Nutting bought the Pirates for $92m in '96 and the team is now worth almost $1.3b. He has made so much money and has NEVER put it back into the team. He should have sold the team to someone that actually wants to win a long time ago, if he isn't willing to pay to try to contend. I'm born and raised here in Pittsburgh and having a half decent baseball team again has been held hostage for far too long by that POS!

Dude, Mason Miller is from the Pittsburgh area. I played with him in college. He played 2 years at Waynesburg before he was diagnosed with diabetes and started throwing absolute gas!

I like his priorities. Donating $100 to the Gary Sinise Foundation for every strikeout he records this season. The money will go directly toward raising funds for veterans and first responders. Doesn't matter where he's playing. I'm a fan. Hopefully he'll keep doing well and have a great career.

yeah my first thought was Randy Johnson trajectory. Could always throw crazy hard but the wipeout slider was what put him on the next level. I just hope he stays healthy long term throwing that hard. Seems like everyone throwing 100 needs Tommy John now.

You get guys who go to pitching clinics that teach you to throw harder. And you also have pitcher's arms falling off. Its great to know you can throw heat when you want to, but you could also dial it back into the upper 90's and have a long career. Justin Verlander would be a great pitcher to mirror. Dude can throw heat, but he can comfortably and sustainably throw upper 90's and keeps his arm intact. The problem is the ball clubs are treating pitchers like cattle. They could give two shits if your arm falls off. They'll go find another pitching clinic graduate who again, from an early age has been taught the most optimal way to throw hard and as such has way more stress miles on his arm. The incentive structure is set up for pitchers to want to throw as hard as possible. He's being rewarded by McAfee for how excited he is because he throws hard. Never mind the guy was throwing darts at spots. We have to start promoting pitcher health over the circus attraction crap. See what the old legends have to say about pitching right now. They will all agree that the incentive structure does not care about pitcher health. It only cares about finding guys who can gas the ball right now.

The answer to the question is no. There isn't a single person who can change baseball by themselves.....but for sure he's gonna change whatever team he's on.

As much as I can’t stand Bob Nutting, I do agree and think there’s a better chance he will actually spend some money this next off season to better the team. Pirate ownership has to be the worst in the league, maybe the worst in all pro sports. The guy got a free stadium, and gets $ on parking, concessions, tshirts, tix, etc. He gets more from MLB than he actually pays in payroll. Putting more $$ in the team lessens his profits. He is totally content being the feeder team to the rest of the league. He is not a baseball fan. The team is a line item entry for him. He turned down a Cuban backed offer to sell the team and a Lemieux backed offer after whining that he has losses every year. They are always in the top half for attendance. He will not put more money in the team.
