Great summary. I’m kinda like Josh that, given the choice, I wouldn’t want to live in a capital or very large city-anywhere. Getting older, I appreciate tranquility but still enjoy the diversity a large city offers. And that’s our big issue. Finding that sweet spot (Italy or Portugal) is challenging so looking at a residential area that’s removed from the tourist madness (as Kalie suggests) might work for us. 👍🏻

Don't forget that as you get older, it is very important to be close to reliable medical care and quick transport to a major hospital. This happened to an acquaintance who moved to a remote village in Italy and sadly suffered a stroke. He is now paralyzed from the waist down and had to be repatriated back to the US all because he couldn't get transported to a hospital on time. By all means, buy that weekend country home (most Italians have second homes), but live in a large city. Other than that, moving to Rome from NYC was the best decision of my life.
