I used to be on this game called fire pro wrestling world. I created multiple charecters on (ps4). As I played in e feds I learned how racist wrestling fans really were. White dudes used to literally politic for me not to wrestle on a damn video game. Dudes were getting jealous and it was weird as hell and I didn't get it. After a while I just completely left it alone when no one would help me with theme music. I offered to pay 50 bucks for people to upload for me but no one would do it so I just quit. It was fun but I learned how racist it really was. The white dudes who pretended to be cool wanted you to kiss they're ass. I started seeing it for what it was and just left it alone.

My dad was a promoter in Pensacola, Florida back in the day and I’ve heard a lot of stories about terry. Back in 1999 we moved to Tampa and our house was one street over from Terry’s. He’s such a weird dude. Him and Linda were swingers, like big time. They would try to swing with other wrestler couples the most but they weren’t too picky. The times we’ve been at his house I never once heard him say anything racist. Like that’s the kind of environment where something like that would come out the most but man I just never heard anything racist at all. He’s actually into hip hop, he likes Bone Thugs and Harmony which surprised the hell out of me. Maybe he has some racist bones in him, that recording was pretty damning, but again in person in a more friendly and intimate setting I never recall him being racist. Piper, Flair, Bob Orton, all of the Armstrong’s, Pat Patterson, These guys are all racist. Ric Flair I just don’t understand. He will open up and introduce post Malone in a stadium in Atlanta, Get on stage with Rae Sremmurd and bounce around, but call someone the N word to their face. He called atlas the N word multiple multiple times.

How did the people who were fans of Hulk Hogan feel? I'll answer. I grew up watching wrestling and Hulk Hogan was a hero to me and my siblings. When it came out, it really hurt. It was so disappointing. I have learned other things about his character recently and he really is just not that decent of a guy. But as a Black kid who idolized him, it was kind of crushing. There are a lot of closeted racists out there, and this is a prime example of why a lot of us don't trust white people, for those that don't understand.

However I was less disappointed when I found out about Hulk being racist because by that point I had found out about Vince and the WWE being massive racists and wasnt surprised when I found out Hulk was the same way. Racism is still a huge part of wrestling, although it has gotten better. Like how almost every Black tag team has a 'thug' gimmick. Cryme Time, the Street Profits, Hit Row, etc. The New Day is goofy, but at least it's something different. Asian and Mexican wrestlers are never given serious pushes and almost always have an 'ethnic' gimmick. Black wrestlers have had a little bit more success, but not much more. Currently in WWE, there are no Black male wrestlers being pushed. We'll see when/if Trick Williams gets balled up to Raw or Smackdown. Bianca Belair did have a lengthy title run not too long ago, but even she has been buried as of late and she and Jade gave up the belts after a very short reign as tag team champs. At least Swerve is being allowed to shine in AEW.

The WWF/E’s commitment to xenophobia is truly awe inspiring. To take an ethnic or foreign person and reduce them to their race (if non-white) or country of origin (if non-American white) in new and unique ways. I mean it’s gotta be exhausting after a while. At a certain point it must be easier to just not be xenophobic but they stubbornly stay committed to it. It’s like Michael Bay movies but somehow even worse!

anything can be racist so long as it's racists doing it. the thing about racism is it can be overt or denyable. like smoky mt. wrestling is RACIST. themes are racist, characters, storylines, and the people backstage. but Vince Mcmahn is also racist.... but he'll do the deniability dance where he'll make the locker room diverse then when no one's looking just fire everyone and undo what he just did. Hogans a bit between the kind of racism you see in SMW and McMahn's WWE. He'll say it out loud but behind closed doors. all racism is bad. somehow I think racism + lying about it is a lot worse than just being racist overtly and letting people know you're no good. but obviously its the lying that lets them get away with it. can't just go easy the overt stuff is better just because you can see it. Even SMW only used the N word backstage. NewJack heard it and left. And I think that's meaningful because look at the gangsta character he played. Hell there's a really good interview from "welfare queen" (sheesh) from GLOW talking about how as a performer she'd have to take those degrading roles just to keep on the industry's good side. so yeah is pro wrestling racist? I dunno, depends on the values of the promoters. It does lend itself well to racism due to it's carnival roots. I guess its still trying to emancipate itself from that.

I don't know how Hogan thought anyone could take him seriously when he did his PR tour and claimed not to be a racist...after literally saying the words 'I'm a racist' on the recording. Sorry, brother, but no one is that dumb. We aren't going to take the word of a Hulkster who is desperately trying to salvage his reputation and knows he's being recorded, over the word of a Hulkster who was speaking privately and didn't know he was being recorded. If he'd owned it afterward...said 'I've been racist, but I'm working on being better'...that would've at least been SOMETHING. Instead, all he gave out was denial. But it seems to have worked, regardless, in the long run...can't keep a bad man down, I guess.

do some people realize wrestling is just a show. in some of the most bloody feuds and controversial feuds majority of the two wrestlers were actually great friends outside of the ring. there are exceptions to this though. sgt. slaughter actually cried when he found out his friend the iron sheik died. another case was blackjack mulligan and kevin sullivan. they were friends outside the ring. things are not always what they appear to be on the surface. yeah its def. a different world today. if we had a terrorist attack today in this country. there will be people cheering in the streets. and more than likely the government will just turn a blind eye because they fear it would be considered racist. fkd up in my honest opinion.

Akeem being called "The African Dream" was yet another rip from the then WWF on "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, same as how Virgil got his name and his "African Talk" promos were made to make fun of Dusty speaking that way in his promos, more than it was him emulating or poking fun of how an African American person talks. With that in mind, I wouldn´t call the gimmick racist as much as it was a bad diss attempt against Jim Crockett Promotions and Dusty in particular. In all fairness "The Twin Towers", with him and The Big Boss Man, were as over as any heel team was in that era, when they turned Boss Man face and split them up.

I mean, I think you make some good points. But I'd also argue that he didn't really come here to be world champ. Nakamura specifically, that is. I think he came more so he could have a higher (or similar) amount of money with less intense matches compared to Japan. The style in WWE is much less brutal than he was having in Japan so it's almost like retirement while still working. Of course at the end of the day I think you're mostly right and that was probably largely influenced by Vince and people like Kevin Dunn. Hopefully things will be different going forward (I realize your comment was probably made before the major changes we've seen recently).

As thoughtful and well intentioned as you come across, I do think you have a slight lack of understanding of the 20th century, I think you have done a lot of research however the past is often viewed without its original context, critiquing these transient events with modern eyes paints them to be something they definitely were not. Most of the wrestlers involved in these stories are for the most part just wankers anyway as most wrestlers are but you are putting a CRT narrative to stories that where created to either highlight and ridicule racism or illustrate that it is no longer a legitimate thing with any real power or effect as many comedians do, racist jokes and stereotypes have been used throughout history not only to spread hate but also to highlight the absurdity of racism itself. Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy are examples of hilarious comedians who used the same technique. Stereotypes are funny and I don't think there is a human alive who hasn't laughed at one.

Hulk Hogan was born in 1953 in GEORGIA. And he was raised in Florida. Why does it shock anyone that he is racist? Not every elderly person in Florida or even Georgia is racist. But a significantly large percentage of them are. Given the context, I think its over the top for the WWE to have stripped him from the Hall of Fame (he was reinstated 3 years after the scandal I believe) or to have even fired him in the first place (though they did bring him back 3 years later as well). I know a 29 year old woman who migrated here from Florida and even she is an asshole. Florida is full of Republican assholes. I'm willing to give 68 year old Hulk Hogan a pass. Even race and the recent anti-vaxx stuff aside, Hulk Hogan was always a politicking asshole. But he is a legend of wrestling. I hope that Hulk evolves to become a better person after these unfortunate events and for Hulk's case that he gets vaccinated. He's 68 years old and has done steroids for most of his life. If he catches COVID, it might not end well for him.
