    Hello! Just an update from this review - despite canceling (and receiving an email confirming my cancellation), I was charged once the trial period was over. I contacted lingopie and they did refund my account within two days, without any acknowledgement that I had already canceled and shouldn’t have been charged 🙂 I know this is a complaint that exists elsewhere online, so I had used a credit card where I could dispute the charges if necessary (which it wasn’t!), but I just wanted to provide this info as part of my review because I know that is not an option for everyone. Thanks!

    So grateful you made this video, this gave me everything I needed to know to basically decide LingoPie is probably not for me either haha I am also extremely picky with the content I watch because my attention span is absolutely terrible. Even with the plethora of content available on Netflix in Spanish and French I still find myself scrolling for ages trying to find something that fits my exact interest and moods, so I feel like the shows on LingoPie wouldn't serve me too well. Plus no matter how hard I try, I have NEVER been able to get into flashcards haha thanks for sharing your opinions! I really liked the format of this video, it was super helpful.

    Thank you so much for taking the plunge to review this! I was always confused by all of the ads because it seemed too good to be true. I got the impression that they were making hundreds of hours of original content in various languages, which didn't seem possible. Clearly my understanding was off. I don't currently do as much immersion as I would like and thought this might give me an excuse, but I think I just need to sit down and watch all of the shows on my Netflix queue. Great and honest review. Thanks. I'm still kind of undecided since there is a 70% off on lifetime subscription and even if currently the languages I'm interested in (korean and italian) have pretty scarce content on it maybe they will expand them in the future? Who knows. But then again netflix and other streaming giants have already so much content. Tough decision...

    Well I got the trial last night and watched a cheesy children's Korean sitcom about some detective kids. It's so cheesy but somehow felt nostalgic to me. I'm not sure why. I watched it on my iPad and I loved that. The interface is quite smooth and there's an option to auto pause for every subtitle which I really need. This was so much better than my experience with Migaku watching Netflix although I liked the k-drama on Netflix more. Migaku tries to make the flash card creation process smooth but it's really not smooth. And even if you don't care about flash cards and just want to slow the video down to read the subs and look stuff up etc Migaku is a bit of a pain. But this app it feels really nice (at least to me). I probably wouldn't have tried Lingopie if not for your review. And you didn't even recommend it per se.

    @@joreneelanguages Yes, I also forgot to mention auto-pause. Super useful to have auto-pause when you're watching harder content and really want to focus on learning vocabulary. There is also the "c" key which toggles the secondary subtitles on and off, another super useful feature.

I want to learn German, so maybe it is worthy.

    Great review! Yes -- it's all about the subtitles, which are excellent in Lingo Pie -- and I also agree content (especially the amount of) could be better. Still, the dual language subtitles alone make it totally worth it (and they have a very cool feature where you can watch the subtitles in the target language and then by pressing the "c" key you can toggle the second language sub-titles quickly on and off and on again.) I would rate Lingo Pie an 8 out of 10 on subtitles alone, and if they had more content I would give them a 9 or 10. Like you said content is the main thing they could improve. I got a 1-year subscription and I am glad I did -- but still will not renew after a year (again the content issue). Will totally get my money's worth -- and after a year I should easily be able to watch videos without any subtitles. What I recommend is getting it for like 6 months or a year (like I did) if you are only going to learn a single language -- don't recommend the lifetime subscription (due to the content issue).

    @@joreneelanguages btw: I should have added that they are strong in content in some languages like English and Spanish, however I'm learning Portuguese -- so yeah -- unfortunately not a ton of Portuguese content. I did cancel my subscription after a year -- totally happy with it -- and feel like I got my money's worth for a year -- but no more need for Lingo Pie -- I'm at the level where I can watch native Portuguese content on KZread with subtitles -- and even some films with subtitles -- so no more need for Lingo Pie long term. Thanks again for your review. Overall, I would recommend Lingo Pie.

    excellent review, you echoed my opinion. My time is important to me and I am not find the content very appealing except for the Netflix shows which I don't have a supscription for so it would be better for me to just join Netflix. I still have a few days of my trial left and will search for more exciting content but since I was hoping to take the life time membership I really don't think it will keep me entertained during my learning. It's a good resource though.

    @@joreneelanguages Lots of Spanish content -- Portuguese which is the language I am learning -- yeah Portuguese content was weak. Also, with Portuguese they had both European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese (which in some ways is a good thing), but usually you only want to focus on one or the other, so in a weird sense -- only half the content was usable, if you catch my drift. Again, for Portuguese I'd recommend 6 months or a year (the dual subtitles, auto-pause, and other tools are worth it) and then graduate to something else.

    You're correct about the non accuracy of the subtitles. There are several errors in your selected example at 3:45: "Tout le monde t'attend" means "Everyone's waiting for you" "On est au Westin, là" Means"we're at the Westin now" And there's no mention of any journalist in the French sub ... Weird this

  • @joreneelanguages

    @joreneelanguages

    Жыл бұрын

    that example is of Netflix with the Language Reactor extension turned on, and those subtitles do not always line up 1:1 timing-wise (so likely the French subtitle would have changed to the sentence about the journalist while the longer English subtitle would have stayed on the screen). However that's a free service so I don't expect the same quality. Lingopie had less obvious errors but occasional minor errors.

    Pimsleur is really good for learning how to say phrases! it's super repetitive, which is effective for memorizing but can get a little boring, but it teaches pronunciation really well. If you have access to a library a lot of libraries have the popular languages. The problem with the paid subscription is that I think you have to pay for languages individually (but i could be wrong). I haven't used Babbel but I have heard it is good for travel.
