I think this video makes the same mistake most of the other videos regarding living in a simulation do and that you significantly over estimate the compute capacity that would be required. You did realize that only what we are currently observing actually needs to be rendered (which some videos don’t) but then you leapt to the assumption that all of the inhabitants of the simulation must be conscious - and that’s far from a forgone conclusion. Perhaps “Earth 2000” has a single player mode. In that case, the simulation could run on basement console as only the actual people that you meet and interact with would need to be conscious and sentient and the rest - all the inhabitants that you’ll never interact with directly - could be simple NPC’s that follow a preprogrammed script. Or maybe our entire city is conscious? That’s only a million or so consciousnesses that would need to be simulated - which again would require far less compute power than a city-sized computer! This is especially true if our simulated environment is a historical recreation. If that were the case - the baseline for our entire world could be stored in an online, shared database rather than being generated by the simulation itself. Everything from music, TV shows, major events and even weather could be pre-programmed based on what happened in the history we’re based on - and if that’s the case, that lessens the compute requirements even further. A good simulation would allow deviations to occur from the baseline based on the actions of the players so that history could evolve and take a different course - but a massive database would be a good starting point rather than have the inhabitants create everything from scratch. Finally - I don’t think there should be much question about “IF” an advanced civilization would WANT to do this. I am part of this civilization and if I had the technology available to me today, I would want to it - maybe just to prove it could be done - and looking at the evolution of games from standalone Ultima I in the early 1980’s to the first online persistent “worlds” of Ultima Online and Everquest in the late 1990’s to the incredible advances in size and detail that we’ve achieved in just 30 years (Fallout, Red Dead Redemption II) - and the advances we’re making with AI and Machine Learning, I think it’s VERY reasonable to assert that we’ll get there sooner rather than later (if we don’t destroy ourselves) - maybe even within the next century! And there doesn’t seem to be any doubt that we’ll want to do it since the desire is already obvious and there are hundreds of possible applications/use cases that we can already imagine/envision for running these virtual worlds from entertainment to scientific. It also seems that we’ll likely have simulations that are based on our current world as well as simulations based on worlds similar to ours - but where magic is real - and also completely fictional alien simulations. Chances are that when the first simulations go live - we won’t even realize (or accept) that the AI inhabitants will be conscious and every bit as “real” as we are. No doubt this will lead to moral and ethical concerns that need to be dealt with. I have absolutely no doubt that the Christians will commission the creation of a world in which they can program in their God with all of the attributes they currently assign to him. :) It will certainly be interesting to see how that world plays out! I would like to see you do a future video which starts by accepting a hypothetical premise that we are definitely living in a simulation - and then go on to discuss the implications of that with a focus on what the possible outcomes are when we die, or when the simulation ends...for example, is the operating system keeping a running score for each of us based on how we play the game? Is a good score rewarded with advancement to the “next” simulation or a replay of the current one - or maybe even an unlocked mode where we can “go back” and replay any scene from the life we lived - or maybe do things differently? These are all capabilities that I would consider including if I were designing the simulation - so isn’t it logical to assume that the creators might have also thought that way? Anyhow - three generations in my family love your videos. I discovered them and introduced them to both my father and my son and they are now devoted watchers too. I am also happy to start every day by drinking coffee from my Kurzegast mug. Thank you for all you do!

Being in a simulation doesn't necessarily mean the simulation was designed (like we design games). Another type of simulation happens when very simple rules are computed recursively giving rise to very complex structures (like fractals). The later type of simulation doesn't need a sophisticated designer.

The real question would be: Why would it matter? You can think feel and empathize with others that you can interact with in a (at least in our sense) physical environment where the person or thing you are interacting with has its own concious. Would it really matter?

The mere fact that we live on a blue ball that’s floating in the middle of a dark void circling a fireball makes me believe that we might be in a simulation. It’s just such a crazy concept to sometimes comprehend.

I've heard of this though experiment many times, but the till this one, I never really questioned whether it would really matter. In a way, our perception of reality is the only reality that matters.

The biggest flaw is you cant simulate conciousness. You can 'emulate' it, make something appear concious on the outside but its not on the inside.

Ironically, the speed of light could be understood as the maximum rendering speed of our simulation. That way, if you could travel faster than light, then you would see parts of the universe not yet "loaded"

@@26d8 Except that follows some very ridgit aassumptions. For example that we cannot find a way to jump to alternative universes with different physics and use that to travel to a different place in our universe. That we cannot create a zero-point wormhole that would allow data transfer at faster than light speeds (and the wormhole generation is sound mathmatically, we would just need like the power of the whole sun to actually run it). I am optimistic that the filter of lightspeed can be overcome.

I agree. Furthermore it would make sense to create a spherical world surrounded by a cold vacuum so that your simulated beings didn't expand too far putting strain on the computer.

There's something wrong with that; glitches. Even modern technology makes errors, so if we were simulated, then there would be so.e sort of glitches: lagging, noclilping, graphic rendering issues etc.

Dying is just the computer having an error, getting hurt is damaging the computer, after 14 you’re subscription to freedom expires, learning something is an achievement, aging is a level up, giving birth is a new game, having disabilities is hard mode, if you have a sibling then it’s multiplayer, ai is a simulation simulating simulations, strangers are npc’s, family is a simulated part, fun is a thing to learn about the simulation, mistakes are downgrades and vr is a simulation simulating a simulation in a simulation. I could go on but I need a break

You don't even need to do real-time computations. The entities inside the simulation wouldn't know if the program was paused, just like we wouldn't notice if time stopped.

Or we didn't want to do it for a history lesson, maybe we did it so we could live out our dreams and goals. Just think about it why do people play simulations in the first place like gta? So you can experience what it would be like to commit crimes, like rob banks and steal cars without actual real life repercussions. Also another example is why we play games that simulate us being up close to dinosaurs and experience what they were like. So maybe that's why we are all born with some type of goals we want to achieve before we die. We really just want to experience what it is like to experience our dreams without any real life repercussions ( assuming we are actually just simulations controlled by us in the future ). Maybe when we die in this life, our future selves just restart the game just like starting over in games like gta.

My bullshit alarm went off as "simulate a human brain". Even if it was possible, that would still make us sentient and therefore real. It would be the same if we accidentally made a sentient computer. It would be sort of artificially made but the consciousness behind it would be just as real as you and me.

Considering the capability of our own computers, you may not have to simulate everything from the same machine all the time. You could simulate it from dozens, or hundreds, or thousands of computers, much like a multiplayer videogame. You create the map, simulate an individual within the computer, and then program their reactions and interactions with their direct environment. Not only does this make such a program more feasible, it also gives a potential explanation for how and why a civilization might simulate a universe - to them, it's a game. They play as the individual - you - and explore your direct environment and interactions. Such an advanced AI could be conscious and self-aware in their own environment, but simulated to an outside observer. Thus, blurring the lines between reality and simulation. If every conscious being is simulated, through a vast network of communications, you could create an entire universe within the confines of technology. We actually have games that can [sort of] simulate this already. Games like Rimworld where you create characters with personalities and behaviors depending on their traits, capabilities, and a simulated lifespan, even with diseases and illnesses. Another good example is One Hour One life, in which every minute that passes is a year for the avatar you play as and you gather resources to survive. However, they're not nearly as advanced as a true consciousness is. At least, not yet. One day, however, we might be able to program code so advanced that it simulates a consciousness. If that becomes true, and if we are in a simulation, that would mean simulations are capable of creating their own simulations. It's all a matter of perspective. I always figured that, even if this reality isn't technically 'real', it's real to the people inhabiting it currently, and so not a cause for concern.

The biggest counter to this argument is why aliens would want to watch someone be sad for 24 hours

Ahh like in a dream where the time is 1/12 times slower .May be in another simulation world a guy is sleeping and dreaming which is much slower in this world and when he wakes up we are dead like the characters in our dreams 😴💭. So the guy in the simulation world is dreaming us and we are dreaming and we sometimes have someone dreaming in our dreams too. Perhaps the guy I've mentioned before is also a character of some other dream. So it might form infinite dreamers which creates the world 😂
