I have 40 years of soldering-desoldering and tech exp. Even reworking under a microscope. This is VERY helpful.

Love your videos. I gave up fixing vintage stuff 2 years ago because I got lost too many times and not enough how to content on KZread at the time. I believe that techs these days wouldn't want to show people how to fix them as it would put them out of business. My prediction is that values of these units will go up even higher as more people will try to acquire them cause now they know how to fix them through your videos. Have sansui 8080db, 9090, and 9090db.

Nice video, cool to see old equipment, brings back memories. Dolby FM was barely broadcast back in the 70's and certainly nobody broadcasts Dolby today. In order for the circuit to work, the fm signal needed pre-emphasis applied at the station, then the receiver would apply de-emphasis. But at least it passes signal, so your customer is glad it "works" but it doesn't really do anything but do a low pass filter on the fm signal. This reminds me that I need to repair an old onkyo receiver. 70's vintage equip were works of art.

Very nice tutorial. Don't change how you do videos as the pace, detail and explanations are just right.

Your videos are great. I use to hate the fact that you had to hold the camera. But now you have a boom of some sort, I think? Keep up the good work!

I've worked on a lot of 9090 types but I really enjoyed this; and I remember one on which I couldn't get that last one channel working in Dolby mode - probably could have got it if this had been available in 1987 or so. Never too late to learn.

You state after you verify signal to the Dolby board and checking the output from the Dolby board at the volume pot if there were no output you would pull the Dolby board - wouldn't you recommend cleaning the switches first? Just a thought.

Blue glow, your method of explaining is very easy to follow. As you inject a signal on a working unit, do you set the unit dials on a selected station? please advise ! best regards.. Victor

Wow this is super informative with such a logical break down... I am learning so much and love this type of work... My right channel is lagging on VU meter and sound as well as not sounding clear. I tested all resistors on driver board and all were within spec except C01 and C02 resistors reading 652 ohms and 1164 ohms... Do I need to reinstall driver board to run your tests? Should I replace all caps and resistors on driver board just to be safe? Thank you Thank you

You don't need an oscilloscope to trace signals. You can use many DMMs to show frequency.

Hakko FR300 desoldering gun. Seriously. You won't use a soldersucker again. I love mine. Might consider the 400 as well, since it has some larger tips, but the 300 should do one of these boards no problem.

you could bypass the Dolby board doesn't look to difficult to do from the circuit diagram what i can see. that board is just use for recording purposes not necessary today if you do not have a reel-to-reel

Trust me, many have tried. Its the default easy answer everyone wants to do but in practicality, bypassing this board, bypasses a lot of functions on the unit. Forget the schematic, the physical connections on that board feed a lot of things in and out, when you skip the board, you skip all those functions.

made me think at the time why couldn't you use the new sucking ball with the old one? I mean it's just the ball thats rotted the tip is ok! can you not use the tip from the old one in the new one problem solved no! even if you have to glue it, or if your tip is too small just wrap some paper round it .
