or help from anyone, which will snowball him to be able to solo the rest of the game. Nobody else can do that without major investment. Even if you invest in other units, the ninjas will just get str capped and struggle to kill certain things in the final maps and Jakob won't be able to one shot things forever. Ryoma's +6 damage from Bushido and Raijinto will just shit on most other units with his damage even compared to +4 forged shuriken units. He just has a lot going for him over other units and not much holding him back.

Availability in Birthright is an odd argument to make against Ryoma. He shows up long before he is needed and is going to outclass most if not all the units you've been giving special treatment. Who cares if Kaze shows up in chapter 4 when he requires so much attention to not only turn into a competent unit but to even survive the plot lol. Good video. Availability in fates is far and away more important than just how strong a unit is at that point in terms of stats, because there’s also the fact that units who join later have to invest more time in getting to their support ranks. If Ryoma wants to skill dip into a class that he isn’t as great in for skills (eg. Great Master through Hana marriage for Renewal), he likely will have to do this on a map quite late in the game, especially because BR Ch18 and 20 give so little EXP unless very underlevelled, which becomes an issue when those maps really want you to have 1-2 range to enemy phase sweep. It’s not a deal breaker for Ryoma who can sweep without class changing at all, and anybody can easily skill dip in the cross-route Paralogues for a ton of exp, but it’s important to note imo

I mean, even if you don't take into account all the support/reclassing junk, availability is still a problem for Ryoma just by nature of not getting to use him in the early maps. He doesn't get credit for the maps that he didn't help in.

On my current BR play through, I married Ryoma to Kagero for the pair up bonuses from M. Ninja specifically the move +1 bonus. Once I got him Elbow Room and Defender, he goes right back to Swordmaster.

I used to bench her in rev and birthright but recently ive been playing lunatic birthright and decided to make her a kinshi knight for chapter 11 and tbh ive had a lot of fun playing with her, esp with an illusory yumi. Plus, like you said, she's funny, her level up quotes are relatable

Ryoma x Rinkah, with Silas Friendship is just nasty with these skill combos Sm: Vantage / Astra / Swordfaire / LnD Cv: Elbow Room / Defender OS: Lancebreaker Probably would go at least: Vantage, Lancebreaker, Swordfaire, and then flex in two of Astra/LnD/ER/Defender as needed. Don't even need to dip into Cav if saving time/resources. Rinkah can pairup bot the rest of the game in either Chieftan or Blacksmith and give super damage bonus + some speed + some defense. Pretty open and shut case to me. I don't think any unit uses Rinkah better than Ryoma does, and since he already stomps most of the game, it makes it all that much better.

I would argue Saizo because Ryoma really doesn't need her. He can get by fine just in his base class and he rarely actually needs the defense. He will double all the endgame enemies and has crit in the 30s and astra chances of 15-20% on maps that are full to the brim with axe and bow units. He gets full guard gauge nearly every second round of combat and outright kills in one hit at around 50% chance with vantage, while facing only 20% hitrates against green weapon units. The GKs and Heroes don't have enough damage to kill him in 2 rounds, so he can take on basically every group of them. The only groups he faces serious death chances against are the general triplets in Ch24, 25, 26 and 27, all of which he can simply walk away from or kill on player phase or with full guard gauge. Giving a Rinkah pairup, a skill slot for lance breaker and a reclass to a class he doesn't really care about is honestly just way overkill. These are resources that could just go to someone else and would benefit them a lot more than they do Ryoma.

Ah yes, the red lobster man being OP, what else can I expect from the game where if you are able to romance your siblings and if you try, ex machina activate and you're suddenly adopted all along so it's not sweet home Alabama.

I think gameplay wise it's one of the best. It has great music and great art but the story is probably the worst of any game which is a shame.

They talked a lot about how good 0% Ryoma is. You can ignore him half the game and bring him for endgame and still kick ass

Ryoma would look like a complete generic without his mask.

There's something always has bothered me about when people talk about "availability" in FE. Once the unit joining later joins, what's the difference between the early and late unit? If their stats are similar and weapon ranks are equivalent, then the only advantage of the early unit is thier supports. And I'd argue, base level supports are so strong and reliable in Fates, that any level higher is basically irrelevant. Therefore, only Heart Seal reclasses are meaningful as advantages of early units. With that said, what's so great about Kaze and Saizo then? I don't know.

Availability matters because of how resources are distributed. In the later half of FE games, you have stat boosters, killer and forged weapons, supports, reclassing, and more. Stats still matter, but it's easier to create a monster of a unit in the late game than the early game. So while a unit with good stats is always useful, the early game is when those stats matter more. This is why Camilla is often considered better than xander. Xander may be stronger, but when you get camilla in conquest you just haven't had time to build someone close to as good as she is. There's also overall utility. Early game units just have more maps to be useful on and help with, compared to lategame units. To use a somewhat over the top example, Athos in fe7 is the strongest unit in that game, but it would be hard to call him the most useful when he can't help you on any of the hardest maps besides the last one, compared to marcus who can help and be a monster on any map you're struggling with.

When talking availability, it is a measure of time, to be precise, the time they're useful and it is always in the context of a tier list measuring how good a unit is compared to everyone else across the whole game, which again, is time. This IS NOT useful at gauging how much this unit competes for a slot in the team. ... Funny how your example is Camilla vs. Xander, because she is too good and Xander is closer to any other physical unit prior, where pretty much only Silas can square up to him. Selena and Benny are bulky but hit like wet noodles. Laslow and Arthur are strong, but can't really sustain thier damage. Effie and Mozu are both strong and bulky but have to make serious long term concesions to have 1-2 range like him. Beruka and Jakob really can't compete. All of the good things for Kaze come at promoted 15, so his earlyness doesnt matter. And Keaton is weird. Niles basically has his spot bought with kidnapping It's not that none of them can be useful or even better in certain spots, but they need investment just to be as good as Xander, when Xander is about to get even better with supports and reclasses. Think of other late Promoted units in FE. Perceval outshines every cav. Only the xmas cavs can reach his level. Pent every mage. Haar every everything. In FE3, Tiki might as well be God. Ivy needs some speedwings, but solos the game afterwards. Celine, Jean, Anna and Citrinne can only ever hope to be the decaffenated version of her, hell, even Pandreo and loli gotoh too. Them coming late doesn't hinder their usefulness and most definitely no one ever drops thier spot on the army because some nobody got a b support with another sandbag. Favoritism, sure, but objectively it's hard to make an argument against using them.

I do agree that availability is very overrated. Ryoma will outclass pretty much everyone except maybe a well built corrin, but coming in late is still kind of a disadvantage. Not brcausenit makes the unit worse, since as you said, he doesn't really have competition for a slot, but simply because there are less situations where you will be able to take advantage of said unit. All of that said, Ryoma does NOT come late enough for that to really be considered a disadvantage. You can use him for over half of the game if you count paralogues, so overall I do agree with your main point.

Ryoma is great, he lets me skip the unfun late game Rev/Birthright maps!
