Is Pickleball a Threat to Tennis?
During a five-year span, from 2016 to 2021, Pickleball participation in the USA nearly doubled from 2.5million to 4.8million.
The upshots of the sport are clear to see: it's a shorter game with a more straightforward scoring system than tennis; the courts take up less room - you can fit four pickleball courts in one tennis court; it can be played indoors or outdoors, it's a social activity and, while great exercise, it's not as physically demanding as tennis.
Given the recent investment in the sport - often at the expense of traditional tennis courts - some view the growth of pickleball as a major threat to tennis. But are they right to do so? And is there anything tennis should seek to learn from its innovative racquet-sport brother?

Pickleball is quite boring to watch. it's a volley game basically. If they extend the no-volley zone then maybe it'll get interesting

They've got to make pickleball rallies 2,365 shots each time to out-appeal modern tennis' 2363-shot dingdong rallies! Modern audiences love 2300+ shots per rally!

Pickleball is growing amongst the older population and retirees, those that have time and money and are looking for ways to stay active. I'm in my 50s and I play both but admit PB is easier on my body than tennis.

i have a tennis channel plus subscription and the livestreaming of pickleball over a tennis match is common and annoying asf! tennis channel needs to fix their laggy streaming service and upgrade their streaming quality (only can stream in 720p like it's still 2009 🙄) then worrying about streaming other sports on their service

Tennis is the world's best sport in my opinion. We are lucky to have this game, I wonder if it's a sport played in heaven.

Agreed - it's widely played, it's the absolute king in terms of testing all-round ability to play (mental, physical, technique) and also entertaining to watch as it can be played so many different ways (S&V, aggressive baseline, counterpunching, slowballing) and the top players play each other lots (the top mens rivalries are 50+ matches, the top boxing rivalries are single digits for example)

They did a fantastic job developing the tennis ball, its unique because you can either generate pace/spin on it easily, or you can take pace off the ball as well. I don't like that pickle is a wiffle ball, just too easy. I take a lot of pride in being good at one of the most difficult sports you can learn and after 30 years of playing has continued to reward/challenge/keep me in shape! I also don't like all the bending over you must do in pickle, and how you cannot step into the kitchen with your feet forcing us to just use hands. I think pickle is great, but I hope eventually these newbies will give tennis a try in the future.......

Lol absolutely not at the professional level. Pro pickleball looks like 4.0 tennis. However at the amateur level, pickleball is a huge threat due to dumbed down nature of the game.
