Who will want a Malaysia citizenship? A lot of Malaysians are eager to dump their citizenship. There’s no resentment from Singaporean to Malaysian but it’s the other way round. They are always comparing. Singaporeans really don’t care who is better. Both unique and different. they have a loser mentality. they should own their problem. Cancelling Joscelyn not solving anything. The ugly truth hurts.

As a Malaysian, the reason why Malaysians were offended because she couldn't make the joke hit among the crowd. The way she do it makes it look insulting to Malaysians.

But actually to me, I'm ok if she mocking out the Malaysia because that normal for some comedian either from Malaysia or some Asian countries, but the worse thing was she making joke of the UNSOLVED AIRPLANE TRAGEDY which is still cried with to many victims families

Woah watching this made me feel like a narrow-minded person. I think it’s terrible to make jokes about devastating events i.e 911, pearl habour, nanjing massacre and mh370. They’re on different level of tragedy but still, I would never find it acceptable, let alone funny. Locate her is a bit too extreme but really hope she can apologise

It is neither nice to make stinging jokes about any country. You can make jokes but a good comedian will try to make jokes about another country based on some idiosyncrasies of the people but not belittling a country like this comedian. Those stinging jokes become sick jokes.

The joke could’ve been funny but she was pretty aggressive with her attacks on Malaysia. On top that, her smug face at the end of her delivery just wasn’t sitting right with me and was kinda weird 😬

As malaysian that appreciates stand up comedy, I think the whole joke was unfunny and in poor taste and come across that she meant it more than a joke. That been said, I think the whole thing is blown out of proportion and the political movement has been milking it for brownie points. The comedian doesn't deserve anything more than a thumbs down and maybe being cancelled locally but i don't it would have mattered to her anyway.

To me, the problem isn't specifically the joke in question but more of the audacity that a Singaporean or former Singaporean would say even attempt it. The smugness of superiority is IMO what really set off many Malaysians knowing that the comedian is fully aware of the history between the two nations. If a random Canadian/American said the joke, I don't think there will be much blow back at all. However I do agree it's over the top now and the best way forward is to just drop the subject all together unless this comedian says something that further fuels the fire again. Added to the fact that the SGD is at its highest it has ever been compared to the RM.

This whole interpol thing is just a show. To help clam down the unrest. Our authorities probably don't give two shits about this. It's all about scoring brownie points.

People have a right to determine what they find offensive or not, just as much as they have the right to determine what is funny or not. Neither humor nor tolerance for offense are universal. Jocelyn's greatest sin was simply not being funny or clever with her material; just mean spirited. Daniel really offers a fantastic perspective early in the video with a very reasonable and admirable take.

When you go for a stand up show, barriers and limits are usually lowered if not completely ignored. Telling people "some jokes can't be cracked even if it's at a stand up show" is the same as telling an F1 racer "you can only drive at this speed the entire race". I think the problem that people have with her is 1. She's Singaporean 2. Her delivery which sounded so hateful

I am a Singaporean and I feel that by the way how she made fun of the country and the Malaysian airline has really gone overboard. To say that those who felt offended has definitely overreacted is far too irresponsible. Just like if I say, with a sneering look that Chia is a silly, ugly old auntie who cant really make jokes and thinking that her joke is funny is such an embarrassment to herself and family. How will she feel? By saying that she doesn't feel offended is most probably a lie unless she doesn't understand English. I have been to several parts of Malaysia and I really feel they are a bunch of nice people, far better than most Singaporeans that I have met who think too highly of themselves and very spoilt and selfish. I don't think Malaysians deserve such unkind comments from Chia. Chia, pls reflect and stop making such irresponsible comments anymore.

It’s every individual’s prerogative to feel offended at the joke. So it’s totally fine if Malaysians get offended. By all means go boycott her show or ban her from your country. But to resort to interpol to locate her? That’s definitely an overreaction. The shame has definitely shifted from Jocelin to the Malaysian police. And your comment about Singaporeans being spoilt and selfish, that’s your opinion and you have your prerogative to share your feelings. Should Singaporeans get offended and cancel you? Chia is a comedian speaking in a comedy club in US. She has toured the country and repeated the joke multiple times and the audience found it funny. Clearly the target audience are not the Malaysians.

I think its the context that is being shared. MH370 victims are still MIA and their families are still broken hearted over this. As a Malaysian, ofc we overreacted. Joke not funny, but we overreacted la.

Why would you joke about a tragedy that nobody has closure over it, nobody knows what happen, who to blame, no bodies to bury, victim's family still mourning. And on top of that, she threw an entire nation under the bus as if we could have prevented it. jokes about tragedy usually requires prepping the audience but with her sneering, snickering at Malaysia like some sore ex, why do anyone expect people to not be mad at it ? jokes on tragedy are also use to punch up not punch down, the entire Malaysia part that she made just feels off

1. Jocelyn's joke doesn't represent the view of all Singaporeans, but neither does the minister's apology. 2. You can say her joke wasn't funny, but that's where it ends, freedom of comedic expression. 3. Engaging Interpol to go after a comedian who performed a joke, at a comedy show, in the US, is ridiculous.

Clearly you haven’t watched top comedians like Jimmy Carr and Ricky Gervais. And maybe you are not suited for dark humor. Just to be clear, yes it may be insensitive and offensive to spread dark humor but there is a group of audience who likes dark humor. Those who attends her show, clearly appreciates dark humor and hence she is pandering to their likings. Those who are offended are not her target audience.

No. Bcs she posted it online *herself* so tht all people in the world *including* those who u claim as *"dont suit with dark humor"* to see it. And now tht's not abt the target audience. Tht's only her, doing tht for her own favor, to become effortlessly famous comedian. Period.

My opinion is 1. Her delivery was bad. She could have potentially stayed on the same topic, but with better delivery 2. It was okay that people stand up against her at first, but it's gone waaaaay overboard.

The offensive part was she is a bit too ignorant and use of the f**** twice including to a Malaysian there. I think she was insulting with hate rather than joking.

As a Malaysian i was not offended on any jokes make towards us because we will do the same. Just that her joke just doesn't land, she's trying too hard, not really a good comedian.

What I like about this podcast is that they use a very entry level mic, I believe is the AT2040? But their sound guy is probably very good at eq-ing the mic to make it more "broadcast" kind of sound. I'm pretty partial to the RE20, but this sounds good as well.

Joke Michelle Yeoh is not Malaysian she is from Hong Kong. Her Career and life was in Hong Kong when she first started with no thanks to malaysia. Later in life her career was in America and Hollywood. She is part Hong Kong and American more than she is a Malaysian.

FYI its not a joke at all. It more look like hatred harming. You all still young to see the consequences. Proverbs: If Fire never reach your own skin, your won't feel pain. On her level or many others who never experience hard life, yet to reach a level on empathy (stand in other shoe to feel) and definately w'ont have sympathy. Malaysian Government is not overaeact. It is a protection of the nation. Think. You never stop a small fire, a heat surrounding will get fire big.

What separates a good comedian and bad ones, are the expressions. If she would’ve done "fak you" in a sarcastic manner, the whole drama would’ve had happened. The jokes she made were not that offensive, the way she presented it was. I would’ve seen Un Roger done it in a different way and it won’t feel offensive. Guess not everyone has the talent, so yeah she wasn’t funny at all.

I am no Malaysian but I honestly think the MH370”joke” is no acceptable. There were so many lives on the plane! Till now the deceased’s family still has no closure 😢

They need and seek too much attention and want people to admire them. People with this disorder may lack the ability to understand or care about the feelings of others.

jimmy carr is very technical, which is what makes his performances so interesting to watch. punching down is not the issue, it's whether you can tell that the comedian 1. doesn't actually mean what they say, 2. actually does feel empathy.

It's beyond countries and politics. There are people out there who has MH370 still fresh on their minds as they lost their family and friends then. To make a joke about it then double down is to spit on the people that the victims left behind.

After hearing the part about joking about 9-11, I think I understand why the MH370 joke was not taken well: There was no clear offending party to direct the joke at. Afaik, till today, no one truly knows what happened to MH370 (i.e. It's an unexplained accident with way too many moving parts), so there's no entity to sort of "put the blame on" or to explain what had happened, while on the other hand, in the 9-11 incident, the Taliban were clearly the perpetrators of that attack, so there was a clear target for the joke. This just makes it such that when you tell the MH370 joke, no matter how you set it up, it's gonna either sound like you're making fun of the lives lost, or making fun of Malaysia when there probably was nothing anyone in Malaysia could have done to prevent it. TL;DR Jocelyn just picked a bad topic for a joke.

I think any tragedy can be turned into comedy but it's the talent of the comedian to weave the narrative points of the tragedy. Good comedians will deliver a punchline that's personal perspective or a new perspective on the absurdity of the situation. On the top of my head, if the MH370 joke pivoted into highlighting how in this modern age, a commercial plane can go missing and how there should be better standards in aviation travel then it wouldn't be bad or even if she just attacked the corrupt incompetent government but instead she threw a whole nation under the bus.

My favourite comedian is Gabriel Iglesias and he has made jokes about different races and countries at times, but he delivers it so well that it doesnt offend anyone

Stand up commedian Jocelyn Chia recent comedy in US provoked heated backlash from Malaysia and Singapore. Jocelyn touched on history of separation of Singapore from Malaysia, she used vulgar words on Malaysia, she made fun, looked down and booed Developing Nations. She was wrong to say Malaysia Airlines cannot fly. She was wrong to say Malaysia has no internet. Worst was her reference to Malaysia Airlines MH370 that went missing on March 8, 2014 along with 239 passenger and crew which Jocelyn says is funny. Needless to say, her jokes was hurtful and offensive. Rubbing salt to wounds are many commedians coming out to support Jocelyn including our Malaysian ambassador to US Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz advising Malaysians not to be thin skinned, childish and get upset when someone insult or criticize us. Can vulgarity, insults, lies, people or country misfortune, disguised as jokes be acceptable? Unfortunately in comedy world, commedians can say anything for laughs and all are expected to laugh and not take it seriously. Isn't this similar to bullying? This must change. People must know that words hurt and have huge and wide ramifications and to think twice before they speak.

I found her delivery and tone of her segment too crude, as if she's sounding off her resentment than delivering a dark humor. If its meant to be funny as a joke, its totally lost on me.

If you check one of her video, she called her audience pedophile just bcs the girl who were 19 married her 18 yo husband .. her personality is just..

all i felt as a malaysian watching the bit was that the only people who might understand the nuances would have to be malaysian or singaporean. and probably the only place she could have made this joke successful was in malaysia itself with some execution tweaks. wasnt offended at all but then again, im not related to any of the MH370 victims. as far as the politicians and interpol goes, all that is just too much..

It may be some kind of overreact ; however her jokes are aggressive and this turn to be offensive. To say general urbanites Malaysian are not offensive; is not entirely true.

First of all, you have to ask yourself, if MH370 happened to another country, would Malaysians care? The answer is not one will because they have nothing invested in MH370. Now I understand the sensitivities of the occurrence, but how long do people have to tiptoe around you before you go on with your life? Also, what is the Malaysian Government going to do in asking Interpol to find her? Then what, extradition? Possible jail time? On what charge? As you haven't already noticed, it's a free world out there, much freer than Malaysia in some instances. I doubt that Interpol would march to the tune of the Malaysian government. As far as Michelle Yeoh is concerned, I have known her my whole life and I was the happiest person in the world when I saw she had won an Oscar, the first and only Malaysian to do so. However, what does it mean in the grand scheme of things? Not a thing. This all started when a widow in the video tells the comedian that she cannot say anything about MH370 because of obvious reasons ( I am assuming she watched it online for some reason). Now I feel for her and her son, but who the hell are you to demand such things? I have had people die in my life too but nobody gives 2 hoots about that, and she would probably affirm that feeling if asked. I say to hell with that lady. Yes, she lost a husband and she has to pick up the pieces with her son and she doesn't know how and I am very sympathetic to what's happened to her. However, that doesn't mean she has the entitlement to tell people what to do, say or act when it comes to MH370. Granted, I would never crack a joke like that and in the case of the joke that started it all, it wasn't really funny and incredibly insensitive. However, coming back to the original questions, did any of this have to happen at all? Well, no. The thing is an insensitive person who caught the attention of a sensitive person who then made a public complaint, and that is as far as it went. Now as far as the Malaysian government making it into a political or diplomatic issue is another kettle of fish, which I doubt they would do. At the end of the day, Jocelyn has been pretty open about her stand-up routine and hasn't tried to hide anything and from my point of view, she uses the bit to change rhythm when her jokes aren't working. However, I am sure that there are people out there looking for Jocelyn's blood (read supporters of the lady or people who have lost a loved one in MH370). What people do from here is up to them and I hope for peace and understanding.

If the country was nearby, I am sure there would be a level of care. Thai floods in 2022 or thai kids trapped in the cave, the tsunami that heavily effected Indonesia etc. Most of us in the Asean region have a degree of relations with a neighboring country. Like we wouldn't make fun of Indonesia's aircraft crashes, tsunami, Thailand's major flood in 2022 or whatever else. Different. SIA 006 crashed, casualties and survivors, all found. Family members can at least have closure.

I am malaysian, I feel when she shout to our citizen rudely it makes me angry as I know a lot of malaysian will back their bros out even it is was a joke. fyi: i think there was funny parts like undevelope country and no phones and such. I get it, its kinda funny. Just if above thing did't happen malaysian would let slide for sure. Malaysian accept apology very easily but we did't hear any of those maybe the police just searching for her because wants to clarified that she was not giving a hate speech eventhought within a joke. Implication might happen is people will start follow her ways of cursing malaysian just for the fun of it. Malaysian really care about manners. Just a thing or two from me a malay malaysian people.

As a Malaysian, When watching the full skit, the jokes weren’t exactly offensive, its just her delivery was very bad and like the podcast mentioned how she tried to desperately clawback and justify that it was funny was the part that was stupid to me. If it was a joke about people’s death and it wasn’t well received then just take blow and apologise, like you may have gone alittle too far. The thing with using MH370 as a joke is pretty dangerous because until now, nobody has any clue or solid evidence to say what happened to it. There’s strong suggestion but no concrete evidence. Families involved in this incident have ZERO closure and had there been an audience member who had a close one on that plane, she must be ready to apologise, empathise and extend her condolences. Time + Tragedy = Comedy True to a certain extent but the death of loved ones, no matter how much time passes, must be respected. Her lack of empathy following all the backlash is what most Malaysians would be angry about.

IMO it's not exactly about the joke. It's about how a Singaporean/ ex Singaporean, our neighbor can choose to joke on a regional tragedy. If a Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian - i expect the backlash to be about the same. We subconsciously assume most ASEAN countries share the same values and are sympathetic towards each other's tragedies. Like if the shoe was on the other foot and Singapore had a major aircraft crash and a Malaysian comedian used the tragedy for a joke, I'd fully condemn him/her for it and expect the same level of backlash from both nations.

I am with the guy (in the podcast team) that the joke was not funny. I also feel that there is no need to use vulgarities to boost jokes. That said, joking about a tragedy however you put it, is not nice. We have to be sensitive to the feelings of those who experienced it, be it immediate family members or those related. However long it has passed, the pain still exist for those who lost their loved ones.

I believe any jokes on disasters will undoubtedly incur ire from certain groups of people, and Malaysians have every right to be angry about it. Imagine if another comedian made a joke about 9/11, would the results be the same and would it be petty or that they cant take a joke if the US seek help from Interpol (not that they need to)?

I believe they're only offended because she was initially thought to be Singaporean. It's as if some loud Malaysians have this cohesive inferiority complex and they always rile the rest up to hate on Singaporeans, whether is it our food, our strict laws or housing prices. If a white comedian cracked the same jokes they prolly won't be as bothered.

I dont really think Malaysia always fight with singaporean in social media. Malaysia and indonesia, on the other hands, bicker a lot. So to say tht malaysian hate her just bcs she is from singapore, is just a self-centred claim to be made. Try to understand tht smtg just dont rlly mean to be joke abt. Smtg like mh370 tragedy is not a good topic for comedy show. Unlike 911 tragedy which has its own offender, mh370 is a tragedy with no actual conclusion and thus no specific offender tht comedian can make a joke on. Wrong topic plus poor build up just rlly dont make her "joke" lands after all.

The biggest issue was how obvious it was full of hatred. She said it as if she's happy about the disaster.

Insightful talk, anyhow action and consequences are bear by the doer. People can give their thoughts about it as bystander whatever respond by the recipient (party involved) of the issue whether its ridiculous or not is not decided by the onlookers. For example one of the victims family lodge a police report, it has to be process abide by the law. We always catch things half way instead of thorough investigation in a open talk since we don't have access to its detail. That's media discussion alright, so its fine.

I okeh when she said malaysia left sg, we are doing bad and still develop country bc tht right what. But when it come to tragedy of someone i just cant take it as a joke not just MH370 any tragedy or even wars and stuff

She is lucky enough to give up her nationality and change to americans orelse she will bring a shame to other singaporeans. I think even most singaporean wont justify her doing. She suit for americans title bcs americans allows bullying and vulgor behaviour bcs they have this "America is a free country" slogan which allows them to do what all they wanted to do including free speech like this which most likely seems like a public bullying on certain ppl.

Malaysia has not done enough To solve the mystery and are guilt sensitive about it.. Someone in the government knows something but won't share it with families of the victims. Attacking a comedian is really consciousness of guilt on the part of the government/airlines. My personal guess, the Airlines had pre knowledge this pilot could go rogue/ dangerous. 😢

Definitely. If social media is a true depiction of cross-straits sentiments, there is obvious underlying resentment from certain segments of the Malaysian population who are just taking the opportunity to insult Singapore and its people time and time again - unjustifiably in this case since Jocelyn Chia can only speak for herself as an American and does not represent Singapore. That's probably the reason why the Singapore government apologized even though Jocelyn Chia is no longer a Singaporean.

I am a Malaysian and she isn't funny at all.
