Captain Morgan was someone who really existed. The rum brand is called after Henry Morgan, a 17th century privateer from Wales. He worked for the Royal Navy and raided ships and settlements in the Caribbean and Central America, and is most famous for destroying Panama City in the 1670s.

I thought the name was popular in Welsh because of Morgan le Fay from the Arthurian Legend. Correct me if I am wrong.

It's simply a Welsh/Celtic/Gaelic name - look up the etymology. It'll likely be far older than the Arthurian Legend.

I'd expect the celebrity Morgan Fairchild (www.imdb.com/name/nm0000392/?ref_=nmbio_bio_nm) had a lot to do with the name being used more for girls. But her name was actually Patsy.

I always thought Morgan the name came from ‘morgen’ - the German word for ‘morning’. The actual etymology is even more interesting.

There's a popular Irish goddess called Morrigan. :-) Not the same origin as Morgan though, just similar sounding. Morrigan either means "Great Queen" or "Phantom Queen". :-)

@@Josep_Hernandez_Lujan Yeah, the character on Dragon Age was based on the Irish goddess of the same name. The goddess is nothing like the character in the game, though. The goddess is associated with Ravens and Crows, along with the colours black and red. She is a warrior goddess (not a sex goddess like many people assume). The KZread channel by Lora O'Brien is really great for Morrigan lore. :-)

There's also Morgan Wallen, the country singer. This year he had many songs including "Chasin You" and "7 Summers"

The same is true of most surname derivative names. They start as boys' names, and slowly become unisex, and then in the US, become more common for girls while in the UK, it is still considered a boy name. Examples include Courtney, Ashley, Beverley and pretty much any name ending in -ley or -ney, as well as certain patronyms (ie Madison) and profession-based surnames like Carter or Taylor some of which are just starting to transition to unisex names

I know a pair of twins both named Morgan both are different genders its so confusing.

I’m a guy named Morgan and my female cousin is also named Morgan. We were both born the same month and year.

I know a male Morgan, a female Morgan, and someone with the surname Morgan, safe to say that Morgan is a name that's popular in my life. And one of my favourite car brands is also Morgan.

In my college sorority, there were no less than three Morgan's at any given time. We also had eight total Emma's within three years -- a name that also took over in the mid 90s.

I was literally drinking Captain Morgan while watching this and I almost had an existential crisis

If Morgan as a surname counts, then how could you forget John Pierpont Morgan, the banker who also owned a bunch of shipping companies (among which, the White Star Line) whose brief illness saved him from sailing (and possibly dying) on the Titanic, and Linda Morgan the most famous survivor of the sinking of the Andrea Doria.

I would like to mention the woman who starred as the vampire in "My Babysitter's a Vampire", Vanessa Morgan.

In the US the most famous Morgan was John Pierpoint (JP) Morgan, the 19th-20th century bank founder whose legacy is the JP Morgan Chase Bank. He was also the model for the banker character “Rich Uncle Pennybags” in the Monopoly game. Are there no JP Morgan Chase banks in the UK?

You left out the most important Morgan of all, Morgan Fairchild... I think she made this name popular for girls in the '90s. I like this as a boys' name better!

Good grief Patrick you forgot to mention the spectacular Morgan la Fey from Arthurian legend! She’s my favourite ever Morgan!

Clan Morghain is the oldest known in Scotland. Inhabited the far north west of Scotland. Settled along the coast down to Wales. There is a Morgan tartan (even though current tartans are mostly fiction).

I am a female Morgan born in the mid 90’s (97) and I have the name because it was my mom’s maiden name. Actually my brother (born in 95) was almost Morgan but my dad talked my mom out of it by promising their next kid would be Morgan, and here I am. Also, Morgen means morning in German. I had a friend in high school whose dad had a habit of greeting me with “Morgen, Morgan” (obviously only in the morning)

The first female Morgan I ever heard of was Morgan Fairchild. She was born Patsy Ann McClenny in 1950 but took Morgan Fairchild as her stage name in the early 70s (she got it from the name of a 1966 movie, "Morgan - A Suitable Case for Treatment.". She was most famous as a TV actress in the 80s and 90s. So it's possible that a lot of girls born during that time were named for her. (By the way, she's still acting.)

Morgan gained popularity in the US during the 1980s because of actress Morgan Fairchild. She was famous for pushing Joan Collins into a swimming pool and also for getting pushed into a pool by Joan Collins.

I forgot another Morgan associated with the Titanic - Morgan Robertson who wrote the novel "Futility, or Wreck of the Titan" in 1898, 14 years before the sinking of the Titanic, where the Titan, the biggest ship in the world, with characteristics very similar to those the Titanic would later have, sinks in April in the middle of the North Atlantic after colliding with an iceberg, most people on board dying due to the ship carrying too few lifeboats. An eerie coincidence.

Seems like a similar situation to the Hispanic name "Rosario" - from what I have heard it's a girl's name in Latin America and in Spain it's traditionally been a male name.

I have a cousin born 1992 called Morgan. Not sure what the inspiration behind it was. Also, there was the mid-late 90's Australian TV show, Bananas in Pyjamas, which had a female character called Morgan. But I don't think it quite gained the same popularity here.

My name is Morgan because my parents were fans of the TV show Dallas (“Who shot JR?”) and Morgan Fairchild had a major role on the show. They liked the name.

In Swedish (at least from what I know) Morgan is just a guy's name and one famous Morgan is actor and comeian Morgan Alling, who started his career in the early 90's being in children's summer program Tippen (which could be translated into "The Dump" as it had an educational tone around trash and recycling and about the environment, a series I followed as a kid in 93 and 94), in the last decade he has become known as Rudolf Andersson in the Sune movies (also known as Tosh in english speaking countries, at least in the cartoon series The World of Tosh, where Rudolf is known as Ralph) and is the swedish dub voice for Baymax in Big Hero 6. It's just hard to think Morgan as a female name because of this even if Morgan le Fey, King Arthur's half-sister and nemesis from The Legend of King Arthur.

Excellent choice of a name to explore! Another famous Morgan which is why Americans may use the name more for girls is Morgan Fairchild. However my sister named her son Morgan, which I initially thought was strange as I was used to it as a girl's name, But then again Morgan Freeman came to mind and it's now seems to be a pretty unisex name.

Morgan is the Male version, Morgen is the female version in Wales. It does mean "Sea Born" Môr = Sea. Gan/Gen from geni/gennaf = born. Cant can also mean 100 in Welsh, so could mean 100 seas. The song one sounds like a false etymology as cân in Welsh means song (mutated to gan in this example) although in Welsh sentence structure, it would Ganmor for Sea Song. Pretty rare to find a girl with the name Morgan in Wales. Especially in the Welsh speaking areas.

My guess why Morgan got so popular as a girl’s name is s the 90s is due to the “warring Morgans” in the 70s and 80s: cool blonde Morgan Fairchild (as in the thumbnail) and cool brunette Morgan Brittany. I don’t know if they were actually warring, but it seemed like every time one turned on a nighttime soap, a game show or a Love Boat-styled guest star driven program in the US, one (or sometimes maybe both) were on it. Plus Fairchild became the key of a joke on a running Saturday Night Live sketch and was in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Brittany to a lesser extent was on Dallas, though not as iconic. Anyway. I’m thinking people my age (who were kids in the 70s or 80s) thought fondly it was a pretty nice name when they came around to having kids.

It's only more popular as a girls' name in the US. It's not that popular in the UK outside of Wales where it is *definitely* a boys' name - you'll struggle to find a girl called Morgan in Wales.

It's kind of funny that you ask this, as in the game Prey, the protagonist is called Morgan. You can choose at the start whether they are male or female and Morgan was presumably chosen as a good unisex name.
