my trouble is it takes me a while to get to sleep unless I have perfect settings, so if I set an alarm for 30 mins then I might still be awake when the alarm goes off

Just lay down with the lights off will still give you some rest. It might not be as good as a full 30 min nap, its still better than being up and alert. For me, knowing this actually helped me sleep during naps cause I was less stressed about actually trying to nap. What I do is set the alarm for 20-30 min and just laydown. You'll still feel better at the end so don't stress about needing to fall asleep and just let yourself relax.

Literally just did this earlier today, I'm like well I need to get 1:30 hrs of nap, but I don't fall asleep instantly lol. So i set my alarm for 1:50 and I did end up falling asleep somewhere in between. Waiting for the day humans get the panel update where we can just select sleep mode for 30 minutes and thats that. lolol

If you ever feel like you’re tired after or didn’t get anything out of the nap, try random intervals for the timer too :) Sometimes I’ll set the timer for 17 minutes or 27 minutes to eek out just a few extra minutes of that sweet rest, depending on how exhausted I am or if I need to really grind out some work on personal projects. It gets really easy to tailor your nap to the day, but I really just keep it below 30 minutes, and usually more than 7 minutes.

I think staying awake regardless of having a “tired brain” or worse, “an exhausted brain” is bad. Meaning, if you don’t take a nap when you’re sleepy and consequently have to push yourself to stay awake later on when you’re really tired, I think this is mentally unhealthy. I’m no scientist, but I’m well aware that we are animals, just like cats and dogs, and the natural instinct of all animals is to go to sleep whenever they’re tired. Because we are more intelligent beings, we’re able to reason and override our natural desires to take a nap or sleep. I don’t know much about the consequences of sleep deprivation, but one can be sure that they’re not just in harms way when not getting enough sleep at night, but also when operating with a “tired brain” when they needed a nap and didn’t take one. To conclude, I will state that surely not all humans require naps. Not all humans experience fatigue in the later hours of the day. For those who are fresh, regardless of the time of day, certainly a nap is non-consequential. It’s certainly important though for others, such as me, ha ha, at 59, a cancer survivor with ongoing health issues. A nap for me is huge.

Once at around 8-9pm and again at 5-6am, this for me feels way better and well rested; I still get 6 hours of sleep but broken into two segments. Otherwise I won't conk out normally until 4am trying to cram it all at once and usually wake up tired.

Fortunately for me I can fall asleep if I want to under 5 mins (probably due to fatigue from school work), and naturally waking up 10/15 mins after, I'm ready for the next class. And it wasn't just me, but most of my classmates did the same

I remember one army training camp where I was beginning to be dead tired of having had so little sleep for so many days and being cold most of the time (it was winter) since I was so tired. Then came a day when it was our squad's turn to train first aid which happened in the sports hall of a nearby barracks. It was a blessing to be inside for a while but the best part came when our trainer looked at his watch after he'd taken us through the program and said we were ahead of time and there was a good twenty minutes for us to nap if we wanted. We immediately lay down on the wooden floor and went to sleep. It was almost a miracle how much better I felt after that short sleep in a warm house.

A little late to this video but I have recently changed my whole diet and no longer need to nap. I eat super clean now and am not tired all the time, almost no sugar, super low sodium (trying for zero of both). I eat a lot of raw veg and replaced meat protein with eggs, etc. (I still eat some meat and fish). It has made a world of difference in my life. Just a thought. I used to sleep all afternoon, every afternoon and sometimes straight though to the evening.

Great topic that everyone can contribute much to, so here's my two cents. I use to take 20 minute naps in my car after eating my lunch for the three years I worked at a particular job, my last ten minutes of the hour lunch to walk back in, wash up, go to the bathroom, etc., and it was the perfect amount of time for me. People use to comment on how much energy I had every day, and of course being young helped. It was decades ago, but I never remember having to set my watch. After that, and as I got older, I can't take naps now, cause always feeling so exhausted and not sleeping well at night can have me conking out and sleeping for too long and when I wake, feel worse than I did before. Unfortunately, one thing I'm horrible at in life is sleeping. And more unfortunately, I think it's the same for a lot of people. I hate taking pills, which adds to my problem, but I know others who take too many pills and have issues because of it. I have a friend who goes to sleep every night on his back, sleeps through the night and is well rested, so I know it can be done. But no matter what methods I try, can't get it right. Oh well, time for my nap, I'm terribly busy. 😊

Also that you have to have a very relaxed environment to comfortably take naps, or you never concentrate enough to be able to even start sleeping. Due to day-time being more loud than night-time generally. If you are living in a city, for example, kiss good naps goodbye. Unless you have a room designated specifically for napping. I have a professor, he said once that he is using his "out of comission" drum room as nap room, he lives right near a highway, so even just sleeping at night is impossible for him.

And this is 100% correct. That 90 minute mark can vary from person to person, but not by much. It's worth trying to set your alarm for a period of time that falls on a multiple of 90 minutes, eg 9 hours is good for some people but might be too long for you so try and 7 and half hours. You need to experiment for the optimal time fot you because if your sleep cycle is a bit longer or shorter your 90 optimal multiple might shift a bit earlier or later.

I once had one of these Stage 3 naps when I was tense. I got jolted awake when someone called my name from our outside gate for assistance, I woke up so confused that my mind perceived things that just weren't true. My rooms window is huge and from it I can see our neighborhood, car and front gate; what I saw outside when I woke was an apocalyptic version of what was there(Imagine:: a desert with normal walls and a car). I was sooo lost and it took me 2 minutes to understand what was going on😅

Also, the time it takes u to fall asleep varies depending on how tired you are and the timing of each stage varies for everyone. I think these times are averages so u kind of have to experiment in how long your own maps should be but other than that 20 min is the accepted average and a good place to start.

I have narcolepsy so let me feel everyone in on the napping portion of that. With narcolepsy whether you got good sleep or not you're going to be tired randomly, and you may even fall asleep without realizing it. To prevent this you need to avoid stress and anxiety, for the most part that tends to stop it but not always, that's why across the day you have to spread out a few naps, about 15 to 30 minute naps about the day, once you wake up you'll start doing school, then about maybe 2 or 3 hours into your work you can have a 15 minute nap, once you wake up from that nap or have someone wake you up if you have bad narcolepsy like me, you'd go back to school for another few hours about 3 hours then another nap, you also have an nap near whenever your lunch time is, and then throughout the rest of the day you can kind of just nap whenever you feel like it (after school ends that is). Also if any of you have questions about narcolepsy don't be shy to ask I am more than happy to answer! Before that though I am going to put some answers for some more common questions. Q 1. "What's bad narcolepsy?" Answer: What I considered to be bad narcolepsy is what I have, I can fall asleep within around 10 minutes, and I enter REM sleep within about 15! Q 2. "Why would narcolepsy make you more tired?" Answer: Narcolepsy tends to pair along with another thing which is known as insomnia, I do have both, so you can't sleep on command, yet you can sleep when your narcolepsy kicks in! Q 3. "Does it make life harder?/Is it a disability?" Answer: No not really, it's not a disability per say but I suppose it could be looked at like one, yes it makes life harder but not extremely, since I've always had it, it's not something that you can catch it's something your born with, I can't really imagine a life without it and I consider it a part of me! Q 4. "Do you have other things? Disability wise?" Answer: Yes. I have a few, autism, ADHD, OCD, EDS, Possibly Bi-Polar disorder, and a few others!

Never had a nap in my entire life (apart from being a baby etc...obvs.) I'd love to be able to nap, it would help my mental health so much seeing how much sleep I don't get due to insomnia & sleep anxiety.

Also having coffee right before napping makes me not fall asleep as deeply, and stayibg hydrated in general makes me less tired

It's also important to remember that the amount of time each person takes to enter into each of the different phases of sleep and the duration of time spent in each phase is different for everyone therefore the optimal amount of time for a nap varies. Personally find I function best when I sleep 5-6 hours at night and take an hour nap about 1 or 2 times a week.

I used to nap for however long I wanted during my school days, typically around 2hrs. Since I didn't set an alarm or anything and woke up naturally, I don't think I ended up with sleep inertia so I had the energy. But then I started working and the days just feel too short. I'm still tired and I do want to rest, but I realised that if I took a 20 - 30mins nap, I end up just like he said, feeling even more tired. So I tried to just set an alarm for 10mins and playing a Livestream of a vtuber or just listening to some music at a volume I could hear that isn't too soft. That way, I don't end up sleeping too comfortably but I do get the rest I need. Though typically I do end up snoozing for another 10mins, but by the time the 2nd alarm rings, I'm ready to be up.

Yea this only works in a vacuum though. The problem with this is it’s just a general understanding of how our sleep cycle works without any external data. You’re not telling people anything that will actually help them beyond the understanding of what the different stages are. It’s up to the individuals to figure out when and how their stages start and affect their quality of sleep.
