Based on the information of the two episodes, this is the scenario. The water pump failed, but the owner ran it hot for a while, warping the engine. The BMW dealership replaced the pump, and it still had overheating issues. So the dealership pulled the head to look at the gasket, and found the block irretrievably warped. The owner didn't want to or couldn't afford to replace the engine, so they put everything back, not bothering to even reseal the gasket, and offered it up for auction, so it would be someone else's problem. The dealership recommended replacing the engine, but otherwise wouldn't say anything about it.

I feel like SOMEWHERE there is a car like this that has been in a really bad wreck but has a perfectly good engine . Rich is calling to tell you he knows where it's at!?!

Bunch of bs about timing, couple microns will have no effect on timing chain. And the timing sprockets are free floating. He just wanted to create drama for you.

You can glue a full size sheet of 60 grit sandpaper to some flat-pressed wood from home depot and surface the head yourself , and it would be fixed for $15 with no issues. 100% Machine shop guy is talking about mole-hills like they are mountains.

Enthusiasm is one thing, but maybe their enthusiasm stems from milking this KZreadr for all he is worth. Dude spent an entire day in a previous video messing with the "BMW dealer computer" and still failed to identify the blown head gasket. In my opinion, and as the subsequent videos revealed, they should have: 1) Pressure tested the cooling system. 2) Performed the exhaust gas presence test on the cooling system. In doing so, I estimate that they could have identified the blown head gasket in about an hour. Instead, Sam had to do the block test himself. Maybe he is just dragging the entire fiasco out for maximum content creation and drama, but color me unimpressed with EuroCharged's diagnostic skills.

@@jersonmoran7340 The LS and the posterity of that V8 is why I keep going back to GM. The LS3 is as near to the perfect machine as mankind will ever see.

Let me tell you, if I live anywhere near that shop, I would bring every car that I have over there for service and maintenance. The shop owner demonstrated a relaxed professionalism that should be an example for every shop. He made the problem his own and applied years of experience in tracking down the issue. I am so happy that they resolve the problem. I came across this video because I am considering adding this very car to my small collection of vehicles. I’m researching common issues and resolutions prior to purchase and I came across this video. Well done to you for the video and to your mechanic for pulling a rabbit out of a hat!

I absolutely HATE it when they include ad's, then also include a full on promotion in the video. They get revenue from the ads (or the ones that are NOT watched by the people who pay for premium as well, so the poster loses nothing here) and then they include yet another one that cannot be skipped with a click (yes, you can move the track forward a bit but on slow connections that sucks) or "paid off." I get the business practice, I really do. I would probably do the same. But I HATE it.

I absolutely love how the safety locks on the lift tick in time with the beat 🥰 I used to be a tire tech, then apprentice, and I miss the tick of the locks on the lift. Also, that knife in your ad, it looks like a Morakniv. Those blades ARE NOT stainless steel NOR treated to prevent rust. My old roommate had some for kitchen knives and they eventually developed spots of surface rust so you need to dry them really good and keep it oiled to prevent rusting. But other than that they are absolutely fantastic knives! 👍🏻👍🏻

Hey Sam, I'm so glad I found your videos on this car. They give me companionship! I've been struggling for a long time with a BMW Mini that had behaviours nobody could properly diagnose. It makes me feel much better to know I am not alone in this world! I finally found that leak down results were varying with each engine rotation so it might look good 9 times then once blow out the intake valves. Finally I took the head off and got all valve stems replaced, valve seats cut and head skimmed. In the process of resembling. Sometimes it seems like only taking the head off can tell you what's up! P.S. your cylinder bores looked very dark.

You know what? Headgasket makes sense. Here's what I bet happeened: The car got in a front end wreck, got rebuilt but the damaged cooling system wasn't properly bled, so as people were trying to troubleshoot that it overheated and killed the head gasket.

Oooooor... The injector went bad, leaned out which explains the clean piston top, and ended up burning the head gasket as the cylinder temp rose badly.

Man you can tell Steven is the one friends that always sees the glass half full. He really believed that Sam brought a head ready to go back and then to see his face after he realize it was done.

I'm glad Sam attempts projects like this, even though many of them fall through when it comes back around to what the original diagnosis was. He shows the cons of buying a used car from an auction. You take a shot in the dark and work with what you got.

Rather than learning about auction cars, I learned (even more) that I want to stay far away from late model BMW. Temperamental, ridiculous things that will keep breaking.

BMW dealers see many BMWs come in for repairs. After a few years, they know the common issues better than anyone. $160 inspection is usually worth it and then repair it yourself.

Sam: "you were trained at BMW werent you?" Steven: "BMW? naw fam i was trained at Ford"

I would've been checking the specs, I've had many a heads machined past .008 without a problem, just have to check valve to piston clearance. Also usually the block doesn't warp like the head will...

I could have sworn the first video someone told you that you needed a new engine. Seems he was the smart one in the bunch.

Drop a V8 into it dude. Make it what it has always dreamed of being. Make it a CAR. Not a washing machine with a sound track.

BMWs are so-so strange. When I had my Mini Cooper S it had issues with coolant leaving the system on-random, but it has never overheated on me, ever, even when the overflow tank was low on coolant. And here you have an I8 with no coolant issues that can't drive 4 miles.

I seem to have missed the part in either video where they they did the Compression and/or Leak Down Test. Both are pretty basic for diagnosing a blown head gasket and they are inexpensive and quick tests to do.

That's heartbreaking....very educational and a hard lesson. Love the content!

@@macbeth2354 I’ve had this type of head gasket failed before, and it’s a weird leak..the cylinder will hold pressure during a test, but under normal use, it’s a one way minor leak from cylinder to water jacket.. almost like a check valve the exhaust only enters the cooling system

Most of the wrecks I see are front end. If not all. There was one with 328 miles.

When we used to race Fiats back in the '60s, we would shave off five times that and shim up the rockers with cut-out pieces of aluminum pie plate from Publix.

When a mechanical is your friend, you'll have a great job .. when not ,You will throw your car for scrap🤗

The answer from the local huckster.. - Plane the head as little as needed to get it flat. - Double/triple up on the head gasketrs to make up the difference, lots of high temp adhesive sealant. - Button it back up, clear any codes, cross your fingers and hope. - If it runs, pretend stop leak worked and sell it before it blows again.

So, the lesson here is: If a BMW dealership says the car needs a new engine, then just walk away.

@@SW-qr8qe Not in this case. The damage is too severe. The machinist said the head is warped so bad that it would need to be milled down too much to make it flat, then the valves would hit the piston heads, and the timing would be off and cause the car's computer to get confused. Plus, since the engine overheated enough to cause the head gasket to fail in all three cylinders, then the block is probably bad too.

You watched this series and you still want a late model BMW? Good luck, friend. It must be cheaper to own a Lambo. Parts are expensive, but maybe they can be fabricated, and the whole machine is comprensible and reasonably fixable. For this BMW they want 5 figures for its 3 cylinder hamster motor, and you have to lift the car for the privilege of getting to it.

@@davidquinn9676 Yes I absolutely do. And yes my mentors have expensive problems with their BMWs but they have the funds to fix it. So be it, the car is really enjoyable to drive even though the best driving experience I’ve gotten was with the Mercedes brand. BMW appeals to me more and I will pay to play.

What’s the point of the porn angle. I like the channel but don’t see how the introduction of sleazy porn references pretty gross.

One problem they did not mention about skimming OHC heads is that it can put the cam journals out of line and cause the cams to snap, it is often better to bolt a head back on that is only a little warped as the head becomes flat once bolted down, and therefore cam journals inline.

Since this video is triple monetized, I hope he made a deal with the shop owner to give him some of the profit from the video. Maybe 10 or 15% would be fine I think. I’m sure he got paid for his time, but this guy deserves a big tip and I think sharing monetization rewards would be an amazing gesture.

Hey Sam , one thing i believe you need to be checking for is IF the overheating has affected the Cylinder Heads hardness , maybe you have already i just didn't see it in your video, i've watched some machinist do it , its a simple test they drop a ball bearing thru a clear PVC tube and IF it doesn't bounce off the Cyl. head the Heads hardness has been affected , cheers all the best

Story I witnessed from a women who cooked her engine... She didn't notice the big bright light telling her to stop the car and turn off the engine becsue things are bad but she kept driving it.. Her excuse was that she thought that it was only a suggestion and that it would flash or start buzzing it thing were really bad... The owner of this car must have been worse as warping an engine that short is very hard...

The car 120k mi on the clock and i saked her if she has ever repalced the timing belt - she asked: what is a timing belt. After beeing towed to a garage, a techican confirmed my suspicion. She asked what to do and i told her that she can only push the car over a cliff and say good buy.

Years ago! Back when I was going to college.. My mom drove what was my car back then.. For 16 miles with a blown radiator tank it threw out all the water I put some water in drove it another 5 miles to the shop Already expecting to have a blown head gasket or fucked up engine.. I don't know how! But it survived.. It was a SR20DET.. And on top of that I owned that car until it reached 180k miles gave it as a gift to a cousin he's still have it.. 245k miles he doesn't drive it that often. He have other cars.. and he likes two doors cars better this was a Nissan Primera P11 GT. I want it back but now I live in the US cannot import it for what I heard.

@@geogmz8277 if it's over 25 years old you can impor it as a classic, or if tbey sold the same model in the us under a different (or the same for that matter) name you can import as well.

When I see an overheating engine and there's bubbling in the coolant, the head gasket goes to the top of the list. I don't need a computer. I have never seen any bargains at auctions. Smarter guys than me have been all over that car and they know EXACTLY what's wrong with it.

Time to do an LS swap. Optimistic thought; “If Rich can do a Tesla , then Samcrac can do a i8.”

SOLUTION!!! There is no need to change the engine, level the head and the engine block, then go to water jet or laser cutting shop and make the head gasket from copper, as tick as you need to compensate for machined off metal on head and block, and voila you are al good :) Regards from Bosnia,

It's not a huge engine either, so it should be easy to find a shop with a mill large enough to deck the block and head in a timely manner. It's not like a V8 or I6 of some sort where you're going to be waiting like 6 months to a year for a shop to finally get around to your engine.

or clean off the gasket surfaces, place the head in an oven and heat to 120 degrees and replace with new gasket while it is still hot.

Or get it levelled and then stick 2 gaskets in there. I'm not sure if this is possible though: but it is a metal gasket!

@@plebiansociety Something cost-effective wouldn't have the HP, and something with enough HP wouldn't have any fuel capacity. I've actually looked into it before, it isn't worth it.

You could try skimming the engine and use a cylinder head shim, that would be an interesting project.

The way he asked if that timming chain was messing with you, Sam he was truly willing to fight that chain for you haha. They seem like some fun dudes

I suggest getting the head and block machined anyway and fitting it with an oversized head gasket. Even if they don't sell one, a custom head gasket is cheaper than replacement of the BMW engine. A thicker gasket will eliminate the small valve to piston clearance and the timing chain and computer will be matched so there shouldn't be any electronic problems.

I bought a block tester for my 2001 Deville with the Northstar engine. It ran hot because off a plug coolant filter.

Oh good lordy! When you grabbed that can of head gasket fix I felt my stomach drop to the floor!!!

Get the head and top of the block skimmed - calculate the material removed, cnc a stainless steel spacer plate to the required thickness to restore deck and compression height. Using a head gasket above and below required spacer plate you can then reassemble as per factory. Problem solved and engine saved. If the machining is accurate you should have no further issues.

Seems like more trouble than it's worth. That car clearly hasn't had a good life. Who knows what else in the engine might be out of spec from the neglect.

@@hyphest If they were of the standard type you probably could - but as they use that blue compound within the gasket to seal the combustion chambers id be wary of how they would work stacked on top of each other. As suggested perhaps a thick copper gasket with a factory headset on top could work.

Oh, I expected Scotty Kilmer's signature comment "Endless money pit", but this is still valid.

I kind of question the guy who checked the head. If what he said about the timing getting off if you re-decked the head and block, then that motor wouldn't last another 30,000 miles once the timing chain stretched. Kind of the whole purpose of a chain tensioner to keep the slack out and keep the cam within running range.

then its the other side of chain that is not pushed by tensioner that becomes too short for normal chain lenght so cams lobes are in wrong position. or ..

I suggest having the head resurfaced. The machinist cautioned that would bring the valve heads closer to the piston heads, and also throw off the valve timing. He's right... but at this point you have something to gain and little to lose. Reassemble the engine with TWO head gaskets to compensate for the lost height.
